CATHERINE AND MIKE

LIANA AND DON

For Catherine and Mike, Garden Villas in exclusive Erin Mills offered the perfect opportunity for the couple to realize their dream of homeownership. As first-time buyers, they were happy to find a beautiful townhome they could afford in a great location. “Mike grew up in Mississauga and works in his family’s mechanic shop in the city,” Catherine says. “I’ve lived here most of my life, and I’m an athletic therapist at a sports medicine clinic in Port Credit. Our commuting time is minimal.”

She says their decision was also based on lifestyle. “Erin Mills is close to everything, and there is a fair amount of green space here. There’s a lot of opportunity for people to keep active and enjoy the outdoors.”

Mike and Catherine bought the 1,665 sq. ft. three-bedroom Mayfair Garden Villa. “We loved the fact that our home is an end unit and has so many windows,” Catherine says. “The open-concept on the main floor works well, and the three bedrooms are all a good size. And we really appreciate the walkout rooftop patio over the garage.”

Catherine says she and Mike have had a totally positive buying experience. “Great Gulf has gone above and beyond; you can tell they really care. They even held a meet-and-greet barbecue for the neighbourhood once everyone moved in.”

The couple like their home so much, that they referred Mike’s brother and Catherine’s cousin, who also bought at Garden Villas. “We’ll definitely buy from Great Gulf again when we’re ready to move up,” Catherine adds.

When Don and Liana had their third child in 2001, they decided to move from their south Etobicoke home in a mature neighbourhood to a community with younger families. “We wanted to be in a community filled with kids for ours to play with… just like the neighbourhood where we grew up,” Liana says.

The couple purchased a four-bedroom home from Great Gulf at this established, sold-out community in Woodbridge, and moved in 5½ years ago. Liana says they are very happy there. So are their three sons, Andrew (12), Daniel (9) and Matthew (6). “If we even suggest moving some day, they get upset,” Liana says. “They have many friends here, plus we have three large parks we can walk to. Everything we need is close by.”

“It was a big decision for us,” Liana explains. “We chose Sonoma Heights because of its location and because of Great Gulf’s solid reputation for building a good home. We’ve had excellent service.”

Both Don and Liana like the design of the Warren. “The brick colour and large porch have a lot of curb appeal,” Liana says, “and the open-concept kitchen and family room is where we spend all our time. Our home is 2,880 sq. ft. in size – and we use it all!”

SPRING & SUMMER MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

• Check furnace filter.

• Check air conditioning unit before the hot days arrive to ensure that it is functioning properly, i.e. blowing cold air through the vents.

• Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

• Clean humidifier.

• During the hot months you may notice that condensation may occur behind the vapour barrier on the basement walls. This is a result of excess humidity in the home and should be removed by way of circulation of dry air or the use of a de-humidifier.

• Water lawn regularly. New lawns must be watered in order to promote good strong root growth. The majority of new sod failures can usually be attributed to lack of water.

• Fertilizer is a very important step to a healthy green lawn and should be applied three times per season: Spring application - April/May Summer application - July/August Fall application - September/October

On Friday, August 15th Great Gulf Homes’ employees, trades and consultants will tee off for the company’s 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. As for many years, this well-attended event will be held at The Cardinal Golf Club in Newmarket. This popular tournament is a prime example of Great Gulf’s ongoing commitment to raise the quality of life in the communities in which they build. The beneficiary of the Tournament will be Sunnybrook Foundation, with funds directed for the second year in a row to the Department of Neurosciences at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. At the 2007 tournament, Dr. Ken Shulman, Sunnybrook’s Chief, Neurosciences Program, underscored the importance of this program that deals with understanding and treating disorders of brain structure and function. Neurosciences’ multidisciplinary team strives to de-stigmatize these conditions and provide a process of care that makes it easier for patients and families to navigate the health care system. The Neurosciences Program focuses on specialty areas related to disorders including stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, mood disorders, and traumatic brain injury. Last year, Great Gulf donated $112,570 to this cause by matching the total raised by the trades and consultants. That long-standing tradition will be carried out at the 2008 event, which will be co-

chaired by Great Gulf’s Production Manager Gus Platis, Site Works Manager Eugene Filice, Vice President Sales & Marketing Sandra Frasson, and Manager of the Decor Centre Karen Norton. Since 2001, the Great Gulf golf tournament has collected over $470,000. Each year, the Great Gulf Charitable Foundation supports a wide range of charities, with an emphasis placed on high-priority needs of families and children. Great Gulf is the founding sponsor of the endowment fund for “The Starlight Starbright Room at the Hospital for Sick Children,” currently serving children on the 9th floor in the Oncology Department.
