SHCC Barber Shop
Happy June everyone!
As we transition into Summer it's
important to continue to remind
everyone as you're on the golf course,
at the pool, or just out and about, to
continue to use sunscreen to protect
yourself from the damaging effects of
the sun.
On a separate note, I'd like to take this
time and remind everyone that as the
weather gets hotter, it gets busier here
in the barbershop. So please remember
to book your appointments in advance
of any activities or events you are
preparing for.
As a friendly suggestion, it is probably
a good idea to either book your next
appointment before you leave the
barber shop or book your appointment
a week in advance.
At your service,
Chris Montoya
Barbershop
will be Closed
from 6/6/18-
6/9/18.
F RO M T H E B OA R D DA RY L I M L E R
Welcome to a new fiscal year! I am honored to have been elected your President. I
would like to welcome our new Board Members: Randy Blackman, Bob Fleming and Brian
McKay. I look forward to the continued guidance of Jamie Casso, who did a fine job as
President this past year! I must acknowledge and thank Curt Passow, Dan Edwards and
Bernie Kloenne for their dedicated service as they leave the Board of Directors. For the
upcoming year I am supported by Bob Diltz as Vice President, Joe Brunansky serving as
Secretary and Micky Lo will continue as the Club Treasurer. The committee assignments for
the upcoming year are: Wayne Partee, Membership liaison, Bob Fleming, House liaison,
Brian McKay, Tournament liaison, Randy Blackman, Governance liaison and Jim Paliwoda,
Greens liaison.
I will strive to preside and perform with the best interests of the Club as my protocol.
We must be a Club of balance as there are numerous tasks to manage. I am hopeful to
provide limited direction to our staff through our General Manager, Chris Banner enabling
him to perform and achieve desired results. The Board of Directors must govern within the
context of the bylaws while maintaining our valuable assets and pursuing improvements. It
takes tremendous effort to achieve adequacy in such a roll, never mind performing it well.
With the assistance of many valuable members, I am looking forward to success!
The baseline necessity of the Board of Directors is to utilize the committee structure
system while maintaining a financial balance, all the while ensuring satisfaction and
tranquility of the membership. The various committees provide us the guidance needed to
make confident decisions to enhance the South Hills Country Club experience for all
members.
As a private club, we do experience mood swings. Sometimes becoming excited and
upset about things that are a moderate concern, easily handled within our committee based
system. When the governance system is performing well, it is not only good for the Club, it
is good for the membership! I invite your insights and suggestions in that regard.
With our new Chef, Jeff Brown on board I will look forward to seeing you at the club
to confirm we have new positive direction for dining. Make reservations and provide
feedback so our club can prosper!

As the golf course recovers from the recent aerification the playing conditions are
optimal. Brett DeBie and his team have done superb job in keeping the golf course in great
condition. Mike Jack and his staff have been busy with numerous tournaments including
the Hustler’s Tournament and South Hills Ladies Team matches which were well attended
and the competition was spirited. Don’t forget to sign up for the upcoming Golf Fest
Tournament the weekend of June 8th through the 10th.
The Social Committee has been extremely busy planning fun and entertaining
events. Don’t forget about Dad and come celebrate on June 17th for the SHCC Father’s
Day BBQ. Once again, Bocce Ball returns to the 9th fairway on June 22nd and Club ‘in at
the Club with an evening of music, libations and fun on Friday, June 29th. We recently had
a great turnout for the Spring Wine Tasting, Cinco de Mayo Celebration, Daou Wine
Dinner and Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch Buffet. Please be sure to make your
reservations early for upcoming events.
Summer is here and there is still time to register for the youth program. Swim,
Dive, Golf and Tennis are going to be fun and instructional. The SHCC Sharks swimming
led by Coach Courtney Robertson and dive headed by Olivia Palmer are underway, but
you can still register. We will be offering a taco bar poolside on Friday nights after swim
practice, so come join us. The Tennis Program conducted again by Shane Trear runs
through June and July. The Junior Golf Clinics begin this month on Tuesdays and
Thursdays with Kyle Mendoza providing golf instruction to our junior golfers. Sign up in
the Golf Shop today.
South Hills Country Club is very excited to announce our NEW
Social Associate Membership
This program is designed for our CURRENT Social Members and NEW Members
interested in the Social Program at South Hills Country Club.
For our CURRENT Social Members, this is an opportunity to lower
your monthly dues from $297.50 to $148.75 per month.
Here is how it works...to convert to a Social Associate Member you would need to refer one
new Social Associate Member. Once that member has been approved for membership, both
members; Current Social Member and new Social Associate Member will pay monthly dues
of $148.75 instead of the regular dues of $297.50.
The discounted monthly dues for the Social Associate Membership conclude when either of
the Social Associate Members opts to resign their membership.
This program also applies to two new members applying together,
splitting the initiation fee of $250.
For new members coming in through referral of a current golf member,
the referring member receives an incentive of Club Credit.

By: Carol Stewart, USGA/PGA/SCGA Rules Official
FOUR BALL STROKE PLAY (AKA: PARTNER'S BETTER BALL) Since we play a lot of partners events at South Hills this review should be viewed as a resource to assist in familiarizing yourself with the Rules of Golf as they apply to this format of play. Representation of Side: A side may be represented by either partner for all or any part of the stipulated round; both partners need not be present. An absent competitor may join their partner between holes, but not during play of a hole. Once your partner has teed off on a hole, if you are absent, you may not join your partner until the next hole. However, while you may not play that hole, you may exchange advice with your partner. Scoring: The marker is required to record for each hole only the gross score of whichever partner's score is to count. The gross scores to count must be individually identifiable; otherwise, the side is disqualified. (Circle the score.) Only one of the partners needs to comply. Your side is only required to record one score for each hole and on the line of the partner who made the score. Your scorecard
needs to be signed by your marker and either you or your partner. Order of Play: Balls belonging to the same side may be played in the order the side considers
best. If your side is away during play of a hole, you or your partner may play the next stroke. Wrong Ball: If a competitor is in breach for making a stroke at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes and must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under Rules. Their partner incurs no penalty, even if the wrong ball was his or hers. Your partner should place a ball on the spot from which you played the wrong ball. Advice: During a stipulated round, a player must not:
A. Give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course other than their partner
Or B. Ask for advice from anyone other than their partner
If you ask or give advice you are in breach of the Rules of Golf. In four ball play this breach is treated the same way as playing a wrong ball. Therefore, if you are in breach, your partner does not incur a penalty, even if your partner is assisted by your breach. Same old “( Don’t Ask, Don’t tell)”. Penalty to Side: A side is penalized for a breach of any of the following: Both carrying more than 14 clubs. (Four stroke penalty & must take out of play.) Breach of a rule
that would assist your partner. Any local rule or Condition of the Competition for which there is a
maximum penalty per round.
Until next month, good golfing!
