On the 2nd Saturday of each month, we hold a hands-on event for families with children ages 5-12.for Families

Activities include art projects, interactive programs and Museum wide events. Reservations are not required, but seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Each year the Museum invites an artist, art group or school to create an ofrenda that celebrates the memory of the departed in the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Tiered altars are decorated with handmade flowers, images and objects.

Oakland-born, Modesto-based, full-time tattoo artist Paco Garcia will create this year’s community ofrenda. Garcia’s boldly graphic work earned him a coveted position as the poster artist for the Fruitvale Día de los Muertos celebration in 2013 and 2014. His work will also be seen at the Oakland Museum this October in their annual installation of Día de los Muertos ofrendas.

to celebrate the community tradition of Flor y Canto or “Flower and Song.” This event celebrates the beauty and richness of Mexican and indigenous culture through poetry, music and dance. The phrase “flor y canto” is a rough Spanish translation for what the Aztecs referred to as art and poetry - an apt comparison to the pleasure the arts bring into our lives. This year’s perfomers will present expressions from the traditional to the contemporary. Delicious pan dulce and hot chocolate will be served.

LIVE MUSIC Wendi Maxwell & Trés Hot Jazz

Thursday, November 5, 7:00 p.m. Wendi Maxwell and some of the best jazz musicians in the region, the "unstoppable" Trés Hot Jazz, once again bring their swinging bluesy style to the Haggin. Maxwell sets the tone with her throaty, sensual vocals in a range of songs new to the repertoire from composers as diverse as be-bop vocalist Bob Dorough and gravelly-voiced Tom Waits, as well as a taste of Maxwell's original compositions. The group is enjoying a banner year, with an extensive performance schedule, a third CD in the works, and a third consecutive nomination for a Modesto Area Music Award for blues/jazz.

Founding member of British folk rock band Fairport Convention, Iain Matthews brings music from his 20th (and final, he says) solo album, The Art of Obscurity, to the spotlight at the Haggin. Decades of touring has honed this global musician. Matthews writes “Music is in my blood. Music motivates me. Music is my mistress. I take inspiration from one of my musical heroes, Curtis Mayfield, who made

his final album, New World Order, lying flat on his back. Now that’s love and dedication…and I can still stand.”

Annual Meeting & Buffet Luncheon

Wednesday, October 14, 10:15 a.m. The Museum Store Auxiliary annual

luncheon will be held on Wednesday, October 14. All Museum Store Auxiliary members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Seating will be at 10:15 a.m., with an entertaining and thought provoking presentation by curator of education, Lisa Cooperman, at 10:30 a.m. A salad lunch will be served after the speaker, and the annual meeting will be held following the lunch. There is no charge to attend.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and Stockton Institute of Continued Learning (SICL) members, and the general public are invited to join Haggin Museum docents from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

You will be treated to a special docent-led tour in a comfortable and sociable group. Light refreshments will be served as you discover the pleasures of in-depth conversations about art, history and our community. Bring a friend! These presentations are included with the price of museum admission ($5.00 - $8.00) and are free for museum members. No registration necessary. First Fridays will break for the month of December. The serious squint of actor Jack Lord, best known for his role as TV detective Steve McGarrett on the original series Hawaii Five-0, has always exuded a mysterious power. Born John Joseph Patrick Ryan in 1920, Lord attended New York University on a football scholarship where he studied fine arts. He served in the U.S. Maritime Service and during deployment to Washington D.C., started acting in training films and launched a career in theater. That he looked like a ‘Greek god,’ according to stories of their courtship by fashion designer and second wife Marie, probably helped.

Lord brought Broadway acting chops to Hollywood after WWII, but it took a while for the movie industry to seize on his presence. By 1958 the actor’s star was on the rise playing the virile “Buck” in the steamy film version of God’s Little Acre. Based on the notorious novel by Erskine Caldwell and co-starring Tina Louise, Vic Morrow, and Buddy Hackett, who would also have careers in hit television series, the movie was filmed in downtown Stockton and on the rural edges of the city.

It was then, perhaps to escape the intensity of the sexually and politically charged drama they were filming, or maybe just to get out of the valley’s summer heat, that Jack Lord discovered The Haggin Museum.

In 1959 he made his first gift to the Haggin, beginning the philanthropic relationship at the core of the exhibit Picasso, Miró & Hawaii Five-0. The gift included an assortment of Japanese woodblock prints, decorative art objects and textiles. It was followed in 1972 by a donation of more than 70 lithographs.

Most were published by Fernand Mourlot, whose Paris studio was the epicenter of fine art printmaking. Founded in 1852 the Atelier Mourlot originally made printed

wallpaper. It was transformed by the founder’s grandson when he invited the most important modern artists of the 20th century — Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró,

Marc Chagall and many others — to experiment with fine art printmaking in his workshop. There they embraced the challenge of lithography, a process involving drawing directly on a large piece of limestone.

The prints in this exhibit represent key ideas in modern art. Modernists recognized traditional art’s inability to adequately represent a world dramatically changed by the Industrial Revolution. They turned their attention to dreams, fantasies and emotions. They also embraced formal experimentation. Drawing and paint handling became freer and color more expressive. Many artists turned toward abstraction.

In addition to the prints published by Mourlot, Jack Lord gifted the Haggin with a significant collection by lesser-known artist Jean Charlot, a French muralist and lithographer who lived and worked with friend Diego

Rivera in Mexico before moving Hawaii. This work is on view for the first time in Stockton.

Lord’s love of printmaking shaped the collection he so generously gave to The Haggin Museum, which includes a lithograph of his own. Another print, from the same edition, is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This exhibition is organized by The Haggin Museum with guest curators Monika Meler and Bett Schumacher from University of the Pacific. Featuring 47 restored lithographs, it provides an American perspective on European modernism and unique insight into the mind underneath that amazing head of hair. SPECIAL EXHIBITION

This interactive new exhibit, on loan from the Minnesota Children’s Museum, gives children the opportunity to step inside the framework of famous paintings and explore art from the inside out.

Children enter the special exhibit by stepping through an over-sized frame and instantly become immersed in the worlds created by well-known artists. Each work is re-created as a three-dimensional, sensory, walk-in environment that includes a print of the artist’s original work, as well as important facts about the artist’s life and painting style.

Children and adults can enjoy a robust noontime meal in Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers, climb into a tent and explore camping gear in John Singer Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara and add “corn husks” to the flower tower in Diego Rivera’s Corn Festival. Enter Clementine Hunter’s Big Chicken and get behind the reins of a giant rooster. Visitors can also explore a small collection of Mona Lisa prints featuring the original and famous parodies, then step behind a cutout version and replace Mona Lisa’s face with their own.

Enter Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers and learn about rural life at the turn of the century. Visitors can tend to a chicken and eggs, prepare a meal in the kitchen, set the dining table, enjoy a noontime dinner, and mix and match the farmers’ patterned shirts. They can observe the painting’s details, such as patterns, the farmers’ tan lines and the hour of the meal.

Camp at Lake O’Hara by John Singer SargentVisitors travel to the Canadian Rockies in

1916 at John Singer Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara. Children can climb inside a tent and explore

camping gear like Sargent would have used. After cooking a pretend meal over the campfire, kids can

tell stories around the fire and arrange items in a magnetic frame to show what a painting of today’s campsite may look like.

Corn Festival by Diego RiveraTravel south of the border through this piece from

the Court of Fiestas in the Ministry of Education Building in Mexico City. Visitors can explore a rendition of one of Rivera’s frescoes, add flowers and ribbons of “corn husks” to the flower tower for a celebration and include their flourish in a mural on a miniature building.

In addition to climbing inside works of art, children can curate their own art gallery, draw self portraits at a designated computer station, take part in an art hunt through the exhibit and let their imaginations run wild by creating as many different images as possible at the three-dimensional pattern puzzle.

This exibit encourages children to make a personal connection with art and allows them to have fun and ask questions. The interactive and unique experience that Framed provides could likely be a first step in fostering a lifelong appreciation and understanding of art.

This trip starts with a guided tour of John Muir’s seventeen room Martinez mansion. Muir, a naturalist, conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club was also a writer, farmer, orchardist and wine-maker. The seven acre property, where he lived and raised his family, contains the 1882 mansion with original furnishings and a two story adobe, built in 1848. The property is decorated for the Christmas season every year.

There will be a no-host lunch at First Street Cafe in downtown Benicia and if time permits, a stop by a historic glass blowing shop before boarding the bus to visit the Camel Barn Museum which housed U.S. Army beast-of- burden camels until they were auctioned off in 1864.

Lastly, travelers will finally have a chance to visit the Mormon Temple Center whose architecture on the hill has been admired so many times on trips returning from the Bay Area. This stop will include guided tours of the gardens, special holiday presentations and videos of the temple proper. Bring your camera for scenic views of Oakland and San Francisco.

Phawnda Moore is a professional calligrapher who studied lettering with Jim Lewis at Delta College. She has spent over 30 years keeping the art of fine handwriting and drawing alive.

Core Collection Enhancement Project Update

The summer issue of the Members’ Bulletin outlined gallery renovations and improvements that will allow the Haggin to enhance its stewardship and interpretation of its core art collection. The enhancement project will begin with the closure of the Pioneer Room. This gallery, which for decades has featured displays of the Museum’s core history collections, will be repurposed to feature paintings from the Haggin Collection by North American artists.

Many of the artifacts from the current Pioneer Room will be relocated to some of the Museum’s other history galleries, while others will be archived in storage. New text panels in the Victorian Hallway will introduce Stockton history to visitors and enhancements to the Jennie Hunter rooms will include new lighting and new interpretive materials.

Over the coming months museum members are encouraged to visit and see for themselves the exciting changes taking place here at the Haggin.

no city, county, state or federal funding, we depend on the generosity of our members and the community at large. Your museum membership is an extremely important component of the Museum’s fiscal viability and funds approximately 25% of annual operations.
