Sidebar May 2017

I just finished mowing my lawn.

Technically I have one more Sidebar as I will be on vacation the month of June; however I am leaving that Herald for the inter-im Senior Pastor. Consequently, this is my last Sidebar and I wish I had something really clever to write but cleverness seems evasive due to a strange brew of emotions. I tell people to look back but don't stare; yet staring seems appropriate when I glance back and see 867 services of worship (Sundays and Holy Days). A close estimate of 510 Memorial Services and as many wed-dings, baptisms, and nearly a thousand Sidebars. The Herald was once a weekly newsletter! My hope is that I have been a 'good enough pastor' fulfilling the call to “lead us into the new millennium.” I also pray that I have followed Jesus' teachings and that I have been guided by The Holy Spirit.

Cleaning out the office has a cathartic effect, as well as, a practical outcome. I came across a paper titled “A Final Thought,” which seems practical as well as, well, clever! It originally came from a Quaker Newsletter.

A Final Thought

Live beneath your means

Return everything you borrow

Stop blaming other people

Admit it when you make a mistake

Give clothes not worn for three years to charity

Do something nice and try not to get caught

Listen more; talk less

Everyday take a 30 minute walk

Strive for excellence, not perfection

Be on time

Don't make excuses

Don't argue

Give someone the last word (that one is mine)

Get organized

Be kind to kind people

Be kind to unkind people

Let someone cut ahead of you in line

Take time to be alone

Cultivate good manners

Be humble

Realize that life isn't fair

Know when to keep your mouth shut

Go an entire day without criticizing anyone

Learn from the past

Plan for the future

Live in the present

Don't sweat the small stuff

It's all small stuff

I'll meet you 'round the bend my friend, where souls can heal and hearts can mend. It's been a great time. Love, Dr. John

May 2017

Spiritual Corner

Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul. Edward Abbey

At the Tallmadge City Council meeting on Thursday, May 11, 2017, I withdrew the proposal for the con-struction of a columbarium in the church courtyard. The reason for this decision is this: The Planning & Zoning Committee advised City Council to deny the expansion of the conditional permit based on a lack of building code qualifiers. What this means is that the city is in new territory. Had city council voted, we would need six votes of seven council members to overturn the Planning & Zoning recommendation. When a proposal fails the applicant must wait twelve months before re-submitting the proposal. A with-drawn proposal may be submitted any time. Withdrawing the application was initiated because Mayor Da-vid Kline will form an ad hoc committee to research and discern qualifiers for churches in Tallmadge to build columbaria.

Municipalities are out of land for cemeteries which will drive the cost of burial through the proverbial roof. Cremation has become a viable option as nearly 50% of families are opting for cremation rather than buri-al. Columbaria are coming.

What does this mean to the church? Our discernment process and formal application to construct a col-umbarium and memorial garden was initiated out of a sense of mission and purpose. The church is re-sponsible for the spiritual care of its members. When a person dies there is a sacred trust that we, the church, will provide care and support. To me, this means there is an arc of care from birth, through life to death and life eternal. Historically churches across this country had cemeteries on the church property. Historically, the burial responsibility was abdicated with community cemeteries and later corporate enti-ties making burial a profitable business. The sacredness of death and care for the deceased and the family was diminished when a price tag was placed on land and burial.

First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, UCC decided to accept the responsibility of spiritual care to our families who choose cremation and interment in the church's columbarium. When I arrived here eighteen years ago I felt The Spirit in the area called the courtyard. Over the course of time I held a blessing of the pets in the courtyard as well as two memorial services. When this latest proposal was initiated I went to the courtyard to pray. I offered prayers for the birch tree after it was removed due to disease thanking God for the tree. I offered prayers of thanksgiving for the flowering bushes and plants. I prayed that God bless this space of the courtyard for holding the sacred remains of our family members.

The action of this church and specifically the Memorial & Columbarium Committee (which has had several members come and go due to specific goals over the last three years) has served a calling beyond our awareness. The City of Tallmadge is looking at how to accommodate and support the faith communities located in the city and maintain the integrity of the city's standards. Tallmadge is a wonderful city with a spirit of cooperation between government, business, schools and faith communities. First Congregational Church of Tallmadge, UCC is a regional church founded 209 years ago as the center of this community. May we continue to find the balance of the temporal, the sacred and the eternal.

SENIOR PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Search Committee continues to review Ministerial Profiles and interview potential candidates for the position of Senior Pastor. Currently the committee does not have a final candidate for the position. On Thursday, April 20, 2017, Moderator, Ginny Collins, Pastoral Staff Relations Chair, Gary Myers and myself, met with the Reverend Doctor Neal Sadler to serve as Transition Interim Senior Pastor until a settled pas-tor is called by the congregation to serve this church. The position of Transitional Interim Minister does not require a call by the Congregation, but only an affirmative vote of Executive Council. Executive Council voted unanimously to call Reverend Doctor Neal Sadler to Covenant as the Transitional Interim Senior Pastor at their meeting on May 9, 2017. Rev. Sadler is a man of quiet conviction and I quote from his Min-isterial Profile, “I am passionate about God’s grace. God’s grace is discovered in the compassion of God’s people, guided by God’s Word, strengthened in prayer, and filled with God’s spirit.” A Transitional Minister brings unique gifts, skills and experiences and is called to speak the truth with love. The tasks include the following: Tending to the basic pastoral duties with integrity; Being a heal-ing presence to the congregation after the retirement of the recent pastor; Preparing the congregation for a positive beginning for a new settled pastor by facilitating and developing new gifts needed for fresh ministry and a growing church; Encourages healthy relationships and organizational structures that will promote, sustain and support the vision of the church; Completing a congregational assessment, which includes conversations with church members, trends in membership, attendance, programming and giving; The Transitional Minister uncovers and addresses the challenges and roadblocks to effective ministries and highlights opportunities for growth and possibilities for new areas of ministry; May make tough calls by con-fronting unhealthy relationships in staff and lay leadership that are ineffective or problematic; Encouraging the congregation to be one of hope and to affirm and recognize their gifts and values; Celebrates the good work that is being done and helps the congregation uncover the dreams and discernment of a new future from the love and grace of a faithful God. Rev. Neal, as he prefers to be addressed, retired from Medina United Church of Christ in March 2016. He is married to his wife Carolyn and together they enjoy hiking, backpacking, cycling and camping. Rev. Sadler’s Covenant with First Congregational Church of Tallmadge will begin on June 12, 2017 and be a half-time position of 20/25 hours per week, until September 2017. After September 24, 2017 the hours will increase to ¾ time or approximately 30/35 hours per week. The Covenant will be on a month to month basis until a settled pastor is called to fill the vacant position. Rev. Neal has previously scheduled vacation time and he will be gone for 2 weeks in August and again for 2 weeks in September. Rev. Sadler’s duties will include preaching Sunday worship, assisting the current Pastoral Care Team with hospital and shut-in calls, as well as the daily business and functions of the church. He will also conduct baptisms, funerals/memorial services and weddings as needed. Rev. Neal will be present for Board and Executive Council meetings. Rev. Neal will sign the Transition Interim Covenant at the June 13, 2017 Ex-ecutive Council meeting. Please pray for Rev. Neal as he prepares to serve our church family. The committee asks for con-tinued prayers as they discern the person that will be called to serve First Congregational Church of Tallmadge as the Senior Pastor. VBS supplies needed

Vacation Bible School at First Congregational Church is always a huge success, because we have great people that

come together to make it happen. We always have great helpers during the week, both youth and adults, and we

also have great support from people willing to make donations. This year’s supply list (located below) is a little differ-

ent, as there will be more science than arts and crafts, so if you would rather give a donation than purchase items

directly from the list, that is fine too and we will purchase the items we need. If you do decide to purchase some-

Hello,

I know we are all looking forward to spring, even with our mild winter. We welcome springtime.

Due to the popularity of fiction books, we have done some re-arranging. They were difficult for some to reach and see on the top shelves, but now they are more accessible. I hope you like their new location.

Recently, WNI had Dr. Carol P. Vaccariello as a guest speaker telling of her journey on The Camano Trail (a 500 mile walking trail) across Spain. She is a very intelligent and spiritual person. She gave a very interesting and informative talk, along with showing slides of her fascinating adventures. Her book, “The Lion of God Archangel Ari ‘El’,” is a book about her many “visions.” She writes about how she encounters angels and talks to them, which she calls “waking dreams.” Some things she encounters are frightening, but she realizes she must face fear of the unknown before finding peace and God’s love, along with her mission. The encounters help guide her life and in turn, enable her to help others. These visions/dreams are explained so clearly in this book that it would be difficult not to be-lieve her experiences. It is a very interesting book to read.

Our book “give-away” (LOCATED IN THE LIBRARY) has an offering of many book. A big thanks to Dr. John and a friend that gave us her late husband’s collection for the donations. There’s something for everyone’s taste and in-terest, so please come, look, and take a book.

Blessings,

Jo Hostutler

Memorial Garden with Columbarium Committee (MGCC)

This has been a very busy month (April –May) for the members of the MGCC. We had meetings! Many meetings! Regular monthly committee meetings, Wednesday morning sessions for completion of projects, morning meetings to strategize for Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, evening meetings with the P&Z Commission, a congregational/community meeting, and this Thursday, a City Council meeting. Dr. John has served as the primary spokesperson at the “city” meetings since he is so accustomed to public speaking. Kudos to the members of the MGCC for their participation and attendance (in force) at all of these get-togethers.

At our regular MGCC meeting on May 10th we shared insights gained from the recent P&Z meeting held on May 4th. The community meeting led by a trained mediator was surprisingly under attended, representing only 7 residences out of the 107 invitations mailed. Considering the immediacy of the May 11th City Council meeting, all members of the MGCC were invit-ed to attend as support for FCC and Dr. John. Then our thinking turned to the future as we began to explore the possibilities for Phase 4.

Mission Trip Prayers

On June 9th, First Congregational Church will be sending 14 people to share the love of God. They will be helping
