Poseidonians The Poseidonians forgot the Greek language

after so many centuries of minglingwith Tyrrhenians, Latins, and other foreigners. The only thing surviving from their ancestors

was a Greek festival, with beautiful rites, with lyres and flutes, contests and wreaths.

And it was their habit toward the festival’s endto tell each other about their ancient customs

and once again to speak Greek namesthat only a few of them still recognized.

And so their festival always had a melancholy endingbecause they remembered that they too were Greeks,

they too once upon a time were citizens of Magna Graecia;and how low they’d fallen now, what they’d become,

living and speaking like barbarians, cut off so disastrously from the Greek way of life.

15TH ANNIVERSARY GREETINGS

In 1994, thanks to the foresight and the generous contributions of leading individuals and

organisations, the Hellenic Centre opened its doors for the first time. The Founders’

purposes were to create a UK focus for the promotion of Greek cultural heritage, to provide

a home for the activities of the manifold cultural organisations already active in Britain and

to offer opportunities for new initiatives made possible by the Centre’s magnificent facilities.

Fifteen years on, these early ambitions have been more than amply fulfilled. Dedicated effort,

hard work and determination on the part of the Governing Body, the Executive Board, the

member organisations and the staff have made the Hellenic Centre a unique example of its

kind in the world-wide Greek and Cypriot Diaspora.

We offer our warmest congratulations to the Hellenic Centre on this milestone anniversary

and our best wishes for its continued success. On the evidence of the past fifteen years,

we are fully confident that the Centre will continue to grow and prosper for the benefit

of Hellenism and the Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom.

The Hellenic Centre Celebrating 15 years The Hellenic Centre Celebrating 15 years

It seems only yesterday that we welcomed His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch

Bartholomew I to bless our new and imposing Hellenic Centre in the heart of London and

a few months later the then president of Cyprus, Mr Glafkos Clerides, to inaugurate it. In fact

it is fifteen years ago, but our aims and objectives have not changed. We sought to provide a

home for the various societies of the Hellenic Community, and to create a Centre from which

we could reach out to the wider Hellenic Diaspora. We also wanted to extend knowledge of

Hellenic culture, Greece and Cyprus to all those living in the British Isles, and, perhaps most

importantly, to encourage our children to retain their proud heritage when the first generation

of Greek immigrants is no longer there to keep traditions alive.

As a result of the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of so many, and the overwhelmingly

generous financial support which the Centre has received, I think we can truly say that the

project has been a success beyond anything we could have hoped. In this commemorative

publication we record the names of many of those who have contributed both financially

and with their time and energy to the Hellenic Centre. I know many names have been omitted

but I would like to assure them that every single contribution is much appreciated. We are

forever grateful. One of the major successes of the Centre is reflected in the eminent speakers,

musicians and academics who have honoured us with their contributions, and the amazingly

rich and varied exhibitions which we have hosted. All of this has been much appreciated

not only by our members but by the many visitors attracted by our programme of events.

We are now considered an integral part of the neighbourhood, the City of Westminster and

the cultural life of London. We will nurture this relationship and seek to build on it.

We look to the future with confidence. We will continue to be ever mindful of the interests

of the younger generation and all Hellenes of the Diaspora, and will continue to work in close

cooperation with the host community, the governments of Greece and Cyprus, and our

Archbishopric of Thyateira and Great Britain.

Costas Kleanthous

Chairman

Hellenic Community Trust

With the creation of the Hellenic Centre fifteen years ago, a dream of the Hellenic

Community became a reality. Over the years the Hellenic Centre has become a natural home

for first class social and cultural events, not only for Hellenes but for the public in general.

Today we reap the benefit of the hard work and financial generosity of all those individuals,

past and present, involved in creating the Centre and ensuring its continuation and smooth

running. We are grateful to all of them, and we look to the future with hope and confidence,

especially as more and more people of the younger generation attend our events and gatherings.

Koula Lemos

Chairman, Executive Board

The Hellenic Centre

The Hellenic Centre is much more than a building. It is a dynamic, changing organisation,

with its own life and rhythms that continue all day long, sometimes into the small hours.

In the morning, a room might be arranged for a meeting with chairs gathered efficiently

around the table; by afternoon, it is an exhibition space, lit to bring out the colours of the

paintings; in the evening it becomes a lecture hall, filled with the hush of people listening.

In this microcosm of the Hellenic world, activity never stops. Visitors come and go, for Greek

lessons, for concerts, for talks and for parties.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our team of staff, who work hard

beyond the call of duty, and our volunteers, many of whom cheerfully give up their time

for a project which is close to their hearts. As the Director of the Centre I feel privileged

to work with such a lively and inspiring group of people. However tired I may sometimes be,

I always feel proud and fortunate to be a part of this project, which has been at the centre

of my life for more than ten years.

his year the Hellenic Centrecelebrates its fifteenthanniversary, itself anaffirmation of the place it

has come to occupy in the life of thecommunity. The Centre’s mission is to provide a base for Hellenic culture in London, to bring together Greeksand Greek Cypriots in the diaspora, and to nurture the unique relationshipbetween Britain and the Hellenicworld. In its short lifetime it hasbecome a home for all aspects ofHellenism and many kinds of culturalcooperation and exchange. The 2006exhibition of Greek embroideries fromthe collections of the Benaki Museumin Athens and the Victoria and AlbertMuseum in London, which drewalmost two thousand visitors, was adazzling example of the pleasures andpossibilities offered by such ventures.

The idea for a centre for all thingsHellenic took shape in the late 1970s,when a group of community spiritedGreeks got together to provide a focusfor Greek and Greek Cypriot culture inLondon. The Hellenic Cultural Centrewas formed in 1978 through the hardwork of a group of people from bothcommunities, bringing together existingGreek and Greek Cypriot societies.Among its aims was the acquisition of a building in the centre of London to house its member societies and be a credible centre from which to

disseminate Hellenic culture. Althoughduring its life it had no permanenthome, it organised many memorableevents. At the same time the Lykion tonHellinidon, which was formed in 1979,was also looking for premises.

When a separate group of like-mindedindividuals with the same aims wasformed in December 1987, under theleadership of Andreas and Mitsi David, both the Hellenic Cultural Centre andLykion ton Hellinidon readily joinedtheir efforts.

Our present home, a beautiful Portlandstone and red brick building in one of the most charming and sought after areas of London, was built in the early 1900s as a Swedish gymnastics college. With the help of a generous first donation by the A G Leventis Foundation, Mr and Mrs Stelios Ioannou, Fafalios ShippingSA, the Bank of Cyprus London Ltd, the Hellenic Cultural Centre and theLykion ton Hellinidon, whose offices are housed in the Centre, the building was purchased for £1.25 million in1992.The Hellenic Community Trust wasestablished as a charitable body to take ownership of the building, and an appeal was launched to raise the £2 million needed for its refurbishment.

With subsequent donations from theGovernments of Cyprus and Greece, the Popular Bank of Cyprus, Ergobank,

the families and foundations of Kedros,Laskarides, Latsis, Lemos, Mouskas,Paraskevaides, Papakokkinos andYemelos, the Michael Marks CharitableTrust and many individual donors andmembers, 16-18 Paddington Street wastransformed into the elegant space weenjoy today. In 1993, with renovationsalready underway, the building wasblessed by His All Holiness theEcumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I. The Centre was officially inaugurated onNovember 18th 1994 by His Excellencythe President of the Republic of Cyprus,Mr. Glafcos Clerides.

As a project of the Hellenic CommunityTrust, the Hellenic Centre is run by theTrustees and their Executive Board, who are all volunteers. A full timeDirector manages the Centre on a day to day basis, with the necessaryadministrative support.

In the fifteen years since its creation the Centre has hosted a great variety of exhibitions, lectures, performances, film screenings, discussions, readingsand presentations, most of them free to the public. Some are organiseddirectly by the Centre, and some by our energetic member societies, amongthem the Cypriot Estia of London, theLondon Hellenic Society, the Lykion ton Hellinidon, the Eteria EllinonEpistimonon, the Hellenic Foundationand the Macedonian Society of GreatBritain. We place a particularly high

value on attracting new generations of Greeks, born here, who want to keep in touch with their roots, theirlanguage and their culture. One of our core activities since 1999 has beenthe provision of Greek language coursesat a variety of levels and at times to suit everyone.

From its inception the Centre establishedclose working relationships with theChurch and with the governments ofGreece and Cyprus and their missions in the UK. The Archbishop of Thyateira, the Ambassador of the HellenicRepublic and the High Commissionerfor the Republic of Cyprus have been its patrons from the start. Over the yearswe have also formed links with localgovernment and communityorganisations, and opened our doors to local companies, individuals andmembers for corporate and privateconferences and functions. All thesecontacts and connections haveextended the Centre’s reach beyond theHellenic community and helped us tobuild ties of friendship and cooperation.

In the pages that follow you can readabout a small selection of our activitiesover the last fifteen years. A completelist of our events can be found at theend of this publication. With your helpand participation, we look forward to astill more exciting future.

he Hellenic Centre hasbecome an important venuefor the visual arts, hostingmajor historical shows in

the high-ceilinged Great Hall andshowcasing the work of new artists inthe more intimate Friends’ Room. Ouropening exhibition , “Nineteenth andTwentieth Century Greek Paintings”from the A.G. Leventis Collection, gave a foretaste of the great variety of stylesand subject matter represented inHellenic art, and its long dialogue withboth Western and Byzantine forms.

Some of our most important exhibitionshave been organised in cooperation withthe governments of Greece and Cyprus,as well as major museums. “ThroughRomantic Eyes” (1996), from the collectionof the Benaki Museum in Athens, featuredEuropean images of nineteenth centuryGreece, from the silvery landscapes ofwatercolourists like Edward Lear to thedramatic images by French and Italianartists of the War of Independence.

On our tenth anniversary, whichcoincided with the accession of Cyprus to the European Union, President TassosPapadopoulos inaugurated “Colours of Medieval Cyprus,” an exhibition ofsurprisingly modern-looking pottery andworks on paper curated with the LeventisMunicipal Museum of Nicosia. Our fourmajor icon exhibitions, including “AfterByzantium” in 1996, from the collection ofMarianna Latsis, “Conversation with God”in 1998, in cooperation with the ByzantineMuseum of Athens, and “Cyprus the HolyIsland: Icons through the Centuries” in2000, all brought works of art central toOrthodox worship to a new audience.

Contemporary art is just as important in the life of the Centre. As well as thework of well-known artists—among themGeorge Pol Georgiou, TelemachosKanthos and Alecos Fassianos—we alwaysmake space available for newer talent, whether Greek or Greek Cypriot or inspired by Greece or Cyprus. Groupshows have been especially popular, such

as the exhibition of work by young UK-based artists of Greek and Cypriotextraction in 1997 to 2005’s “Somatopia:Mapping Sites, Siting Bodies,” producedby artists from Cyprus.

Photography offers direct glimpses ofthe past and new ways of seeing thepresent. “Greece in the Second WorldWar” (1995), in association with theCultural Centre of the Municipality ofAthens, brought together photographsand documents from the period. RenoWideson’s beautiful pictures of Cyprusand Greece have filled our walls onseveral occasions, offering a record of our changing landscapes from the 1940sto the present. The 2002 exhibition ofphotographs by Frederic Boissonas, taken in Greece between 1900 and 1922,brought an older lost world to life; showsby contemporary photographers, such as Chryssa Nikoleri’s “Urban Landscape”(2001) and Hector Dimissianos’ “TheFringes of the City” (1999), presentaspects of Greece less often seen abroad.

In 2006, the Hellenic Centre collaboratedfor the first time with a major Britishmuseum to put together one of ourmost beautiful exhibitions, whichattracted almost 2,000 visitors. “GreekEmbroidery, 17th to 19th Century,”organised with the Victoria and AlbertMuseum, reunited pieces brought backfrom Greece by English collectors in the early 1900s with work from theBenaki Museum in Athens. Costumesworn on festive days, fine pieces madefor weddings and decorated householdlinens came together to give a rich and intimate sense of the art made by women to enhance everyday life.

ectures on a wide variety of subjects have been amainstay of the Centre’sactivities from the beginning,

and we have been privileged towelcome many distinguished speakersfrom the spheres of politics, academia, medicine, literature and the arts.

Early on, in 1995, we were addressed by two of Britain’s most learnedparliamentarians from opposite ends of the political spectrum, Enoch Powelland Michael Foot, as part of a seriesentitled “We are all Greek—Why?” Therole of Hellenic culture in the widerworld has been a frequent theme, withcontributions from historians (MichaelWood on the Kalas villages in Pakistan, settled by Alexander’s troops), literaryscholars (David Ricks on Cavafy andEnglish poetry, Anthony Hirst on Oscar Wilde’s response to Greece),Byzantinologists (Angeliki Laiou on themulti-ethnic state) and musicologists

(Marcos Dragoumis on the music of Asia minor). Nor have we neglected the political integration of Greece andCyprus into the new Europe: in 1999 we heard from George Vasiliou, formerpresident of the Republic of Cyprus, about his country’s accession to theEuropean Union, for which he was thechief negotiator.

Given the length and richness of Greekhistory, it is perhaps not surprising thatthe past is a frequent theme. Among thehistorians and writers who have spokenhere are Mark Mazower (on Greeks andJews in the shadow of the Holocaust),Richard Clogg (on the Greek diaspora),Michael Llewellyn-Smith (on Greece andBritish politicians), Paschalis Kitromilides(on Greek cultural traditions in AsiaMinor) and the late Sir David Hunt, warveteran, diplomat, philhellene andMastermind champion, who hosted aday on Greece in the Second World War.The civilisation of Byzantium has been

celebrated and discussed by MariannaKoromila and John Julius Norwichamong many others; in 2001 JulianChrisostomidou of Royal Holloway,University of London, held a series ofseminars. In 2003 we held acommemoration of the 550thanniversary of the fall of Constantinople;in 2005 the Benaki Museum’s AnthiBalsamaki gave a fascinating account ofthe symbolism and secrets of Byzantineiconography. In November 2008 wewelcomed Maria Vassilaki, curator of themajor Byzantium exhibition at the RoyalAcademy of Arts. The ancient world hasclaimed its share of attention, withlectures on Chios in classical antiquity, the maritime archaeology of the Aegean, the gold of Macedonia, the languagesand scripts of ancient Cyprus, Cypriotarchaeology (by Vassos Karagiorgis) andthe unforgettable Fayoum portraits ofancient Egypt (by Euphrosyne Doxiadis),to name only a few.

Our literary events are always wellattended, whether they take the form of conversations with writers such asAlki Zei and Panos Karnezis, booklaunches, lectures or poetry readings. The extraordinary variety of Greece’sflora and fauna was celebrated in theseries “Discover Greece and Cyprus,”organised with the Lykion tonHellinidon; the development of thehuman embryo was the subject of a lecture by the surgeon and fetalmedicine pioneer Professor KyprosNicolaides. In short, our guests havetouched on almost every aspect ofexperience, in the ancient Greektradition that puts humanity at thecentre of understanding: “Man is themeasure of all things.”

n order to take the spiritualtemperature of an individual orsociety, one must mark the music.”So said Plato; Hellenism without

music is inconceivable. From ancientlyric to Byzantine chant, from folk songto classical composition to dancerhythms of all kinds, the rafters of theHellenic Centre frequently ring with aneclectic mix of instruments and voices.Among the talents who have gracedour hall are the great folk musicianDomna Samiou, the singer-songwritersDionysis Savvopoulos and AlkinoosIoannides, the composer Mimis Plesasand the vocalist Nena Venetsanou, whoperformed a programme that spannedtwo thousand years.

Greek composers have made animportant contribution to contemporaryclassical music. In 2005 we celebratedthe work of Iannis Xenakis; in 1999 theNew Hellenic Quartet performed worksby Nikos Skalkottas on the fiftiethanniversary of his death. The tradition

of innovation continues in the work ofcomposers such as the young CypriotEvis Sammoutis, whose work wasperformed for us by the KreutzerQuartet. For a number of years we werefortunate to host the Hellenic ConcertSeries, sponsored by the Michael MarksCharitable Trust and the Bank of Cyprus(London) and featuring such ensemblesas the Chilingirian Quartet, the MediciQuartet and the Dorian Ensemble. Wehave enjoyed solo performances by fine musicians, such as the pianistChristodoulos Georgiades, and we havebeen especially proud to welcomeyoung classical musicians from Greeceand Cyprus in our Young Greek Mastersseries. One of the high points of ourmusical programming was a specialperformance of Donizetti’s operaCaterina Cornaro in the Queen ElizabethHall, organized by Lady Iro Hunt. In April 2008 we saw the return of MariosPapadopoulos with the OxfordPhilomusica to give a concert on what

would have been the seventiethbirthday of our great friend andsupporter, Constantinos Leventis.

Popular music from the country and the city is close to the hearts of Greekseverywhere. In 2004 we were treated to a rare evening of music played on the Pontic lyra by Matthaios andKonstantinos Tsahourides; in 2005 weheard a recital of songs by Attik, theAthenian songwriter of the thirties andforties whose work gave courage to somany during the war years. Our regularGreek evenings with live bands allowour members to participate fully in thepleasures of rhythm.

Because harmony knows no borders, we have also welcomed musicians fromJapan and South America; in 2008, amusical voyage through Greece, Brazil,Argentina, Portugal, Italy and Cyprustook us all on a sentimental journey.

Music leads inevitably to dance, and wehave enjoyed many fine performances

by the traditional dancers of the Lykionton Hellinidon, who also run regularworkshops. Our theatrical events haveincluded enthusiastic productions of J.B. Priestley’s “A Dangerous Corner” and“Byzantium, 00 AD” in cooperation withTheatre Lab as well as visits from otherLondon companies such as ETHOL and Nea Skini. In 2008 we were fortunateto host a lively solo performance of the Apology of Socrates, given in Greekand English, by the Emmy Award winnerYannis Simonides, as well as twoproductions by the University of CyprusTheatre Workshop, Leontios Macheras’“Annals of Cyprus” and “Erotocritos.”

Over the years we have screenednumerous documentaries about Greeceand Cyprus; in 2008 we were delightedto host the first London Greek FilmFestival, a four-day event with many UK premiers of films by Greek andCypriot directors and video workshopsby Video Poetica.

he Hellenic Centre’s year isthreaded through withcustoms that mark theseasons for Greeks

everywhere, celebrated with goodfood and enthusiasm. Our memberSocieties play a lively part in theseoccasions. Many invite their membershere to cut their Vasilopita, the NewYear cake that’s baked in honour of St. Basil. A priest is usually on hand tobless the cake, and everyone crowdsaround to see who’ll get the slice with the coin baked into it, and a year’s good luck. Around January 30th we celebrate the Orthodox Day of Learning, usually with a talk on achurch-related theme.

Spring brings the Carnival with dancesand masquerades—a time of freedomand enjoyment descended from anancient festival in honour of Dionysusand the world’s rebirth. There is always a Carnival party to which children—andadults too—can come in fancy dress.

In the second week of Carnival theSocieties celebrate Tsiknopempti, theThursday when meat is traditionallygrilled so that the smoke or “tsikna” fillsthe air, spreading news of the feast. Thethird week—Tyrini, orCheese Week, whenpeople can eat fish and dairy productsbut not meat—leads in to KatharaDeftera, or Clean Monday, the start of theforty-day Lent fast.

On Kathara Deftera Greeks head for the countryside to eat Lent food and fly their home-made kites, competing to see whose can go the highest.Unfortunately there’s not much spacefor kite flying in Marylebone, but there’salways a wonderful lunch prepared at the Centre on that day, with thetraditional Lent dishes of octopus, squid, shrimp, flat bread, olives, beans, taramosalata, salads and halvah, and live music and dancing.

After Lent comes Easter, which wecelebrate at one of our Bar Late

Opening Nights with hard boiled eggsdyed red to symbolize the redeemingblood of Christ. Before you eat your egg you have to crack it against yourfriends’ to see whose egg is toughest—and who is the luckiest. Koulouria andtsoureki—round biscuits and the sweet egg bread traditionally made forEaster—also make an appearance at theCentre; baking is one of the many skillsour members like to share.

Each year we also commemorate thenational days of Greece and Cyprus:25th March, October 1st and October28th. And throughout the seasons wehave evenings of live Greek music, dancing and food (of course), whenmembers and friends can come to relaxin the Greek way. Like our regular BarLate Opening Nights, these eveningskeep young people coming to theCentre, bringing new energy andnourishing the Greek part of their lives.

Christmas begins with the splendidbazaar held by the ladies of the Lykionton Hellinidon, an opportunity for someoriginal Christmas shopping. earning a language isperhaps the best way tounderstand another culture.

In 1999 we began offeringGreek lessons to a group of fifteenstudents; we now have more than 350 students from thirty-eight differentcountries, ranging in age from twenty to eighty. Many are professionals with a Greek spouse or partner or a holidayhome in Greece; others are Greeks orGreek Cypriots from the diaspora whowish to improve their conversationalskills or learn to read and write inGreek. The levels of tuition we offernow follow the Common EuropeanFramework of Reference forLanguages. We are very proud to beable to offer preparation for theCertificate of Attainment in ModernGreek, and currently supply many ofthe students who sit this exam. Lastsummer we introduced an end of yearexam for all our students, with its owncertificate from the Hellenic Centre.

Our students and teachers also benefitfrom an extensive specialist library and audiovisual materials.

Since 2006 our twelve regular teachershave been assessed by an externalevaluator and benefit from regulartraining seminars, supported by theGreek Ministry of Education, which are also open to other teachers of Greek as a second language. Theseseminars and assessments are theproduct of our close cooperation withDr Niovi Antonopoulou of the Centre for Greek Language, at the AristoteleionUniversity of Thessalononiki and theEuropean Centre for ModernLanguages, Council of Europe. In 2007 we were visited by ProfessorGeorge Babiniotis of Athens Universityand the Foundation for HellenicCulture, who held consultationsessions with our teachers.

he Hellenic Centre hasorganised a series of memorableexcursions for its members.

The first was a trip to Istanbul in 1993 with the historian and authorMarianna Koromila, which included anaudience with the Patriarch at the School of Chalki at which he kindly agreed to come and bless the newly acquiredHellenic Centre building. The following year we visited Cyprus with the excellentguide Titina Loizidou. In 1995 we touredWestern Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Vergina,Dion, Pella and Prespes with ArtemisPertsinidou, and in 1996 we travelled to Eastern Macedonia, Thrace and theOrthodox monasteries of Bulgaria. 1997found us in Sicily, and 1998 in New York for the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition“The Glory of Byzantium,” again enriched for us by the deep knowledge of MariannaKoromila. In subsequent years we visitedold Rome and the Holy Land. We continueto organise day trips to places of interest in the UK.

hildren have always been atthe heart of Greek life, andwe take particular pleasurein welcoming the youngest

visitors to the Hellenic Centre. As wellas regular events like the carnival fancydress party and the family Christmaslunch we organize all kinds of creativeworkshops and performances forchildren. In 1997, in association withTheatro Technis, we were privileged to host the great Karagiozis playerEvgenios Spatharis with his shadowpuppet theatre.

Puppets have also played a starring rolein a series of story-telling events by AriaSandis, including Curious Carla and theProblem of Knowledge, which gave our young intellectuals a guided tour of Greek philosophy, and the especiallypopular Pegasus and Mendius, whichended with the children making theirown Pegasus puppets.

To celebrate the Athens Olympiad weheld a three-day event, with a paintingcompetition for children, magicians andentertainers, face painting and a disco. That same year saw two inspirationalmusic workshops, one on classical musicfor students of the Greek schools inLondon with the cellist Christos Grimpasand the pianist Vicky Yannoula, and oneon Greek folk and popular music withthe group Plastic Chairs. It was a joy towatch 200 children from English andGreek primary schools, the HellenicCollege and the French Lycee, somewith special needs, singing and dancingtogether as they learned about Greekmusical traditions.

It is especially important to us to drawyoung people to the Centre, to helpthem take pleasure and pride in theGreek part of their lives and to ensurethe future of our community. Of course, our younger members are welcome atall our events; film and musical evenings

are especially popular. Needless to say, the atmosphere was electric at our screenings of the Eurovision SongContest and the European Football Cup on the occasions when Greecewon those competitions. In 2008 wehosted the first Greek Cultural Festival of Youth Arts in London, bringingtogether young artists and performersfrom the UK for a day of dance, songand theatre “in an atmosphere born out of the Dionysian spirit of music.” The Festival will be expanded in futureyears, and will become a regular featureof our programme.

ur light and airy red brickbuilding in the heart of Marylebone started life in the early 1900s as a

Swedish gymnastics college. Duringthe Great War of 1914-18, it saw service as the Swedish War Hospital for British Wounded.

A sensitive and elegant conversion hasmade it an ideal venue not only for theHellenic Centre’s many programmes, but for all kinds of business, professional, cultural and social events, from concertsto conferences and weddings to fashion shows.

Its centrepiece is the extraordinary high-ceilinged Great Hall, which canaccommodate up to 200 guests. This galleried white-walled space allows great creative flexibility for bothprofessional and personal celebrations.Over the years we have seen ittransformed from a fairy-tale garden to a winter wonderland, complete with

snow and living Christmas trees. In addition we have a wide range of more intimate meeting and exhibitionrooms, including the Friends’ Room, the Boardroom and the Library. Clientswho have used our facilities include the BBC, the NHS, Marks & Spencer,PricewaterhouseCoopers, Boots, L’Orealand many more, who return time andtime again.

Our bright and cosy downstairs bar isoften open for an intimate evening oflive Greece music, drinks and snacks.

The Library houses an extensivecollection of books on the history, geography and literature of Greece and Cyprus. We have a particularly good selection of works on Greece in the Second World War, generouslydonated by Costas N. Hadjipateras and Maria Fafalios-Dragonas. It is openby appointment to members and other researchers.
