Students in grades 35 had a blast on 17 different field day stations this year, while K2 enjoyed 14 stations. Stations included classics like leaky pipe, tugowar, and capture the football and new stations like tic tac toe relay, spaghetti and meatballs, continuous kickball, and treasure hunt tag. When asked what she most looks forward to about field day, Ms. Schmidt, our P.E. teacher said, “I really enjoy getting to see the students being outside, being physically active, and having fun with their classmates.” Below are student reflections about field day this year: Mason, kindergartener, said his favorite field day activity was, “Mosquito tag because you get tagged and sprayed in the face by water.” Riley, 1st grader, said her favorite field day activity was relay race because she won the most. Field Day Fun By: Samantha Filburn, Lucas Phillips Field day. The day when kids get to run and play fun games and get wet. Schmidt, our P.E. teacher said, “I really enjoy getting to see the students being outside, being physically active, and having fun with their classmates.” Below are student reflections about field day this year:

5 Tips for Surviving Middle School By: Megan Braun Ok 5th graders… here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you stay on top of it all next year! 1. Organize, Organize, Organize! Keeping organized is very important with seven classes and a locker. Color coding your binders and textbooks is a time saver that can be very useful. Utilize your agenda so you can stay on top of homework and longterm projects. Also, take the extra few seconds to put papers in their proper place… don’t just stuff them into your locker or bookbag! 2. Pay attention and take notes. Everything will seem to be going so fast, especially at first when everything is so new. Taking notes and paying attention will help you keep track of it all. 3. Keep track of time. You will have three minutes between classes so make sure you aren’t late. Keep talking between classes to a minimum! 4. Be you. Always be yourself and stay confident. It does you no good to second guess yourself! 5. Speak up. If someone is doing something that bothers you, tell them and if the problem continues, tell a teacher. Stay focused and organized but most of all have fun... middle school will be here soon! https://www.scholastic.com/kids/middleschoolsurvival/tips/

THE TEACHER FEATURE: An Interview with Ms. Weaver By: Megan Braun

What got you interested in teaching? I have a brother who has special needs and I saw what a big impact his teacher had on him and how hard he worked to help make him successful. It really inspired me. What college did you go to? Kings College, PA What is your favorite subject to teach and why? Math is my favorite subject to teach because I love all of the "real world" applications that we can make! Math was difficult for me as an elementary student. Now that I am a teacher, I love teaching different strategies, so kids can discover and apply the strategies that makes the most sense to them. What would your dream house be? Pretty small and probably years from now, something somewhere in Africa. What are your favorite hobbies or things to do? My favorite things to do include: working with people who are in need, traveling, and reading books that inspire me. Hiking and being outdoors is fun, too!

Girls on the Run! By: Addison Planz, guest writer Girls on the Run is an afterschool program at UES for girls. It teaches girls about being positive and kind and staying active. Girls on the Run is done in all fifty states now. At the end of the program, which is ten weeks, the girls run a 5k. Girls who participate make new friends and have fun playing running games.

Girls on the Run, UES Team

At UES, we have two sessions: one in the fall and one in the spring. We meet twice a week to work together and help each other. Coaches are nice and inspire the girls to do the best they can. Girls talk about what to do if they are angry. They know being mean and bullying is choosing not to be a girl on the run. Girls learn to be confident and not shy. Girls can jog or walk; they do not need to run laps. Students inspire and motivate one another, make each other laugh and have a good time running with each other. Through this experience, girls learn to believe in themselves and when it’s time for the 5k, they are ready. If you are a girl at UES who likes making new friends, being healthy and having some fun, check out Girls on the Run next year!
