Since its first studentsgraduated in 1877, HastingsHigh School, like every com-munity’s high school, hashelped discover potential, launch careers, and changelives. For the past severalweeks, the Reminder has vis-ited with past graduates toexplore why Hastings HighSchool has been so mean-ingful in their lives.
The first reality checkAdam Sheldon got when hearrived at Baldwin-WallaceUniversity near Clevelandwas the money he had to payan accompanist whenever hesang.
“Patti LaJoye would gowithout cost and play for meat all my solo and ensembleconcerts,” recalls Sheldon,24, of one of the most influ-ential teachers he had atHastings High School. “Igot to college and I had topay for an accompanist --and then they just play anddon’t coach? It was a bigeye opener.”
For a young man who’sworld blasted into a neworbit when he discoveredmusic as a middle schooler,Baldwin-Wallace was aneye opener itself. A smallliberal arts college in Berea,OH, just outside Cleveland,Baldwin Wallace is wellknown and respected for itsConservatory of Music, anacademic community withinthe university which encour-ages its students to crosstrain their musical gifts withother fields such as business
and education.Sheldon didn’t know it at
the time he rolled into townin August, 2006, but thechoice of Baldwin Wallace -- suggested by his counselorat Hastings High School --was a portent that dramati-cally formed and changedhis life.
“Every year, 120-130 stu-dents apply to theConservatory and 20 get in,”relates Sheldon. “When Iwas looking at colleges, Iwas looking at size becauseI didn’t want to be a number-- I never was in Hastings.Baldwin Wallace has about3,000 students and the cam-pus and the town are almostexactly like Hastings. Eventhe people are like the peo-ple in Hastings. I loved thatpiece of it.”
Though he’d already beenadmitted to anotherMichigan college, Sheldonknew on his BaldwinWallace visit where his nextstep needed to be taken. Heused the phone of a BaldwinWallace administrator tomake his call of decline tothe Michigan school.
From that day nearly sixyears ago, Sheldon has not
looked back -- and he creditshis Hastings education andthe Hastings communitywith making possible whatappears to be the beginningof a meteoric career.
Today, Sheldon is the pro-gram associate to the opera-tions and finance managerof the CommunityPartnership for Arts andCulture of GreaterCleveland. CPAC became aservice provider to the artsand cultural community in1997 when The ClevelandFoundation and The GeorgeGund Foundation commis-sioned a regional, communi-tywide strategic culturalplan to determine the needsand concerns of related non-profit organizations. Whenthe study was released in2000, CPAC became theconduit for implementationand evaluation of fundingand programs throughoutthe region.
Sheldon’s current work,in part, involves the granti-ng, the auditing, and the per-formance evaluation of 20artists and programs each ofwhom receive $20,000 fromCPAC’s $400,000 share of aCuyahoga County cigarettetax passed for arts and cul-ture programs in 2006.
“That’s about one-third ofmy job,” says Sheldon, “it’sthe financial piece of ourorganizational audit.Another one-third is meet-ing with artists who mayhave an idea on how to selltheir work and helping themdesign a business plan thatfits their need. The otherone-third is an educationalinitiative in which I may sitdown with an organizationthat serves kids to talk abouttheir needs, to construct abusiness plan, and to period-ically look at performanceevaluations to see if they arewhere they want to be.”
If it all sounds a bitadvanced from solo andensemble work and the
occasional Sundays that hestill uses his music inchurch, Sheldon hasBaldwin Wallace andHastings High School tothank for that, too.
“I was heavily involved inmusic for four years in highschool,” says Sheldon, “butmy side interest was withTracy George and theBusiness Professionals ofAmerica. I learned presen-tation skills and I went tonationals twice -- once inFlorida and once inCalifornia -- to compete inthe national finals. As Ientered my senior year atBaldwin Wallace, I wasinterested in starting anadventure and there was nobetter avenue for it than amaster’s degree program.”
One problem to starting amaster’s program arose:Sheldon was still an under-graduate still to complete hissenior year.
“It started first with a lotof chatting with a lot ofadvisors,” Sheldon chuck-les. “They were concernedabout my ability and whatbackground in I had in busi-ness. That’s when I replied,‘Let me tell you about whatI did in high school.’”
Sheldon was immediatelyadmitted to a master’sdegree program while com-pleting his senior yearcoursework due as much, perhaps, to the project heproposed for his master’sdegree thesis as the fact thathis high school had providedan ideal preparation for theadventure on which he wasabout to embark.
Drawing on his earlierhopes to be a music teacherand to the concerns that heand most of his fellow musicstudents had with curricu-lum emphases moving awayfrom the arts and closer tomore intensive work in sci-ence, technology, engineer-ing, and mathematics,Sheldon proposed workingwith curriculum specialiststo explore the connectionbetween music andimproved reading skills.
Heading a team of 12
undergraduate students,Sheldon launched a programwith 62 underprivileged sec-ond- and third-grade stu-dents in the Akron PublicSchools in which music wasconnected to readinginstruction. After one year, reading fluency increased by12%. Suspecting that musi-cal rhythm could be a spe-cific effect, Sheldon and theteam customized theapproach for a second yearand recorded a 17%improvement in reading flu-ency.
The results have pushedSheldon to national renown. He recently returned from aconference in Baltimorewhere he presented his find-ings to a national musicteachers conference. Twoweeks ago, he was workingwith college textbookauthors in Washington, D.C.to integrate his experiencefor future music educators. He’ll be travelling to similarconferences in Chattanooga,TN and Ohio and will bepresenting at a music thera-py conference in Chicago inOctober.
Today, the project hebegan continues with whathe describes as a “powerfulgroup” of undergraduateswho write grants and imple-ment the program for whichhe now acts as an advisor. He also recently finished themaster’s degree program inentrepreneurship and humanresources.
“It all goes back to beingsuccessful in middle schooland high school and havingthe support I had around mewhen I was at Hastings HighSchool,” says Sheldon, wholaughs when asked if he wasa high-performing highschool student.
“I was not the best highschool student,” he con-tends, “in fact, I was awful.I think Patti knew the reasonI didn’t do well was becauseI was involved so much inwhat I really enjoyed, themusic and BPA.
“That all changed when Igot to college because Iknew I had to step up my
game to be successful. ButBaldwin Wallace was amaz-ing because, after highschool, it became the placewhere I could focus on thosethings I loved the most. Iremember thinking as afreshman that now I get todo my passion for fouryears. When I graduated, Iwas in the Top 20.”
Everyday, when he looksback, Sheldon knows how itall happened.
“I think it was the devo-tion of those teachers totheir students,” he assesses, also including middle schoolchoir director Karen Schoenwho “got me started” in theworld of music. “Thoseteachers were able to wit-ness and to recognize and toeven nourish interest andpassion and talent. WhatI’ve been able to accomplishis a testament to them.
“Patti offered me oppor-tunities, she’d stay afterschool to work on musicwith me and, if I wanted totalk to her about musicschools and where I wasgoing, she always had thetime.”
The joy for those teacherstoday, certainly, is knowingthat Sheldon is returningthose same considerations topeople in his life today --including the second andthird graders of Akron,Ohio.
There’s also advice he’shappy to share with currentHastings High School stu-dents.
“Don’t forget yourextracurriculars,” Sheldonintones. “Although the coreacademic program was afantastic experience, it allcame down for me to theextracurricular activities inwhich I was involved. It gotme the job I have today andthey still keep me motivat-ed.”
Good news for students, for teachers, and for arts andcultural leaders all overCleveland and the world.
Also a heartwarming notefor Hastings, Michigan.
