The High Street Hanging BasketsWhat a Summer Show!

Summer may be over, but it’s worth mentioning the floral display on the High Street this year.

Many people commented that it’s never looked better. The hanging baskets are purchased from

the Parish Council by the High Street businesses and then the Parish Council staff, Dave and

Andy, are on the High Street early each morning watering and maintaining them. It’s all about taking

pride in the village and making it an attractive High Street for villagers and visitors.

Christmas lighting up eventIt’s coming up to the time of year when we wrap up and celebrate Christmas on the High Street. Following the success of the new date last year, the Parish Council will again hold the Edwinstowe Christmas lights event on the last Thursday in November.

The lighting up will take place on the 28th November at 4.30–7.00pm. We had a fantastic evening last year : a new layout, more stalls and the weather was perfect. Plans are in place to make this year another wonderful occasion, full of magic and fun. We look forward to seeing you there . . . .

Parish Council Take Over the Car Parks - Free Parking GuaranteedThe Parish Council have signed an agreement to take over the three car parks, East Lane, West Lane and the Village Hall car parks, from Newark and Sherwood District Council. The change will take place on 1st April 2014 and initially the agreement will last for 25 years.

Chair of the Parish Council, Councillor Celia Brooks said, “this is a good deal for Edwinstowe. We believe the Parish Council is best placed to look after the car parks on a daily basis and most importantly, we want to guarantee free parking. The District Council is facing huge budget cuts and we were concerned that at some time in the future, they might be tempted to bring in car parking charges as they have in most of their other car parks.”

The Parish Council now owns, or leases most of the amenities in the village: the Village Hall; the three car parks; the cemetery; the allotments; Edwinstowe Jubilee Park; Henton Road play area; the War Memorial; the public toilet; and produces this magazine, “Edwinstowe Village News”. It also carries out all the maintenance, litter picking and is responsible for the grass cutting and dog bins. In fact, once the car parks pass to the Parish Council, Newark and Sherwood District Council will mainly be responsible for the bin collections and Council houses.

Councillor Brooks said: “We think that this Parish Council can run all the local amenities much better than the District Council and offer good value for money. Parish Councillors live here and really care about the village and our staff are around the village every day, looking after Edwinstowe and keeping the village well maintained and litter free.”

St Mary’s CE Primary SchoolEarly Years Foundation StageThe start of the new term has been an extremely busy one for the foundation stage at St Mary’s! We have enjoyed making new friends, as well as building good relationships and igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning through fun, engaging play experiences.

At St Mary’s we work hard to support and guide children as they begin their learning journey through school. The initial focus is on the importance of social skills where children are encouraged to take time to listen and share with each other, alongside the development of good relationships -two vital ingredients to create the foundations of successful and happy pupils.

Early language and understanding of number is nurtured through planned purposeful play experiences and positive interactions that guide and respond to each child’s emerging needs.

The admissions process for part-time sessions takes place every November for admissions for the following year i.e. the admissions process taking place November 2013 will be for intakes in September 2014, Jan & April 2015. If your child was born between the 1st September 2010 and the 31st August 2011, you need to apply for a part-time place now!

Do you know when to claim benefits as a single person and when to claim as a couple?

Usually it is obvious and changes in circumstances should be reported promptly. If it is not obvious, you may need to look at the following pointers: Do you live in the same household? - that is, for the majority of the time. However two people may live independently within the same house, eg lodger and landlord. Do you have a sexual relationship? - you cannot be asked about this, but you may offer information What are your financial arrangements? – is one person supported by the other and in what way? Is your relationship stable? – what activities do you do together and what do you do for each other (eg shopping, laundry, cleaning and cooking)? Do you have children together? How do you appear in public? – do you appear to be a couple?

Don’t let predatory lenders get away with treating you unfairly.

If you’re struggling to repay a payday loan:

Don’t be tempted to borrow more - payday lenders aren’t allowed to pressurise you to take out another loan, or to ‘roll over’ your existing one

Stop the payment – your bank or card provider should stop it if you ask in time

Contact the lender – offer to pay a regular amount you can afford (a Citizens Advice bureau can help to work this out)

Make a complaint - if your lender doesn’t follow the rules:

BenefitsLiving together as a couple

Answering YES to one of the above will not necessarily mean that you are a “couple” – it depends on the other answers too.

There is no rule that says that if your partner stays with you for three nights or more a week, then you are automatically treated as a couple who are living together – but this may be the case when other factors are taken into account.

For more information on this and advice on any subject, contact:

North Notts Advice Line (0844) 856 3411 or (0300) 456 8369 from a mobileMonday to Thursday 10.00am – 2.00pm

Cohabiting decisions can be challenged, depending on the circumstances.

If you are convicted of a benefit fraud or accept a penalty or caution, you can lose certain benefits

for at least 13 weeks.

Payday Loans what can you do?

Your payday lender should accept a repayment offer which is reasonable. You shouldn’t be pressurised to extend your loan – it will cost you more It’s not ok for your lender to ring you during the night or more than once a day chasing you for money, or to contact your employer. You should be able to get in contact with your payday lender. You can complain direct to the Financial Ombudsman Service consumer helpline on 0300 123 9 123 or 0800 023 4567 or via email [email protected] if you are considering a payday loan: Get help with your money troubles. Your local Citizens Advice can provide debt advice and help you sort out your finances. By making a few changes you may be able to avoid taking out an expensive short-term loan.

Pay day loans can be a costly way to deal with short term financial problems and are not suitable for long term money troubles.

The Family CottageIn the 1770s in Edwinstowe Earl Manvers built 4 cottages on Church Street, 3 on the roadside and 1 sideways on. This one also had a joiner’s workshop attached. They all had a toilet and washhouse and a pigsty as outbuildings.

John Woodhead b. 1721 and Mary Cook.his wife b1722 went to live in Budby where he was employed by Earl Manvers as joiner and wheelwright. They had 5 sons and a daughter Ann. He paid rent of 10s 6d on Ladyday for 6 months. The eldest son James moved into the joiner’s cottage in Edwinstowe as joiner and wheelwright when he married Sarah Stocks in 1771. There they had 3 children before moving first to Blidworth then to Papplewick where a new Hall was being built, and he lived there the rest of his life.

His brother John married Mary Machin in 1774 and they moved into the Joiner’s cottage in Edwinstowe then moved away. The youngest son Edmund b1758 married Ann Harrison of Walesby in 1781 and lived there for about 6 years . By 1794 when their 6th child was born they had moved to Edwinstowe and were living in the joiner’s cottage.

The descendants of Edmund and Ann have continued living in the cottage as village joiners and wheelwrights until Ernest died in 1944. He had been able to buy the 4 cottages when Earl Manvers sold the village to sitting tenants in1942.

My husband Robert Woodhead, b.1919 died !979 was the only one of his nephews who had trained as a joiner and when he returned from the war he was given the workshop with hand tools and a motorbike with box

on the side and he began to build up the business. His sister,Edith Cole was living in the Joiners cottage when we married in 1950 and so lived in the middle cottage until my son Mark was born . Whilst I was in hospital Edith offered to swop cottages which my husband and my father did. We pulled several layers of wallpaper and some sacking of the kitchen fireplace wall and uncovered a bread oven. It was taken out as we needed space to put in a fridge. It was when I had our third child Hilary that we extended the cottage over the front lawn and modernized it. Bob,later expanded the joinery business into a building firm which is now carried on by my second son David but from different premises.

I, however, I am still living in the old cottage. I no longer go across the yard to the toilet and washhouse thank goodness. Although when we first married in 1950 we kept a pig in the small pigsty, just for a year and we then kept chickens.

40 years ago the Vicar was contacted by a Mrs Laura Mauerman of Salt Lake City who said she was a Woodhead. He passed the letter to me and that was the start for me of Family History. We corresponded over several years as she had access to the Mormon records. Her ancestor Charles Woodhead a cousin of Edmund, had moved to Manchester with his wife and family at the time that Morman missionaries came to Liverpool and Manchester. They were converted and travelled back with the party to Salt Lake City.Together we traced the family back to 1601 when Oliver Woodhead was born to Thomas and his wife in Clowne .Derbyshire, just before the death of Queen Elizabeth !st.

Skate park updateThe wheels of progress move slowly, but we are still hopeful that the skate park will be built in the autumn. The Parish Council completed a consultation process over the summer, when the plans were available for viewing on the High Street and at points across the village during July.

We were delighted by the response from residents; there was overwhelming support for the design. Some concerns were raised by Friars Park residents and where possible these have been addressed to minimise the impact on them. The designer is now working on the final plans and is keen that our skate park is an innovative and original design. At the time of writing, we are waiting for the noise

assessment to be carried out and subject to this going smoothly, work should start soon. The skate park will be sited by the car park on Friars Park.

Edwinstowe residents will know that this land was given to the village when Rufford School was closed. Our young people have been campaigning for a skate park for more than ten years and we know this will be worth the wait.

The young people have been great and a special thank you to Eddie Fenwick, our Youth Parliament member who has been so supportive throughout the process. We hope that by the next edition of the Village News, we will be celebrating the opening of the park.

Dear AllIn recent weeks we have had several reports that sheds/garages have been broken in to in the Edwinstowe area.

Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof.

However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors. We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure it is as difficult as possible for them.

Shed door and internal security Fit a tough pad bar (also called hasp and staple) secured with coach bolts and a strong padlock to the shed door.

Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges.

Fit a battery-operated shed alarm.

Chain tools, cycles and other valuable equipment together or to a ground anchor using a high security chain or cable and a good quality padlock. This is the most effec tive way of securing property in a shed as long as the chain and padlock are strong enough.

Have you marked the contents of your shed? Make a note of serial numbers and take a photograph of your items.

Register them at www.immobilise.com so police can prove they are yours if they are stolen and later recovered. ThanksPCSO 7455 Laura Bowditch and PC 2380 Ian Appleby

This October will see Goffs Butchers celebrate its 25th birthday. After leaving school David Goff trained as a butcher at his brother Grahams shop in Warsop. A few years later an opportunity arose to manage the meat counter in the Sherwood Shopper Mini Market (now Edwinstowe Chiropractic Centre). David and his wife Kate then transformed what was a store room next to Benhams sweet shop into the butchers that they still run 25 years on.

They had a vision of a traditional butchers with a modern edge and a high class personal friendly service which would suit customers young and old. A vision that is evolving all the time. Over the past 25years David has won many awards for his creative meat displays and sausage recipes. Many of todays customers require dishes that they can cook in a hurry, so Kates training as a chef and David’s flair as a master butcher make a great combination!

Many of David and Kates products are hand made on the premises with Kates corned beef and potato pie becoming legendary. Most of their beef comes from local farmers near Worksop and Scarcliffe, with pork and lamb sourced from local markets.

This Christmas Goffs have some new creations for people to try alongside the traditional favourites like our very popular Festive Roast.

See our website www.goffsbutchers.co.uk or find them on Facebook- Goffs Butchers. Special offers and new products are posted there weekly.

They are also running competitions throughout October and November with the chance to win products from the shop.

David and Kate would like to thank all their customers for their loyal support over the past 25 years .

The friends they have made and the jokes they have shared over the counter have made working in Edwinstowe a joy. Heres to the next 15years (at least).

Ollerton Funeral Director Second In National Good Funeral AwardsDavid Summers, the Funeral Director at A.W.Lymns newest branch in Ollerton came second in the National Good Funeral Awards Best Funeral Director category.

David, who joined Lymn’s five years ago was nominated for his empathetic approach to what is a very difficult time in peoples’ lives and the professional way he conducts funeral services. Included in the citation were details of the work David has done for the people of Ollerton and Boughton in his capacity as Town Councillor and the funds he has raised for local charities.

As the winner of the award is the managing director of the firm which supplies carriages to the Royal Family, David feels that second place out of some 600 nominees was by no means disappointing.

category, David, Pam St. Clement, who presented the awards and Joyce Callaghan, nominee in the Best Funeral Arranger category. Stacey and Joyce are also Employees of A.W. Lymn.

The Ye Olde Jug and Glass: Latest UpdateWe understand work should begin fairly soon on restoring the Jug and Glass. The interior will be converted to four flats with further properties at the rear, which will improve the appearance of both the High Street and East Lane. Edwinstowe Councillor John Peck has been involved for some time in trying to ensure suitable proposals could be brought forward to satisfy the planners. He says: “I spoke to the owner of the property recently and he told me that he hopes to commence work soon. Many people might have preferred a retail business in the building, but there were no takers. The important thing is the outside of the Jug and Glass will be restored and the High Street will look so much better. Boarded up buildings never look good and this is such an important building in the middle of the High Street.”

With regard to the “Treet House” at the top of the High Street, the Parish Council opposed the application to turn it in to a kebab shop, open until 1am and the Planners at Newark and Sherwood District Council agreed and refused the application. We understand that has gone to appeal and we await the outcome.Round the corner, the application to turn the old newsagents in to a Chinese take-away was also turned down and presumably that has also gone to appeal. The site has planning permission to demolish the building and build apartments, which the Parish Council would still prefer. We want these buildings to be brought back into use, but we don’t want the High Street conservation area to have too many take-away food outlets in what is an important tourist village. This went to appeal and was succesfull.

Edwinstowe Hospice Support GroupAs Summer turns to Autumn we find ourselves even closer to a major milestone target of raising £100,000 pounds for The John Eastwood Hospice. We were recently the beneficiaries of over £2000 from the annual garden party organised by Jean Frettsome and Tracey Wilson on Robin Hood Avenue.

This sum, together with existing funds, has enabled us to plan the presentation of £4000 to the hospice at our Coffee Morning on Saturday 23rd November in the Village Hall.

This event will have all the familiar stalls plus Christmas merchandise, so come along and enjoy yourself whilst supporting the hospice.

You can also support online. The hospice has been

shortlisted and selected as 1 of 4 charities in the Nottinghamshire area to be considered for a grant from Lloyds bank. The amount depends on the number of votes that the hospice receives and so with your help, the hospice could receive a fantastic donation of up to £3000.

You can:. Vote online by visiting www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund

Enter JOHN EASTWOOD HOSPICE in the search box and click vote then follow the instructions. You must confirm your vote by clicking the link sent by Lloyds to your email address.Or visit a local branch of Lloyds bank, ask a member of staff for a token and place it in the relevant slot.

Voting starts Monday 23rd September until Friday 1st November 2013. Results will be announced in December.Thank you for your continued support.Phil Robinson

ABBEY ROAD ART AND CARDS GROUPSince starting to meet for our Friday afternoon art and card making group several years ago we have had numerous outings, social occasions and have formed firm friendships amongst our members.

We now have to say “Good Bye” and give our warmest wishes for a happy future to founder members Tom

and Pauline Rainsford who are leaving Edwinstowe to join their family in New Zealand. They will be sorely missed, their contribution to the success of the group has always been appreciated. Thank you both for your total dedication and friendship from all of the members.

A meal for all members has been arranged at the Dukeries Hotel, a scrapbook of articles and photographs from all of the members is ready to be presented to Tom and Pauline which we hope they will enjoy reminiscing over in future, hopefully giving them much pleasure.

GROUP OF FRIARS PARK RESIDENTS GATE OFF ACCESS TO JUBILEE PARKThe Parish Council has received several complaints from villagers, including some Friars Park residents, who are annoyed that a gate has appeared at an access on Old School Drive to the Jubilee Park and the children’s

play area. Some people have wrongly assumed that the Parish Council installed the gate. One Friars Park resident complained her little girl was not allowed to go through to the play area by a man who was about to lock the gate and she had to go a much longer way round.

We wish to stress to villagers, the Parish Council has not installed the gate, nor do we know what times, if at all, the gate is unlocked. It is believed the gate has been installed by a group of Friars Park residents on Old School Drive. The skate park, which is to be built next to the car park at the Mansfield Road end of Jubilee Park and other Jubilee Park facilities cannot now be accessed via this route.

The developer of the estate, Barratt Homes, put several access points to the park and children’s play area, of which Old School Drive is one, although it is not an adopted road.

The Parish Council has advised complainants that if they wish to pursue the matter further and continue to use this access to the park, they should contact the Rights of Way Officer, Notts. County Council, County Hall, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 7QP stating whether they have used this route regularly to Jubilee Park and for how long.

Spotlight StudiosThe pupils of Spotlight Studios, Edwinstowe & Ollerton have just returned from a highly successful trip to Disneyland Paris. The dancers wowed the audience with a showcase of routines including cheerleading, modern jazz and lyrical. During their 3 day trip the dancers were complimented on their performance and professionalism. Now they are looking forward to a new term of excitement and challenges. Watch this space!

What is Healthwatch? The primary task of local Healthwatch is to gather evidence from the views and experiences of patients, service users, carers and the public about their local health and social care services. Healthwatch then provides feedback (both positive or critical) to health and social care commissioners, or in serious case scenarios, to the Care Quality Commission or Healthwatch England, in order to effect service change or improvement. It would actually be more accurate to call this new organisation “Health and Social Carewatch”, as it covers all social care services as well as NHS services. But Healthwatch is the name that Ministers decided to give it.

Why is Healthwatch needed?Three things are happening in health and social care that make it increasingly important for us as consumers of those services to have different ways of feeding back our views and experiences of these critically important personal and family services. Firstly, the structure of the NHS is changing fast and appears to be getting more complicated. Secondly, the current severe budget cuts in Local Authority expenditure (which includes social care services) and the no budget growth position for the NHS (whilst having to meet the needs of an ageing population, more people with long term conditions and rising cost of treatment), is putting increasing strain on the health and social care system. A third factor is the aspiration, long-standing but seldom achieved, of better integrating health and social care services where it makes sense and would save resources.

What is Healthwatch Nottinghamshire doing?Healthwatch Nottinghamshire has now established its organisational base in Hucknall and is at the stage of making itself better known and familiar to the people of Nottinghamshire. To achieve this we are working on a number of fronts: our leaflets are being distributed across the County, our ‘Have Your Say’ forms are available on our webpage and on request from the office, our monthly newsletter is being distributed to our growing mailing list, and we are now recruiting volunteers to act as Healthwatch ‘Champions’ or ‘Outreach Volunteers’.

So if you want to get involved, perhaps have your say, receive a newsletter, become a volunteer or just to get in touch with your local Healthwatch, then:

Lansbury Road Re-surface CompletedThe re-surfacing of the tarmac section of Lansbury Road was completed during the summer. It was Edwinstowe’s worst road surface, very uneven, broken up and often flooded on the bend. Edwinstowe’s County Councillor had had several requests to get it done turned down, but his persistence paid off in the end. John said:

“I’m delighted the worst section of Lansbury Road has been re-surfaced at long last. It looks much better. They weren’t going to touch the concrete section at the bottom at all, but I did manage to get some remedial work done on that section too, so all in all, the road is much better.”

John reports potholes whenever he spots them and makes sure they are repaired quickly. If you spot a bad pothole, or a street light not working, please contact John on:825313 or 07748181719 or email: [email protected]

DOORSTEP SCAMMER CAUGHT IN EDWINSTOWE AFTER PREYING ON ELDERLYEdwinstowe residents, especially the elderly, need to beware people who turn up on the doorstep offering to do jobs. The chances are, they’re out to fleece you. However persuasive the caller is, always say a polite “NO”. When they’ve gone, immediately call the police.

One elderly Edwinstowe resident who lives alone had a recent unpleasant experience. Someone turned up on the doorstep offering to do some garden work. After doing some fairly minor gardening, he said the charge was £2000 and the resident, who felt under pressure handed the man a cheque for that amount. After the man left, the resident told his next door neighbour what had happened and he immediately called the police. The police took the resident to the bank and the cheque was cancelled. What’s more, the doorstep scammer was picked up by the police as he was still in the area.

So, fortunately the story had a happy ending, but all our elderly residents should heed the warning. If you do want some work doing on your house or garden, use a legitimate business. Often, a local, well known and recommended business is your best bet.

Chernobyl Children Lifeline CharityNewark & Sherwood LinkTwice a year we bring needy children from Belarus who still live in the contaminated area from the fallout of the Chernobyl disaster. The children have weak immune systems and may have other health problems as well as living in a dire economic situation. Nothing is infectious with these children and a 3 week respite makes a significant impact on their health. We are looking for hosts to look after these children for 3 weeks from Sunday 16th February - 9th March 2014. The hosts can be couples with children of any age, couples without

children, female living alone or retired persons. They will live with you for the full 3 weeks. We as a charity organise trips for them which you and your own children are welcome. The programme is varied from seaside, swimming and places of interest. You do not have to go on all visits as we can always arrange support to help. You will have 24 hour 7 day support from me, translators and other supporting families. I have recently moved to the Edwinstowe area and have decided to enlist families within and close to the area. If you think you could be of help to these children (age 9 - 11) then please give me a call for more information. Myself and a female member of the committee will arrange a meeting in your home if you need more detail of the involvement. Please contact me Mr Bob Crampton 01623 237824 or 07815473802

ChristmasMoney Tips

Job applicationsDo you have to disclose convictions or cautions?

“I’m dreading Christmas this year because we are really struggling to pay the bills and there’s no cash to spare for cards, presents and so on.

What can we do?”

Try these key tips:

Plan ahead – what can you afford?

Don’t forget important everyday bills – rent, Council Tax etc still need to be paid

Keep things simple and shop with cash – you can't spend what you don’t have

Try not to be pressurised into buying expensive toys or latest gadgets which don’t always last

Shop around - it may be cheaper somewhere else (or in the sales)

If you run up an overdraft – the interest you have to pay may be expensive

Check the interest rate and small print BEFORE signing any credit agreement – can you keep up the repayments?

Get advice quickly if you run into debt problems. Don't ignore them and hope they'll go away - they won't.

If you only do one thing this month, work out how much you can afford to spend on each person this Christmas - and stick to it.

If an employer asks whether you have any cautions or convictions, you may want to check first whether you have to disclose them. Not all cautions or convictions have to be disclosed – only “unspent” ones - and disclosing them when you don’t need to could affect your job prospects.

There are exceptions where applicants have to declare both spent and unspent convictions, usually because they are applying for a job working with

children or vulnerable adults.

What is a “spent” conviction? This depends on how long ago the offence was committed and what it was – you may need to get detailed advice.

Insurance:You must inform your insurance company of any unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings and convictions – even if they have not asked for details.

Disclosure and Barring Service checksA job applicant (or volunteer) can now pay a fee of £13 a year to subscribe online to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a portable DBS certificate.

This means your DBS certificate is kept up-to-date so you can take it with you from one job to the next, provided you are doing a similar type of job. You will not have to pay for a new criminal record check every time you change jobs.

I was asked recently what was my incentive and inspiration for undertaking these walks for the Hospice. The answer is quite simple!

My wife and other members of my family and friends have been looked after with such care and dignity at the Hospice. The people working there, both staff and volunteers make what is often a terrible situation more bearable for the person they are caring for while supporting their families. I have nothing but admiration for what they do and in a small way I am trying to give back for the fantastic work they have done and I am sure they will continue to do.

You never know what life has in store for you and should I personally or any other

family and friends I have need their help in the future, I hope the Hospice is still there and doing what it does so well. Our Hospice is a local treasure. We would be a poorer place to live without it, so it needs everyone’s support.

Any support large or small is very much appreciated.Kind regards, Brian Hawkins

News and views from St Mary’s

Remember, remember the 5th of November. I guess many of us will enjoy fireworks and bonfire toffee on or around the 5th November. Let us do so safely! Perhaps fewer of us remember what it was all about. And it is important in these days of constant vigilance because of terrorism that we stand for peaceful and just political processes.

As important to us at St Mary’s and to many others in our village is when we remember with love all our loved ones who have died. We do this especially at the Remembering Service at 3pm. on 3rd November.

As a village we also have the important remembering day, Remembrance Sunday on 10th November with the service in St Mary’s at 10.00am before going to the war memorial for the 11.00am Act of Remembrance. The next day of course is Armistice Day.

And coming up fast is Christmas. We prepare for this during Advent when we remember Jesus’ love and teaching showing us how to face the future now with realistic hope and care for one another. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of a baby 2 thousand years ago in a troubled land we dedicate ourselves to do all we can to build a more just and fair world whether in this village or in the Land of the Holy One.

If there is anyone or anything you would like remembered in prayer at St Mary’s do let us know; there is also a book in church where you can write such prayer requests.

Remember, remember the 5th of November; but remember a lot more as well. With my love and prayer

Fr Tony Evans, Vicar of Edwinstowe, Clipstone and Perlethorpe.

The Sherwood Forest Trust (SFT) is delighted to announce that it has invited Dr Patrick Candler to assist in the development of its future business and plans.

Working closely with the Board of Trustees, Patrick will be taking on the role of Interim Chief Executive and will lead the staff team as it expands and develops its already significant portfolio of work in the Sherwood area.

Patrick has significant experience of working in the voluntary and public sectors at regional, county and local levels. Most recently he was a Service Director and then Group Manager, Country Parks and Green Estate Services at Nottinghamshire County Council and we are looking forward to using his knowledge, expertise and experience in support of the Trust.

As many Village News readers will know, The Sherwood Forest Trust is the only registered charity and company dedicated to the preservation, conservation but also cultural, heritage, community and economic development of Sherwood Forest - an area that stretches from Worksop in the north of the county to parts of Nottingham City.

For the past ten years the Trust has achieved many notable successes in the Sherwood area and has supported many organisations and individuals who have wanted to help improve their communities. However, times are changing and to meet an array of many new challenges, we will be looking hard at what we need to do to respond to these. For example, we have already spent a great deal of time working with other organisations to help develop a new Heritage Lottery Funding bid which could bring up to £3m into Sherwood Forest. We will know in a few weeks time whether we have been successful, so our fingers are crossed!

If you want to know more about the work of the Trust and how we could help you, please do not hesitate to drop into our offices or call us on:

Budget ChallengeMany people will have seen that Nottinghamshire County Council has got to find £154 million of savings over the next three years. This is an enormous challenge and will mean inevitable cuts in many services. This is on top of the £80 million of cuts which took place over the past four years. The reason is that the Government has made huge cuts to the grants to Councils and all Councils are in the same boat. These grants form a large part of the budget as Council Tax is less than 50% of the income. Also, Council tax has been frozen for several years, which people obviously welcome, but as with household budgets, costs have been rising and inflation has been gradually chipping away. Another big reason is that people are living longer and the County Council’s Social Care budget for the elderly and disabled is rising.

The County Council is undertaking the biggest public consultation ever and is urging people to take a few minutes to make their views known as to what services they are prepared to see reduced or retained.

Keeping active at King EdwinKeeping active is an important part of life at King Edwin. As well as football, cricket and athletics, we now offer a running club. The club has recently taken part in the Nottingham mini marathon. We have also sent children to dance workshops at The Dukeries. We continued our links with Thoresby Cricket Club.

Our school sports day was a chance for all children to take part and enjoy sport. All of the King Edwin community- staff, children and parents offered support to every one participating.

Finally, from this September we now have an expert sports coach teaching part time in school. We continue our commitment to provide sport for everyone as part of a healthy life style.

The boy’s football team had an outstanding season winning the Dukeries league by an impressive margin, only losing one game all season. The team also managed to get past the first round of the county-cup (a first for their manager and year 6 teacher – Mr Ogle) and reached the final no-less. Cotgrave Candleby Lane ended up winning the final, 3-1. The match was toughly contested by both teams.

In other sport, the Year 5’s took part in the ‘Chance to Shine’ cricket tournament. They did very well and reached the final; only to get beaten, pushing them out of a place at Lady Bay for the county finals. Finally, the Key Stage 2 children representing King Edwin were sent to the Dukeries for an outdoor athletics event. King Edwin came out on top of Walesby in the boy’s competition, narrowly finishing behind them in the girl’s events.

Have you a birth, death or marriage you wish to announce? We have been getting a few requests to include such announcements. Therefore, in future editions we are going to have a page for people who wish to announce a birth, death or marriage of Edwinstowe residents. We do not have much room, so we will have to have a strict limit of 50 words maximum (no photographs). We have to set a limit because space is tight and extra pages mean extra printing costs.
