REFLECTION

I found on the pages of 2013 reflections of Just Me homily’s blog the following reflection on this week’s readings which I am sharing with you.

What are values that would help us survive in this world? St. Paul in our second reading today even said: “Seek and think of what is above, not of what is on earth,” (vs 1-2). My dear friends, most of us are seeking and thinking not of what is above but, most of the time, of what is on earth. Supposedly, we must seek the values of the Kingdom of God. These can help us survive in this world.

First, be thoughtful. We know that a thoughtful person is a contagious one. By being thoughtful in your everyday actions, you do much to encourage people to follow your example, especially today when we are surrounded with lies. Someone said: “Liars go to hell!”

Second, have good manners. Persons who have good manners are those who do not offend others, do not easily get angry, do not return evil for evil, do not monopolize conversation, and do not interrupt when someone else is talking. In other words, they are kind, friendly, respectful, courteous, agreeable, patient, civil and generous.

And above all, be charitable. St. Paul exhorts us to love one another in peace as though we formed one family, bearing with one another’s defects. For St. Paul, charity is patient, kind, does not envy, is not pretentious, not puffed up, not ambitious, not self-seeking, not provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice over wickedness, etc. (1Cor 13:4-7).

I said just a while ago that most of the time, we seek and think of what is on earth like the following:

Immorality - We know that adultery is immoral, yet how many husbands and wives are having illicit relationships with other women or men? We know that lying is wrong, but how many of us are doing this just to hide that what we are doing is wrong. I remember somebody who had said that actually there are twelve commandments and not just ten. According to him, the 11th commandment is: Don’t get caught; and the 12th is: If you are caught, don’t tell the truth.

Impurity - Our minds are dirty with maliciousness, envy, and even sexual thoughts.

Passion - What kind of passion? Passion for money and wealth. Just like in our gospel today, many of us place a high value on material goods. We think that God blesses us because of the material things we possess. We do not realize that some of these material things could be acquired through corruption and stealing which has a thousand forms. But let us remember that money and wealth are not everything. There are things that money cannot buy: true happiness and Kingdom of God which is our final destiny for this life. In the Letter to the Hebrews, it says: “Stay away from the love of money; be satisfied with what you have for God has said: ‘I will never fail you nor forsake you,’ ” (Heb 13:5). Money is like a vice, just like drugs - we are addicted to it. There are people who have so much money in bank, but they still long to become richer to the extent that they neglect their loved ones and refuse to give them any of their money. They do not know that in a split second, all these things could be gone. Money which is given to us by God is a test to measure how charitable and merciful we are. Try to reflect on this: Money can buy a bed but not sleep. Money can buy books but not brains. Money can buy food but not an appetite. Money can buy a house but not a home. Money can buy medicine but not health. Money can buy companions but not real friends. Money can buy marriage but not love. Money can buy anything but not heaven.

Evil desire - How many of us want to take revenge? Just remember this: a person who pursues revenge should dig two graves; one for him and the other for his enemy.

Greed - All greedy people have one thing in common - they are pre-occupied with themselves and their own satisfaction without minding anyone else. Notice how the rich fool of the parable employs the first person singular as he schemes what to do with his money and wealth: “What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest? This is what I shall do. I shall tear down my barns and build large ones. There I shall store all my grain… and I shall say to myself…” It is good to have money and wealth because these can serve and help us also to survive. But if possessed by it, it is like being possessed by a devil, a worst kind of evil. It, therefore, is good not to yearn for it.

So seek the things that are above and not the things on earth.

Fr. Aloy

This Season’s Stewardship

of Time, Talent & Treasure Salute:

We want to thank Marilou Salvador, Cindy & Greg Mendoza for helping the St. Hilary Parish Team for the “Show & Tell” Renew My Church session on July 25th. Thank you also to Norma Librodo for providing the refreshments.

HELP US! You may sponsor our “Bread & Wine” on Sundays by making a

$50 donation to honor your loved ones.

As part of the Renew My Church, the Archdiocese of Chicago provided a

benchmark that churches must strive to attain in order to be sustainable for the

next 10 years. Attendance must be over 800 people and revenue must be over

$750,000 without considering any rental income. We are on track with

attendance but not with revenue. If you increase your giving by $3-$5 each

Sunday, or our attendance increase to around 1,000 people, we may be able to

reach the $750,000 revenue benchmark.

We encourage our parishioners to use our online giving portals either by ACH

or Give Central (http://www.givecentral.org/login). Interested? Please give

us a call at the Parish Office / Rectory (773) 561-3474.

Living Discipleship

through Spirit, Gifts & Service 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for. Hebrews 11:1-2

FAITH IN ACTION

Faith is trusting our God even though we do not

comprehend what is happening to us and our

circumstances. It is the assurance that His plan for

us will is always be for the best. This is the faith

we need at this season of Renew My Church. We

keep doing the best for the parish with the

knowledge that God has our back. Let us be

grounded in prayer.

The St. Hilary Domestic Violence Awareness Group attended a forum on July 23, 2019 at the Sulzer Regional Library on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. The purpose of the meeting was to strengthen the community’s stand against domestic violence. A Panel Discussion followed the three speakers who ably led the conversation with their excellent input. The event was organized by the St. Benedict and Queen of Angels domestic Violence Ministries.

On July 21st, we had 31 blood donors plus 10 additional blood donor volunteers who were unable to donate because the mobile van was not large enough to accommodate them and the Vitalant staff numbers were limited. Thank you to all who gave & all who offered to give the gift of life!

La Pieta Prayer Group sponsored a Healing Service at St. Hilary on Thursday, July 18th.
