6:00pm
Highlands Homes TBD
Over the past few millennia, the succulent pads and juicy sweet fruit of the prickly pear cactus have fed millions of humans and other animals, offering life-sustaining nutri-ents. Today top chefs in many parts of the world include the pads and fruit in dishes served in elegant restaurants. Come join us September 12 and learn how to prepare a delicious and nutritious meal from the plant growing in our own back yards. Our dinner will be prepared using the fruit as well as the pads (nopales) for each course from drinks, appetizers and salad to entree and dessert. We will harvest the fruit in August from our own plants growing in abundance around the community! Sign up by Friday, August 28 by responding to Evite or emailing MaryBeth Ursem,[email protected]. Planning meeting will be held Tuesday, September 1, 4:00pm.at the clubhouse. How the group works: Hosted in Highlands homes, recipes assigned—all are welcome—singles and couples. Only sign up when interested, themed dinners—all beverage and food costs shared equally. A great way to experience new cuisines and meet other neighbors!
The Highlander— August/September, 2015 Page 4
An Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting is held weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the Catalina II Room. This is a one-hour "Open" meeting, held each week, for the past 4 years. An AA "Open" meeting means that alcoholics, their spouses, relatives, friends, visitors and persons who want information about AA are all welcome.
The Highlands Neighbor to Neighbor lending program is availa-ble to assist all Highlands residents. It only takes an email to lend or borrow a piece of medical equipment or item for visiting grandchildren. Loaned equipment is available for a limit of 4 weeks. To borrow or loan equipment contact Judy Poffenberger at [email protected] or Ann Freeman at [email protected]. Please do not call us as we may be out of town but we can always receive and send email. This is a strictly neighbor to neighbor act of sharing. It is not a HHHOA committee.
HIGHLANDS TENNIS
ASSOCIATION
If you are a tennis player who wants to get the most enjoyment out of his or her game, then the Highlands Tennis Association is for you.
As a member, you can sign up to have one of our schedulers arrange a game of doubles for you with players of similar ability – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for men and Monday, Wednesday and Friday for women. In addition, as a member of the association you will pay a reduced price for dinner or brunch during the two annual social events, the Spring Fling and Fall Fling. You will also have 24/7 access to our top-flight ball machine. Membership, which costs $15 a year, is open to all owners and renters living at The Highlands at Dove Mountain. Payments are added to your HOA bill automatically once a year. For further information, contact HTA President Bob Meredith at (661-0042)

ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE
COMMITTEE (ALC)
ALC Fall Survey -2015
The Architectural and Landscape Commit-tee is interested in being proactive towards community improvements. All around us there are new communities and housing developments with exciting modern features that attract buyers. If The Highlands remains the same as its original concept, we will be the losers. Instead of waiting for homeowners to ap-proach the committee with requests, that often have to be denied because they don’t fit the written standards, we hope to explore possible enhancement ideas to refresh the overall look of our streetscapes. We need your help to respond to our survey this fall regarding possible changes to the Design Standards that will move us in a positive direction for keeping our ‘look’ fresh and up-to-date. A survey about Enhanced Design Features will take place this fall. You will be able to access the email version if you have registered your email to receive the Week Ahead invitation. There will also be hard copies. The committee will appreciate all the feedback you can provide about the ideas we will be putting forth.
• The purpose of this survey is to gather ideas for future consideration. Also during the survey period you will find some information and pictures on display on the bulletin boards at the clubhouse. These displays will show you the types of structures and finishes we are asking the community to consider for future enhancements.

Common Area Committee The next cycle for the Common Area Committee (CAC) starts in October with the application due date of October 29, 2015 for Holes 1, 2 and 3. The first meeting of the CAC will be November 5, 2015 at which time the first set of applica-tions will be reviewed for completeness. The schedule for the rest of the year is at the end of this article. The Common Area Committee meets the first Thursday of each month, from the October application deadline through the May CAC meeting. Applications are accepted for three golf holes per month on a rotating basis. Miscellaneous non-golf course applications can also be submitted. There will be a notice of the three holes coming up in future Week Ahead arti-cles starting in October. Applications for common area projects on the three holes for each month are due the Thursday before the monthly meet-ing. The CAC committee meeting occurs the first Thursday of the month at 1pm. The agenda for that meeting will be available by the next day in the Week Ahead and will contain the names and lot numbers and a brief description of the applications being presented at the meeting. At the meeting these applications will be reviewed for completeness.
Complete applications will then be posted online and placed in a binder available at the front desk and in the li-
brary. Inspections will be set up for the next week. Committee members and George Berg, the landscape supervisor and HOA certified arborist, meet on site to go over the application and reach a consensus about the project. At the CAC meeting, applications that have been reviewed will be voted on and if approved, permits will be issued by the next week. A year end summary of CAC projects for the October 2014 through May 2015 cycle is available on the Highlands at Dove Mountain website.
