MONTHLY PUBLICATION
THE HARBINGER November/December, 2013
Volume 1, Issue 3 A Note from Mr. Ken Chaffin, Principal Dear Bobcat Family: As Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of how much we have to be thankful for at Grandview Heights High School. Our students continue to learn and grow, and exhibit fine citizenship qualities. We are proud of their spirit and talent, accomplishments and generosity, and service to the community. What a strong school community we have and how fortunate we are to be able to work together to positively impact the lives of our students! The November/December Harbinger will look forward to many wonderful events: The fall play, kick-off to winter sports, holiday concerts and of course Winter Break! Please take a moment to review/retain important dates and events. As the new-year approaches my hope for each of you is that you have time to relax and reflect. Given the nature of our demanding world, budgeting time is becoming increasingly difficult. I hope everyone has a chance to take some time for themselves and their family. That is a precious gift for the season. Thank you for all your support and I wish each family a wonderful holiday season and Happy New Year! BTBB, Ken Chaffin GHHS Principal

Dear Senior Parent, Hello from the 2014 GHHS Yearbook staff! This letter is regarding senior materials for the yearbook. We know the senior year can be pretty hectic, so we wanted to make sure everyone knows what is coming up. We will send out order forms with more specific instructions in early November. This letter is to simply make you aware of certain deadlines and basic information so you can plan ahead. First – Senior pictures - due January 31st. Pictures should be head-‐and-‐shoulders shots and will be printed in color. If you have your pictures taken through a professional photographer, ask them if they are sending the pictures to us or if you need to; not all photographers automatically send pictures in. Also, if you do not plan to have pictures taken, we can accept any good, recent picture of your Senior, in any size up to 8”x10”. Additionally, we can arrange a free portrait session for your senior if needed, please contact Mrs. Kelsey at [email protected] Second – Baby pictures - due January 31st. These can be any pictures of your senior before they started school, and will be printed in color. Third – Senior Dedications - due March 30th These are ads placed by parents to congratulate their students on their hard work, to celebrate their achievements, and to wish them well in the future. Dedications can be bought as full pages, for $110, half-‐pages, for $60, and quarter-‐pages for $30. You can design your ad yourself or have our staff design it for you. Senior dedications will be printed in color. Fourth – ordering yearbooks – the Early Bird deadline for ordering yearbooks at the reduced rate of $50.00 is February 28th. The deadline for orders at the regular rate of $55.00 is April 4th. Fifth – name, activity, and quote forms – these are for students to specify their preferred name for next to their senior picture in the yearbook, for students to list their activities and accomplishments during high school, and to list a quote they would like beside their picture in the yearbook. They are due along with senior pictures on January 31st. All materials submitted can be picked up in the high school office after May 16th. Please make sure to write your senior’s name on the back of all pictures submitted. Please address any questions or concerns you may have to the yearbook advisor Mrs. Kelsey, at [email protected] Thank you, The 2014 GHHS Yearbook Staff

GHHS INDUSTIAL TECHOLOGY CLASSROOM By ALAN FROMAN , TriVillage News Brad Gintert just can't help himself. "I come to class each day with a smile on my face," Grandview Heights High School's industrial technology teacher said. The grin is there because he and his students have a lot of new equipment to use and learn from thanks to a donation from a Grandview alum, who wishes to remain anonymous. The donation of about $200,000 paid for the purchase of computers, a 3D printer and a computer numerical-controlled router as well as improvements to the IT classroom itself, "It was an incredibly generous donation," Gintert said. "The kids are excited about the new equipment, and so am I. "It is unusual for a school to have a 3D printer, he said. "It's such a cool new technology," Gintert said. "It's great for rapid prototyping so kids get to see what they design. They can see it, handle it and feel it. The students do all their design work on computers," he said. The purchase of 10 robotics kits allowed the school to create a new robotics class, Gintert said. Whether they are involved in woodworking, robotics or design work, his students are learning about the engineering process, Gintert said. "It's just really exciting," he said. "We're already coming up with new and interesting things we can do with this new technology."
