ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

(ALC)

Home Improvements Trends This calendar year has been a very active year for the Architectural Landscape Committee (ALC), with a total of 254 applications having

been processed through July. As the committee reviewed these applications, certain trends in the types of exterior improvements are clearly emerging:

Exterior structural modifications are by far the most frequently requested improvement. Landscape upgrades and changes are the second most frequently requested improvement. Painting changes account for the third most frequently requested improvement.

Summertime is not only a good time to be doing your exterior improvements, but is also a great time to be planning and submitting your improvements to be done in the fall. Careful planning and early application to the ALC are the best ways to prepare for your im-provement projects. The application process requires: • Completed and signed Application Form • Detail site map indicating the area of work to be done Helpful items to include or perform are: • A review Applicable ALC Standards against the work proposed • Drawings and manufacturers’ brochure information Photographs of the house and area of work are also helpful to the committee in reviewing the application. For detailed projects, homeowners are encouraged to attend the ALC meet-ing when their application is being reviewed to answer any questions or present additional information. ALC members are also available for contact any time to discuss your upcoming projects or assist you with completing your submittal. The ALC is looking forward to assisting you with your home project as a future investment in our community.

Please join us on Thursday mornings at 9:00am in the Grille, or small conference room (when available), for

an open forum and brief study of Christian topics. You are encouraged to bring your cup of coffee and study Bibles, or just drop in to listen. Paul John’s knowledge of the Bible is very insightful, and presented in such an interesting way, it makes for a wonderful and fun learning experience! This is completely non-denominational and we enjoy discussions of personal experiences and questions. For more information, call Charlene Hodges (579-8609).

An Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting is held weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the Catalina II Room. This is a one-hour "Open" meeting, held each week, for the past 4 years. An AA "Open" meeting means that Alcoholics, their Spouses, Rela-tives, Friends, Visitors and persons who want information about AA are all welcome.

Meets Every Monday, 4:15pm Catalina II Room

Al-Anon is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics, who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. The one pur-pose of Al-Anon is to help families of alcoholics.

Halloween with trick or treat candy will be here soon. Help bring a little sunshine and sweetness to your High-lands neighbors who need a lift. If you know of a High-lands resident that is having surgery, ill, suffering a loss in the family or simply needs a boost, simply send an email to Ann Freeman at [email protected] with the resident’s name and situation and a card will be sent from The Highlands HOA. Without your help someone may not receive that little boost that they really need.

The Highlands Neighbor to Neighbor lending program is available to assist all Highlands residents. It only takes an email to lend or borrow a piece of medical equipment or item for visiting grandchildren. Loaned equipment is available for a limit of 4 weeks. To borrow or loan equip-ment contact Judy Poffenberger at [email protected] or Ann Freeman at [email protected]. Please do not call us as we may be out of town but we can always receive and send email. This is a strictly neighbor to neighbor act of sharing. It is not a HHOA committee.

BOARD POLICY VOLUNTEER POSITIONS OPEN

Want to help draft the policies by which The Highlands is governed? Volunteers are needed to fill recent vacancies in the Board Policy and Administration Committee (BPA). This is a key oversight committee that, at the request of the board of directors, creates The Highlands' policies and gov-erning documents. The committee also periodically reviews existing policies for recommendations to assure that com-munity governance is efficient and effective. A full description of the BPA's mission statement, duties and responsibilities can be viewed on the HOA web site under Homeowners,HOA Documents,Committees,Board Policy and Administration. The BPA will be gearing up soon for fall activity after a brief summer recess, so now is an excellent time to get in-volved. Applications for volunteering for the BPA or other Highlands standing committees and administrative support teams are available at the clubhouse reception desk. Prospective volunteers are invited to attend the BPA's meet-ing on Oct. 30. Questions may be directed to Committee Chair Joan Rietz at (345-7708).

THANK YOU

A sincere thank you to our Highlands community for your support and love for our family during Don’s illness. He fought valiantly to beat multiple can-

cers but lost the battle on September 1. When we first toured the Highlands in 2002 (and bought a house a week later), it just felt like it was where we should be. That was 12 years ago and we still feel the same! Our friends and neighbors here are incredible and helped us through this difficult time. Sincerely, Mary Beth Ursem

'Santa's Workshop' Child selection set for November 16

Arrrangements are again underway for residents of The High-lands at Dove Mountain to lighten the holidays for 100 of the Tucson area's neediest children. Santa's Workshop is a project of Dove Mountain Rotary Club to provide a Christmas party and presents for children enrolled in Project Yes, a neighborhood tutoring program in South Tucson. Highlands residents are invited to "adopt" a child for whom they will buy a gift which the child has requested. Children's names will be selected from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Club-house. Gifts are to cost no more than $25 to $30. Last year, residents and employees of the Highlands joined to provide a pre-holiday party and gifts for the children at Project Yes, a facility operated by the Tucson Urban League. Partici-pants were so generous that hundreds of dollars in supplies for the tutoring center also were donated. Santa's Workshop is a project launched eight years ago by High-lands residents Dot and John Santy and their friends. The project has been embraced the past two years by Dove Mountain Rotary Club. Questions may be directed to Rotarian Carol Smelser at [email protected].
