The specimens were collected between 1955 and 2004, in a period of time when general collecting was not a priority in the country. He travelled all over the country but his collections were mainly made in the surroundings of Debrecen, in the Zemplén, Bükk, Mátra, and Gerecse Mts, the Little Hungarian Plain (Kisalföld), Bársonyos Hills and Bakonyalja, and the surroundings of Sopron and Kőszeg. Besides these, col- lections were made in certain areas of historical Hungary (e.g. Transylvania, parts of Slovakia) as well as in Croatia, Poland, Italy, Germany, and others. Some species were collected for him by friends, and cultivated plants are also represented in his collection. The sheets are precisely labelled in Hun- garian or Latin, or both, mainly with handwriting. Besides the location, in most cases, the elevation, notes on the habitat, and additional notes appear;

T h e herbar ium o f Endre Jeney, consisting o f about 18,000 specimens, was acquired by the Hungar ian Na tu ra l H i s t o r y Museum i n 2006 and the incorpora t ion o f that in to the herbar ium o f the Botanical Depar tment (BP) is near ing comple t ion . The specimens were collected between 1955 and 2004, i n a per iod o f t ime when general collecting was not a p r i o r i t y i n the country . He travelled all over the country but his collections were main ly made i n the surroundings o f Debrecen, i n the Zemplén, Bükk, Mátra, and Gerecse Mts , the L i t t l e Hungar i an Plain (Kisalföld), Bársonyos Hi l l s and Bakonyalja, and the surroundings o f Sopron and Kőszeg. Besides these, collections were made i n certain areas o f historical Hungary (e.g. Transylvania, parts o f Slovakia) as wel l as i n Croatia, Poland, I ta ly , Germany, and others. Some species were collected for h i m by friends, and cul t ivated plants are also represented i n his collection. The sheets are precisely labelled i n H u n garian or La t in , or bo th , ma in ly w i t h handwr i t ing . Besides the locat ion, i n most cases, the elevation, notes on the habitat, and addi t ional notes appear;

sometimes even photos accompany the specimen. M a i n l y i n his earlier collections, presumably due to the lack o f adequate maps, and as i t was routinely pract iced by other collectors also i n the 1950s and 1960s, the collection locali ty was no t more than a note w i t h the name (or v i c in i ty ) o f the nearest settlement.

Endre Jeney only published a small fragment o f his f lorist ical results ( B A R I N A 2006, D A N C Z A 2007), thus these remained practically u n k n o w n both i n Hungary and abroad. W i t h the present article we in tend to launch a series o f reports which , as the elaboration o f the collection proceeds, w i l l make data o f the Jeney collection easily accessible to interested professionals.

The revision o f the Pteridophyta part o f the Jeney herbarium, and processing o f the data documented on the labels were carried out i n December 2006 and January 2007. T h e present repor t contains data displayed on the labels in abbreviated forms, w i thou t loss o f any essential informat ion . The general location o f the collecting is followed by addit ional geographical name(s) and information on the habitat (e.g. " in spruce forest"). The Hungarian toponyms are listed according to the present spelling, and these are ind i cated as they are classified i n the present Hungar ian administrative borders. Geographical names not present i n recent tourist maps, or on maps o f the Uni f i ed Nat ional Mapp ing System ( E O T R ) , scale 1:10,000, and wh ich do not occur i n the w o r k o f F Ö L D I (1981), are indicated between quotat ion marks. The notes by the author o f this report, fol lowing the specimen data, are in square brackets. The geographical name, and that o f the area or region (e.g. mountains, county), which facilitate the orientation o f the reader are i n brackets, fo l lowed by the elevation as no ted on the label, the date o f collecting, and the collector's name (only i f other than Endre Jeney). I n some cases we quote the annotations the collector made on the label since this migh t give impor tan t in format ion for any subsequent study. Finally, the inventory number o f the Pteridophyta collection o f the Department o f Botany o f the H u n garian Natural His tory Museum (BP) is recorded; i f the sheet has duplicate(s) that remain part o f the collection at BP, these also appear w i t h their inventory numbers. The nomenclature o f the species follows T U T I N et al. (1993).

T h e Pter idophyta collection o f Endre Jeney contains 320 specimens

(inch 32 duplicate) altogether. O f these, 215 specimens were collected i n

Hungary , 51 f r o m Romania (ma in ly f r o m Transylvania) , 11 f r o m Poland,

7 f r o m I ta ly (the A lps ) , 3 f r o m Slovakia and 1 f r o m Croat ia . A m o n g the

notable collections is, according to our present knowledge, the first record

o f Azolla ftliculoides f r om Hungary (Tata) , wh ich can be a t t r ibu ted to

Endre Jeney. Salvinia natans near Neszmély, i n the Li t t l e Hungar ian Plain

is k n o w n only f r o m his collection. I n some cases the last k n o w n collect ion

f rom certain areas are i n his herbar ium. Hi s data o f regional importance

were unfortunately left out f rom a number o f florist ical works (e.g. V O J T K Ó

2001, RÉV et al. 2006) because his herbar ium was practically u n k n o w n .

W i t h our planned series o f reports i t is hoped that we can f i l l the gap.
