MEDIA MINISTRY
We want to thank each of our patrons for coming by the Media Library and checking out the different
kinds of media we have to offer you. During the past few months we have seen an increase in Bible
study kits checked out for individual and small group use. Also, many DVDs have been checked out with
patrons excited to have an alternative to watching all non-Christian shows on TV. With the many new
books purchased and received from our generous patrons, we have many of the newer books by your
favorite authors.
Many of you ask for recommendations when you come in so I will first give you a list of our patrons’ favorite
authors. Just about any of the books written by these authors are very good reads. The most read non-fiction au-
thors are John Eldredge, Billy Graham, Anne Graham Lotz, Max Lucado, Beth Moore, John Piper and Charles Stan-
ley. Popular fiction authors include Terrie Blackstock, Ted Dekker, Karen Kingsbury, Tim LaHaye, Beverly Lewis,
Gilbert Morris, Tracie Peterson, Francine Rivers, Joel C. Rosenberg, Robert Whitlow, and Lori Wick.
I would like to introduce you to some authors and books that you may not be familiar with.
Elizabeth George—Women around the world are drawn to Elizabeth's approach of daily starting with the
Bible to handle life’s challenges. Her ability to weave Biblical truth into everyday issues has led readers
to make 15 of her books best sellers. You might want to check out A Woman’s Call to Prayer, Loving God
With All Your Heart, and A Woman’s Walk With God.
Bill Hybels is the bestselling author of more than twenty books, including Becoming a Contagious Christian
and Too Busy Not to Pray. Hybels is known worldwide as an expert in training Christian leaders to
transform individuals and their communities through the local church.
John Ortberg’s teaching centers around how faith in Christ can impact our everyday lives. A good book to
check out by Ortberg is If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat.
Lynn Austin has two passions that have served her well in the writing of her historical novels. She is win-
ner of numerous awards for novels dealing with women and their place during World War II. Her most
recent works are biblical in nature: The Restoration Chronicles series which include Return to Me and
Keepers of the Covenant and Ref iner’s Fire series which include Candle in the Darkness and Fire By Night.
Each of these series have a third and final book due out later this year.
Davis Bunn said he started writing when he was 38 years old and two weeks after he accepted Christ as his
personal Savior. However, it was nine years and seven books later that his first books was accepted for
publication. He won the Christy Award for his Book of Hours. Other books here for you to check out in-
clude The Reluctant Prophet, The Patmos Deception and Unlimited.
Jan Watson won the 6448 Christian Writers Guild Operation First Novel contest for her f irst novel, Trouble-
some Creek. She followed this novel with Torrent Falls and Willow Springs. One of our patrons made
the comment “I just fell in love with the characters in this series and I could not stop until I read the last
book.”
We hope you will come by and CHECK OUT THESE BOOKS AND OTHER MEDIA!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
JUNE 22-26 Journey Off the Map is almost here. We need your prayers and support to provide a successful experi-ence for this week. Our theme verse is Isaiah 30:21, which says, “And whenever you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear this com-mand behind you: ‘This is the way, walk in it.’ We ask that you take this journey with us by praying for our VBS staff and the children who will be attending.
Registration slips are available at the Welcome Center, you can call the church office to pre-register, or go online and pre-register at balboabaptist.church/#/ministries/vbs-registration. We also need your support with cookies (put in the freezer and label with or without nuts and VBS), large bags of potato chips and lemon-ade mix that our snack team will need that week. We also need rolls of ribbon (any width), colorful card stock, and empty 32 oz. coffee cream-er containers. Again, we appreciate all the support and prayers you have sent our way.
WELCOME OUR NEW MEMBERS
BRUCE AND WHANDA SWIHART
Oh Wow, what a pleasure to introduce to you a couple who have served
the Lord for so many years! Let’s begin with Bruce who grew up in
South Bend, IN. He became a Christian at age 13 and was called to the
ministry at 15. He began serving his home church as music director
during his last two years of high school. Acknowledging his call to the
ministry, he enrolled in Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO…..there
he met his best friend and confidant of 60 years, Whanda. AN ASIDE:
While attending BBC, Bruce hitchhiked (every week!) from Springfield,
MO to Springdale, AR—approx. 100 miles—serving as music director at
a local church service!! After graduation, he accepted the call to a church in Houston, TX as the asso-
ciate pastor and music director. Still pursuing a music degree, he attended the Univ. of Houston, and
then transferred to UT/Austin. He not only earned his music degree at UT, but also became a South-
ern Baptist. He later attended SWBT Seminary in Ft. Worth to pursue a master's degree in music. Af-
ter several years as music minister in Texas churches, he was called to the pastoral ministry. Back
they go to Ft. Worth where he obtained a MDiv. During this time, he also earned his DMin. His very
first pastorate was at First Baptist/Glenwood where a young Denny Wright was Children's Church
and Bus Ministry Pastor! Bruce pastored churches in Texas and Arkansas before moving to Little
Rock to work with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention (ABSC). He led the Leadership and Worship
Team, which included Intentional Interim Ministry training, serving churches throughout AR. Pastor
Denny also served with him at the ABSC. After retiring from the state convention, Bruce and Whanda
moved to the village where they attended, and then Bruce served as pastor of our sister church, Bar-
celona Road. This man of God, along with his help-mate, has served sixty years in active ministry for
our Lord and Savior!!!
So little has been said about Whanda! She certainly has not just sat around eating bon bons! She
waited until their children were in school before attending college. She earned her BSEd from UT/
Austin (hook-um-horns!). She taught high school Social Studies in several schools in Texas. One high-
light: She and several teachers were awarded a Fulbright group grant to study in India, and were for-
tunate to spend an afternoon in the home of Mrs. Ghandi. They spent their summer in classes and
traveling. Naturally, her duties as a pastor’s wife encompassed several active roles which I’m sure she
performed with aplomb. While Bruce was at the ABSC, she led prayer conferences for the Leadership
Team across the state. She was a consultant/speaker for the Southern Baptist Convention for pas-
tor’s wives during conferences for pastors and wives in several states. She likes to read and exercise,
and once enjoyed quilting, but because of joint problems in her hands, she can no longer enjoy that
endeavor.
Bruce and Whanda have two children. Their son Tim lives and teaches in Thailand, after serving
20 years as an SBC missionary. His 3 adult children live and work in Texas. His sons Brett and Bryce
graduated from Ouachita Baptist and his daughter Brittany graduated from Texas A&M. Their daugh-
ter Angela lives in Houston where she is an emergency room nurse in the Houston Medical Center.
She has 2 adult sons. Jordan attends college in Houston after serving in the US Army in Iraq and Af-
ghanistan. Cody graduated from Ouachita Baptist and now lives and works in Louisville, Kentucky.
Bruce and Whanda attend the Impact SS class taught by Dr. Polly Brown. Naturally, Pastor Denny
and Billie Sue welcome them and look forward to serving with them again, and we look forward to
getting to know them better.
