In 2011 the movie “Courageous” came out, it was directed byAlex Kendrick. e movie was about four police officers begin-ning to question their faith and their abilities as fathers. In onescene another father named Martinez, was struggling to keep adecent job. He would get a job but for whatever reason it wouldnot last and he would find himself un-employed again. Martinezhad a wife and two children who were depending on him. Fi-nally, one day, Martinez got a job, a good job, and he was de-termined to keep it. Soon while on this new job he was calledinto the Managers office.

To Martinez’s surprise the Manager asked if he would be will-ing to falsify information on the number of crates he would re-ceive each day. Martinez was so desperate to keep this job andyet he knew his Manager was asking him to lie.

Martinez was faced with a difficult decision should he lie tokeep this job? Refuse to lie and lose his job? What differencewould a little lie make and who would know? e thought ofbeing un-employed again was more than he could bear. eManager gave him until the next morning to make his decision.

at night at home, discussing the matter with his wife wasvery difficult. e wife cried and begged Martinez to see thatwhat the Manager was asking was really a form of obedience andthat he should do what he has been told to do. She kept saying“I don’t want to go back to our financial struggle again”. Mar-tinez repeated over and over to his wife “but the Manager is ask-ing me to lie”. To those reading this article what would you do given these cir-cumstances?

e following morning Martinez walked into the Manager’soffice, and the Manager asked for his decision. Martinez held hishead down and said “I am grateful for this job, but it would bewrong for me as a Christian to lie about the number of crates”.“It would be wrong to God, and to my own conscience”. eManager said, “so, is that your answer”? Martinez, with his headeven lower said “yes”.

e Manager stood up and said “may I shake your hand youngman, you just gave me the right answer”. Martinez looked upstartled, the Manager went on to say, “I need somebody I cantrust, will you take the job”? “We will even adjust your pay”.Martinez said “I would be honored”. e Manage said “the jobis yours”. As Martinez left the office the manager said “anksfor your integrity, its rare”.

Identity Crisisby Delores J. Sanan

Geraldine Dunklin was an awesome woman of God. She walked into mylife by virtue of teaching our women’s bible study group, but exited my life as“Ma” and “Grandma Geri.” We often marveled about the way our relationship

blossomed over the years. I recall telling her my reason for initially distancingmyself from her was because I thought she had that “God-eye,” and I was afraidshe could see the inner me that I didn’t want anyone to see. She laughed thatGeraldine Dunklin laugh and said, “But Dee that inner you is beautiful andneeds to be shared.” us began the journey of her teaching and nurturing meto be the woman of God I was designed to be.I was not the easiest to nurture. By the time she came into my life, I was angryand bitter with very low self-esteem. Whenever she would suggest I do some-

thing, I would rattle off a list of reasons why I couldnot. Most often, she would listen quietly or just say“okay.” I suspect those were the days she would askGod, “What have I gotten into?” en there werethose moments when she let loose on me with bothbarrels. No sugar coating, no poor wounded soul. One of those moments came when I shared my iden-tity crisis. I remembered saying, I don’t know who Iam. My mother died when I was young, and I didn’treally know my dad. I did not provoke the sympathyone might expect to follow such a statement. Instead, she pushed to the edge of seat, looked me in the eyesand said, you might not know who you are, but doyou know who’s you are?” For me, that was a defin-ing moment, as she walked me through the word ofGod, ending my identity crisis. It all starts with knowing that God created each oneof us in His image (Genesis 1:27), with a plan and apurpose for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11). In the processof learning “Who’s I am,” we are not only created inHis image, we must also remember, “For we are hisworkmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto goodworks, which God hath before ordained that weshould walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). As such, thetime comes when we must let go of the identity crisisissues, understanding that in Jesus Christ, we are newcreatures (2 Corinthian 5:17).

Life is not a race, but indeed a journey. Be honest. Work Hard.Be choosy. Say “thank you”, “I love you”, and “great job” to someoneeach day. Go to church, take time for prayer. The Lord giveth andthe Lord taketh. Let your handshake mean more than pen andpaper.

It allows you to become that which you aspire to be. Laughoften. Appreciate the little things in life and enjoy them. Some of thebest things realy are free.

Do not worry, less wrinkles are more becoming. Forgive, itfrees the soul. Take time for yourself – plan for longevity. Recognizethe special people you’ve been blessed to know. Live for today, enjoythe moment.
