What better place to be enveloped by the gorgeous mood of fall than the East End of Long Island? Autumn and winter in the Hamptons are special times of year here, perfect for taking walks along tranquil beaches, exploring storied towns, dining, and shopping, or simply contemplating the foliage as it changes color. Invigorating ocean breezes, acres of woods, historic houses, and culture aplenty…the Hamptons truly have it all. Those seeking a magical destination for their nuptials will quickly understand why so many have flocked here for their own big day. Follow their footsteps, or create your own — the choice is yours — as you embark on the beginning of the rest of your life.

MORE@ WELLWED.COM Keep up to date with everything hamptons at wellwed.com. *follow us on twitter:WELLWED

here’s a recent trend in the wedding industry to

go back to basics, to make weddings less big-scale

productions and more personal, heartfelt celebrations

of love and family.

For us here at WellWed though, this trend is nothing new. Focusing on the intimate, personal, and individual has been our mantra since day one, and we’ve made it our goal to bring you the very best of all things wedding-related in the place where you’ll be spending one of the most magical days of your life.

And that’s what makes us different – within these pages you’ll find a lot of heart and soul, not only from us but also from the amazingly talented wedding community that exists here in the Hamptons. It’s why I can say honestly that every single issue we create is my favorite – and this one is no exception. I love this issue!

For example, we worked with internationally acclaimed floral and event designer Ariella Chezar on “Vintage Finds” (page 143) to create beautiful and practical ways to integrate vintage pieces and found objects into your wedding décor, for a look that’s completely one-of-a-kind. And we created new wedding-color palettes (page 79), ranging from the whimsical to the extravagant, that brides tell us are all inspiring. That’s what we do at WellWed: discover the most exciting ideas, both traditional and innovative, for unique weddings.

There’s something inherently romantic about fall and winter – they’re seasons when things slow down a bit, when you might feel like the only bride in the world instead of another in a long line of summer wedding weekends. So soak in the season. Light a fire. Eat something that’s been cooking since morning. Flaunt your favorite color like an autumn forest. With this, our first fall/winter issue of WellWed - the Hamptons, I hope we inspire you to revel in the seasonal possibilities. Consider this our take on “tidings of comfort and joy” – I think you’ll find this issue packed with plenty of both.

WITH 16 YEARS OF ExPERIEncE unDER HIS

apron, Peter Ambrose, chef and owner of Food for Forks catering in Wainscott, new York, knows what it takes to produce exceptional cuisine. The self-made chef learned the ropes working for his father, a schoolteacher who ran a summertime clambake business. Steaming clams over an open fire lit a spark in the youthful Ambrose: catering was one way to leave behind the shackles of a traditional 9-to-5 job while allowing him to expand his culinary chops. His infectious enthusiasm and roll-up-your-sleeves-and-make-it-happen attitude are the keys to his success. “Being self-taught

has had its advantages,” Ambrose explains. “[I’m] always open to the ideas and skills of anyone who has worked for me, from my kitchen staff from all around the world to the guy washing dishes who makes a mean chimichurri sauce.”

This is what is so refreshing about Food for Forks. In addit ion to ser ving up incomparable fare, Ambrose truly listens to his clients and uses every tool in his impressive culinary arsenal to meet their needs; from a rustic BBQ to an elegant plated dinner for 200, he has them covered. The chef/owner simply states, “Our way is

Our wedding albumWe love Wedding photos—and lucky for us, here at WellWed magazine we get to see lots of them. Sent to us by photographers, brides and grooms, friends and families, these posed shots and candid snaps document memorable moments from another wedding season gone by. In this space, we like to share some

of our favorites with readers. Among these photos from last fall and winter’s weddings are ones that tell a great story, capture a wonderful mood, or just make us laugh. We hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do. And, who knows, maybe the next issue we’ll see your photos here!

Erin thayer waS SkePtical about the idea of meeting mr. right at a wedding, but then a seating chart foul-up landed her at a table of strangers, including ted dickson. after a few awkward moments, erin and ted hit it off and spent the rest of the evening together. the attraction was instant, and 24 hours after they said goodbye at the wedding, they were chatting on the phone — erin from her new york city apartment and ted from his home in baltimore. a year and a half later, they’d clocked hundreds of hours of phone time, hundreds of e-mail messages, and plenty of train time before erin made the move to baltimore. ted was determined to get erin’s father’s blessing before popping the question, but getting time with erin’s busy dad proved tougher than he’d expected. at a clambake celebrating erin’s grandparents’ 60th anniversary, ted saw his chance and seized the moment. fortunately for him, his intended was completely oblivious to his machinations: erin actually interrupted ted’s conversation with her dad without realizing what the two of them were talking about. So erin suspected nothing when ted suggested they take a late-night walk down to gibson beach, something they did frequently when visiting erin’s parents in Sagaponack. they were watching the ocean together when ted asked erin to stand up. She did, bemused, while he dropped to one knee and slid a ring onto her finger. there was much laughing, crying, and jumping up and down before they headed back to erin’s parents’ house to celebrate with her family.

choosing a wedding location was easy for erin and ted, who had spent many happy times on the Sagaponack beach. for erin, who’d grown up in the hamptons, a wedding at home felt exactly right. ted and erin wanted to share their favorite place with friends and family and opted for a September celebration that would let them enjoy the gorgeous hamptons’ scenery without the hordes of summertime tourists. erin’s parents volunteered their backyard for the reception, and everything else fell into place beautifully. inspired by the crisp blue September sky and early autumn sunflowers, daisies, and chamomile, erin chose a palette of navy blue brightened with white and yellow accents. erin’s mom designed and made white even wove personalized nantucket baskets for each of erin’s nine bridesmaids.

SPecial touch: Erin’s mom made Nantucket baskets for the bridesmaids & Ted’s mom did the calligraphy on the escort cards.

ted’s mom did the calligraphy for the escort cards. the other vendors, many of whom were longtime thayer family friends, made the wedding planning easy. ted’s friend from his hometown in alaska, the reverend norman h.v. elliot, ventured down to the “lower 48” to perform the

ceremony at the same church where erin’s parents were married 37 years before. the day was exactly what erin and ted wanted: an intimate, welcoming celebration of family and friends. at the reception inside the tent on the lawn, guests found their tables named for the various beaches and bays erin and ted had visited together in alaska and the hamptons, including a special lake erie table for the couple whose Pennsylvania wedding had been the occasion for erin and ted’s serendipitous meeting. the wedding celebration lasted late into the night, with the bride and groom dancing together with their families, friends, and neighbors. at one point, erin looked around the crowded dance floor and, seeing their friends and family of all ages dancing together, felt joyfully overwhelmed with all the love and support. “of course, i was also glad they were all having a great time!” says.

Friends insisted that elizabeth brooks had to meet

Andrew Parks —shouldn’t Texans transplanted to New York City stick together? And sure enough, when Elizabeth and Andrew met one summer in the Hamptons, they clicked. Andrew asked a friend for more details about Elizabeth and announced his plans to ask her out immediately after the party, but it took him almost three weeks to actually invite her to join him for dinner at a restaurant near her Upper West Side apartment. Dinner turned into drinks, and Andrew quickly pinned down Elizabeth for a date the next weekend — and the next, and the next. By the time summer ended they were inseparable, and on a Labor Day weekend in the Hamptons, they strolled along the beach confessing the depth of their feelings for one another. “We knew from that moment we were going to be married,” says Elizabeth.

Still, Elizabeth was surprised when Andrew proposed just five months after their first meeting. They’d gotten together for a pre-holiday gift exchange to celebrate Christmas as a couple before Elizabeth flew home to her family in Houston, and she was thrilled when Andrew handed her an enormous box as her final present. Inside the box was a smaller box, then another, smaller one, and after opening the seventh — a tiny ring box — Elizabeth saw that it was empty. She looked up to find Andrew on one knee in front of her, a gorgeous ring in his hand. He swept her away to dinner at the Joël Robuchon restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel, where Elizabeth’s sister and brother-in-law surprised her with a champagne celebration, followed by a delectable seven-course dinner for the couple. Later, Elizabeth discovered that the proposal had been touch and go: Her ring had to be flown in from Dallas, with Elizabeth’s sister rushing to New York’s LaGuardia Airport to pick it up the afternoon before the proposal.

The couple had met in the Hamptons and loved spending time there, so it seemed like a natural location for their September wedding. “We knew that we wanted to be married in a place that meant a lot to us, and the Hamptons are so beautiful,” Elizabeth says. Elizabeth chose a palette of autumnal colors — warm

deep purple, intense blue, and rich green — and let her bridesmaids choose their own dresses in those colors. Because their faith is important to them both, Elizabeth and Andrew decided to have their wedding at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton before the nearby reception. Along with her bouquet, Elizabeth carried a small Bible that her grandmother, mother, and sister had carried on their wedding days. She also carried a handkerchief from her paternal grandmother that her sister had carried for her wedding, too.

ALONG WITH HER BOUqUET, ELIzABETH CARRIED A SmALL BIBLE THAT HER GRANDmOTHER, mOTHER, AND SISTER HAD ALSO CARRIED ON THEIR WEDDING DAYS.

Instead of a soloist, Elizabeth and Andrew had a pianist play Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” one of Elizabeth’s favorite pieces. They also chose two prayers that had personal significance: the prayer

of St. Francis of Assisi, which Elizabeth had said every day while attending Episcopal school, and chapter 13 of First Corinthians, which had been the prayer of Elizabeth’s Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

At the reception, guests made themselves comfortable at tables named for Elizabeth and Andrew’s favorite restaurants from their dating days, decorated with plates and glasses chosen for their seaside feel. Elizabeth’s florist, Claire Bean, pulled wildflowers and greenery from the beach to bring a little of the natural setting into the flower arrangements.

Elizabeth wanted the celebration to be one big dance party, and she got her wish. The guests, including Elizabeth’s 98-year-old grandfather, who’d flown in from Houston to join the celebration, stayed until the very end, enjoying the delicious food and great music. Even the weather cooperated, giving the two former Texans a perfect autumn evening for their first night of married life.

There aren’t many places less romantic than the

departure terminal at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, but that’s where Karen Yau and Scott Smith met. They were on a recruiting trip for the same company, and Karen definitely caught Scott’s eye. After they returned to New York, Scott kept dropping by Karen’s floor to ask her out for lunch and coffee dates.

But it wasn’t until almost two years later, visiting Hong Kong on separate business trips, that things really clicked. One balmy evening, they went out for champagne and ended up dancing till dawn. Being more than 9,000 miles away from their lives in New York made them more uninhibited, but almost as soon as their planes touched down back home, Scott told Karen he was falling in love with her. The feeling was mutual.

One perfect day in April, Karen went into the garden to see why Scott was taking so long clearing out the flower bed, since he’d promised to take her out to brunch as soon as he was done. As she came to his side, he dropped to one knee and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. Karen, who knew without a doubt they belonged together, beamed and said, “Of course.”

“Scott was so nervous, he didn’t even put the ring on me,” Karen says. “I had to hold my hand out so he would know what to do.” The late brunch turned into a joyous champagne celebration.

Karen and Scott love the quiet beauty and uniqueness of the Hamptons, so it was a logical setting for their wedding.

“We very much wanted to avoid the cookie-cutter hotel wedding in the city,” says Karen. They were drawn to the beautiful beaches, rustic farm stands, and colonial churches, as well as the air of warm tranquility that pervades the area.

For Karen, a classically trained pianist and violinist who holds a degree in classical composition, the music for the ceremony was clearly a key element of the wedding, and she had a wonderful time choosing Rachmaninoff for the prelude and recessional, Delibes for the bridesmaids’ walk, and Puccini’s “O mio Babbino Caro” for

her own walk down the aisle. The music, performed by a soprano accompanied by a string quartet, reverberated through the church. In turn, Scott took over planning music for the reception, where he intended to keep the dance floor hopping.

“We dIdn’T knoW IT, buT We dIScovered ThaT peacockS SymbolIze endleSS love and fIdelITy, WhIch made uS even more SmITTen WITh The deSIgn,” SayS karen.

karen and Scott also wanted to use peacock feathers wherever they could: engraved in the antique chinoiserie wallpaper motif of their invitations, spilling extravagantly from an arrangement in the foyer, and carefully positioned on the plates of all the female guests. “We didn’t know it, but we discovered that peacocks symbolize endless love and fidelity, which made us even more smitten with the design,” says karen.

The reception glowed with the silver and gray palette borrowed from karen and Scott’s bedroom. against the oak-paneled walls of the Stanford White–built room, the floating candles, silvered branches, lush white flowers, and dripping moss shimmered like a gilded age dream. Walking into the room, karen and Scott had to catch their breath at the loveliness of it all.

“It was all very romantic and decadent and seemed like a scene right out of an edith Wharton novel,” says karen.

karen and Scott helped their guests make room for the bistro-inspired five-course dinner by having a round of dancing between each course. There was plenty of food, including a sophisticated riff on the egg mcmuffin made with quail eggs, wild boar bacon, and truffles that karen and Scott’s friends still talk about today. The dancing (and the extra heaters) also helped keep their guests warm on the coldest day of the year.
