Can’t say this any better than the Words of the wise, Rotary international President Ian Riseley "Each of us came to Rotary for our own reasons. But all of us have stayed in Rotary because Rotary adds something to our own lives. It gives us much more than just good friends, which, after all, can be found in many ways. It gives those friendships a deeper meaning, and it gives us a stronger connection to our communities. It gives us an experience and an education that we can find nowhere else — as we explore each avenue of service, guided by the ethics and values of Rotary. We stay in Rotary, because Rotary makes a difference in our lives — and because we know that through Rotary, each of us is making a difference in the world. And that knowledge, that feeling, is what keeps us coming back, meeting after meeting, project after project, year after year." July, 2017

Honored to serve? Absolutely! Humbled to serve? Undeniable! Grateful for all of you who havetouched hearts and enhanced our District in so many ways and will continue to do so?Unequivocally!

Hello and welcome to the District 5300  year 2017-18. Hope you are buckled up and ready for theride into the future of Rotary and beyond.

For now I would like to wish all of you a Happy and Safe 4th of July and remember Freedom is notFREE.

Can’t say this any better than the Words of the wise, Rotary international President Ian Riseley

"Each of us came to Rotary for our own reasons. But all of us have stayed in Rotary because Rotaryadds something to our own lives. It gives us much more than just good friends, which, after all, canbe found in many ways. It gives those friendships a deeper meaning, and it gives us a strongerconnection to our communities. It gives us an experience and an education that we can findnowhere else — as we explore each avenue of service, guided by the ethics and values of Rotary.

Rotary Awards PDG Sylvia WhitlockRotary announces a new award being given to Rotarians who contibute to the success of Womenin Rotary.

The following is an article pulled from Rotary Voices

New award celebrates success of women in RotaryOn Tuesday, 13 June, we sat down in a cool auditorium in the Carter Center in Atlanta,Georgia, for the first annual Women in Rotary Event. The four of us sitting togetherwere all women, all members of my Rotary club, and all at our very first RotaryInternational Convention. We were unaware of the impact this event was about to haveon us. But then, the lights began to dim.

It has only been a short 30 years since the landmark decision to allow women to joinRotary. Being only 27 years of age myself, this reality seems a bit absurd. All of theseincredible, passionate and driven women I have met since joining Rotary have only hadthe space of my lifetime to catch up in leadership roles, in Rotary pride and projects?Really? And yet as lights shone down on our presenters, we felt that 30 years, whileshort, has been plenty of time for these women to shine.

The event was organized and hosted by district governors Julie Craig and SieglindeWarren. Among the presenters was Nicholas Krayacich, a distinguished Rotarian fromOntario and spouse of 2016-17 Rotary vice-president, Jennifer Jones. He spoke from theperspective of what it is like having two Rotarians in the family and how he andJennifer support each other.

Charlotte Ahlberg, the charter president of the E-club of 2410se in Sweden, has beenperfecting the art of balance in life between family, work, personal time and Rotary.She opened new doors for those of us in the audience with the concept of Rotary online.Director (and 2017-18 RI Vice President) Hendreen Dean Rohrs inspired us with storiesof bucking the system and finding her Rotary family. She told us how she founded anew club when she found out the one she initially approached didn’t feel like includinga woman.

Jennifer Scott of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney had us in fits of laughter with hertale of how she responded to a group of men unsure of what a woman’s role could be inRotary. Her response was hysterically funny and wickedly apropos while still beingsomehow kind and welcoming.

Last, but certainly not least, was Dr. Sylvia Whitlock. I won’t deny that before theconvention, I knew little about the leadership of Rotary. I probably could not have toldyou the Rotary International President’s name! However, Sylvia I had heard about, andknew her incredible story. Dr. Whitlock came from the history-making “Rotary Club ofDuarte,” and was the first woman in the world to become a Rotary club president. Wefelt like we were at a moment in history when the award named after her wasannounced, an award recognizing individuals who have contributed to the success ofwomen in Rotary. The first recipient of the award after Sylvia herself is Carolyn Jones,the first woman Trustee of Rotary, who hails from District 5010. I look forward toseeing this award grow in both distinction and prominence over the years.

After the program itself, I was lucky enough to bump into Dr. Whitlock during thedinner reception. She was warm, genuine and more than a bit of a firecracker, and she

posed with me for a photo that I will cherish.

In a giant convention filled with incredible moments, this one moment will alwaysstand out for me: sitting with Sylvia, and hearing her advice to this new Rotarian, onewho aims to be just as much of a firecracker.

Once a month the Rotary Club of Las Vegas Red Rock holds a service project meeting;during these special meetings, they work together on a crafty hands-on service project.This month the Red Rock Club decided to use a Japanese legend to bring hope to achild with cancer by folding 1,000 paper cranes.

The legend goes that by folding 1,000 paper cranes, the recipient’s greatest wish willcome true.

Members of the Red Rock Club and their Rotary Youth Exchange student KristanLundquist from Denmark, along with 2 members of the Las Vegas Club and 1 memberof Las Vegas West worked together to fold paper cranes. They learned a new skill and itallowed all members to socialize in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The meeting that isnormally only 1 hour long lasted 2.5 hours as the participants who were so involved withfolding and socializing, lost track of time.

The Red Rock Club was glad to have Miss Nevada 2017 and Miss Nevada Endeavor 2017who worked side by side with Rotaries as they watched the pile of cranes grow. The totalnumber of cranes which were folded that night was 400. There are 600 more to go. TheRed Rock Club welcomes all crane donations to help them reach their goal of 1,000. The cranes will be given to a child with cancer thanks to Candlelighters ChildhoodCancer Foundation. To help bring hope to a child one crane at a time.

 Sincerely,

 Rebecca Fritz

Rotoplast Peru Project

Four Rotarians from District 5300 recently traveled to Lima, Peru as part of a Rotaplastmission to help children and teen-agers with cleft lips/palates, facial deformities andburn scarring.

Mary Ann Avnet of the Rotary Club of Las Vegas, Robin I. Smith of the Downtown LasVegas Rotary Club, Greg Jones of the Pasadena Afterhours Club, and Jill Dolan of theRotary Club of Pomona joined medical professionals and other non-medical volunteersfrom throughout the world in giving of their services and time.

“This mission was a life-changing experience that I will continue to share with othersuntil I no longer can,” says Robin, who served as the ward coordinator.

Nearly 100 patients were evaluated and nine “walk-ins” were assessed later in the week.A total of 59 patients had surgery, many of whom required jaw realignment and bonegrafts, and 64 procedures were performed.

Mary Ann served as the mission’s recreation therapist, a role she had during a trip toBangladesh last year. Her first Rotaplast mission was to Guatemala in 2011. “I had sucha good experience the first time that I was looking forward to another opportunity,” shesays.

“I’ve done a lot of international projects and this is the only one that has immediateand significant effects on a person’s life,” says Greg. “When you see the look on theparents’ faces after their children’s surgeries and know that these babies will have anormal life, it’s just gripping.”

None of the work could have been accomplished without the assistance of the mission’sgenerous sponsors – Rotary District 5300 and the Charlotte Geyer Foundation. Muchthanks to District 5300 Rotaplast Chair Roger J. Schulte for his support and guidance.
