VisaCitizens of the US, Canada, Australia, NewZealand, Turkey, and the EU countries areissued free, 15-day visa stamps upon arrival

in the Kurdistan Region. Other nationalitiesare required to get a valid Iraqi visa fromtheir local Iraqi diplomatic office. The KRGRepresentations abroad do not issue Iraqi

visas. Travelers wishing to remain in theRegion for a period longer than 15 daysare required to visit an immigration office

to obtain the necessary documentation. This process involves the completion ofnumerous forms and a mandatory bloodtest. The entire process can take up to

four hours to complete. Companies mayexpedite the visa application process byregistering a new employee with Iraqi

authorities and applying for all necessarypermits on behalf of the individual prior tohis or her arrival in Kurdistan.

ErbilLife in Erbil began with the creation of thehistoric Erbil Citadel, which has been con-tinuously inhabited since at least 6000 BCE.

The Citadel, which sits atop a 30-meter high

plateau and is designed in a circular shape, has inspired the development of the city as awhole, with increasingly large, concentric rings

expanding out from the location. The geo-graphic size of Erbil has expanded dramatical-ly in recent years, as has the citys population

(growing from 500,000 residents in 2004 to2 million in 2012). This rapid development hasplaced a strain on Erbils existing infrastruc-ture, particularly in regards to its road net-

works and sewer systems. However, the con-siderable development that has taken placewithin the capital over the past few years has

alleviated these issues to some extent.

The Kurdistan Region has been home to an indigenous Kurdish population for thousands of years. The multi-tude of cultures and civilizations that have written their history across the Kurdistan Region have resulted ina population and landscape that reflects a great deal of diversity. The Kurdistan Region boasts nearly 65 offi-cially recognized tourism areas that reflect the mixture of Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Yazidi religious tra-ditions of its inhabitants. The sights visitors are treated to include the 8,000 year-old citadel of Erbil, a host ofancient Christian churches and monasteries, as well as Lalish, the holiest city for the Regions Yazidis (a faiththat blends elements of Sunni Islam, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism). Natural attractions include the breath-taking mountain views provided by the sinuous Hamilton road as it winds its way from Erbil to the Iranianborder, as well as lush valleys, mountain peaks, and plunging ravines that drive home the message that the vis-itor really is in the other Iraq.

Slemaniicknamed the cultural capital of theurdistan Region, the modern city of

emani was founded in 1784. Today, it iswell known for its open, relatively liberal,nd tolerant society, as well as being a

enter for culture and learning. The cityoasts a population of approximately 1.9

million inhabitants and is geographicallyxpanding at a rapid pace. Prior to

003, the city was contained within60-meter ring road. However, since

hen, rapid urbanization has led to

esidential and commercial developmentutside the ring. Without the benefitf a uniform development masterlan, this sprawl has been somewhat

regular in its pattern. The master planhat has since been implemented is wellonceived in improving functionality

while supporting projected populationrowth. As such, Slemani currentlyas the capacity to accommodatehe projected five-year population

DuhokThe modern city of Duhokwas established as anOttoman Caliphate in

1887, and has historicallyserved as a bridge to theRegions most strategicallysignificant neighbor:

Turkey. The city, which ishome to approximately1.3 million residents, has a

comprehensive master planthat will guide developmentthrough 2032; the planitself calls for a phased

approach to addresscurrent and future issues, particularly the need for

    urban rehabilitation and

infrastructure improvement.Duhoks proximity tothe Tigris River (and the

scenic mountain rangesthat frame the waterway)make it ideally suited for

When I first arrived in Erbil,I heard that we were toofocused on internationalmenu items, particularlyItalian or Continental cui-sines. We decided to place

greater emphasis on thelocal market. So, we broughtin supplementary Kurdishand Turkish chefs to give ourmenu a more authentic feel.To that end, we have tried toget a better feeling for whatthese clients prefer to eatand how they like to eat. Wehave adopted a very reactiveapproach. We try to bring inthe expertise needed to ful-fill these requests and trainour existing personnel.

    IIG: Can you give our

    readers a breakdown of

    the clientele that frequent

    your store?

G:60% of our clients arelocals, 20% are from Turkey,

and the other 20% arefrom Europe or America.Actually, only about

20% of our customersare patrons of the DivanHotel. Of course, the Divanattracts the highest-ranking

executives and Beymencaters to an exclusiveclientele, so there is an

    obvious connection there.

IIG: Turning to Beymenscurrent collection, what aresome of the leading brandsand items available?G:Beymen offers its ownline of clothing, and thenit offers top brands like

Cornelliani, Gucci, Dolce& Gabbana, Ralph Lauren,

and Armani; we have morethan 80 brands for menand women. In terms ofitems, we offer everything a

person could need. Jackets, pants, ties, cufflinks, socks, shoes, bags, jewelry

IIG: Is there a specificbrand that you think execu-tives need to know about?G:Kiton. Its an Italianbrand from Napoli, and its

put it on; it makes you feelgood just to touch it.

IIG: Do you think that thecurrent global fashiontrends are starting to takeroot here in Erbil?G:Its different dependingon the area. For example,

just because the color blueis fashionable in Istanbuldoesnt mean that its

fashionable here. You canwear lots of different colorsor patterns in Europe andlook quite fashionable, but

here, you will stand out. Most of our local customersprefer light brown or

    beige clothing. They start

wearing those colors at anearly age, and those colorsbecome very ingrained in

their fashion preferences. However, we want toexpose them to lots of

    different options.

    Luxury Brands

G: Can you please tell usmore about your servicend its advantages?G:The main advantages ofur service are speed, priva-y, and comfort. When you

hoose to utilize a privateet, you are able to fly to areater number of airportshan is possible with the

tandard commercial air-nes. As a result, you get toour final destination faster

    nd more directly. In fact,

two-thirds of our businessflights are between cities not

    served by daily scheduledflights.

Another advantage is theprivacy the charter service

offers: you can freely discussimportant and confiden-tial matters with your col-

leagues. Whether privacy isimportant to you for busi-ness or personal reasons, private jets offer a discrete

    travel environment.

IIG: As a luxury brand, howdo you ensure you stay at

the top of your game?TG:In order to stay at thetop, we pay great attention

to the quality of our service. From catering to greetingpassengers at the terminal,

no detail is ignored. We havea database for the food anddrink preferences of ourpassengers so that when

they fly with us again, theywill have their favorite foodsduring the flight.

    Accessibility is another

important feature in thisbusiness. Our aircraft is

registered in the mostfrequently utilized inter-net-based sales systems andour Commercial Department

can respond by telephone ore-mail to any flight requestwithin an hour.

IIG: Has there been a signif-icant increase in execu-tive charter flights to theKurdistan Region sincethe opening of the ErbilInternational Airport in2010?

TG:We see the most poten-tial growth in the KurdistanRegion; the increasing GDP

thanks to its natural resourc-es makes the KurdistanRegion an ideal market for

growth. The main factors in thegrowth of business aviationare increased spending

power, the globalizationof large companies, newbusiness models for the

    high-income segment, and

travelers who are less willingto accept the hassles of trav-

eling via scheduled airlines. All of these elements arecurrently present in modernthe Kurdistan Region.

Moreover, with the veryrecent decision of the USFederal Aviation Authority

(FAA) to lift its ban on com-mercial planes flying fromthe US into the KurdistanRegion, we strongly believe

there will be a tremendousamount of executive chartertraffic on par with scheduled

    services, which have grown

more that 400% in just 4years.

IIG: Are there any regions orcountries in which TJets isnot presently operating orrefuses to carry passengers?TG:We have very goodinsurance coverage and aslong as our aviation safety

standards are met, TJetsand its highly experiencedcrew can fly to any part of

    Currently, we are able

However, we haveplans to increase our

be able to obtain water resources for twoyears. As a result, we had to find our ownsolution to the water issue. Until we couldfind one, we suspended construction. We were able to reinitiate construction in2012 by installing water tanks to ensurethat our facility always has the best possible

quality of water. Te completion date of theproject is 2014.

IIG: Do you think the solutions for prob-

lems such as these should come from the

private sector, the government, or a com-

bination of the two working together?

S: Of course, the private sector or

individual companies can try to find solu-tions for some of these issues. For example, look at the water issue. Right now, everyoneutilizes wells. What happens when that sup-ply runs out? What will people do? Tatswhat were trying to deal with right now. Weare trying to identify realistic solutions that

we can use but that everyone else can alsoutilize. However, I dont believe that these areindividual problems; they are issues expe-rienced by many people here in Kurdistan. So, the problems require concrete, innova-tive solutions that can really only be imple-mented by the government.
