OR many British golfers, the very concept of a ‘golf holiday’ originated

in Spain with resorts like La Manga, El Saler and Sotogrande.

There are now over 300 golf courses across Spain and its islands and more than 50 million holidaymakers head to the country every year.

It isn’t hard to see why it remains so popular with Golfbreaks.com clients and one of Europe’s premier golf destinations.

With so many different

choices, from the lively Costa del Sol to the quieter parts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, it can be hard to know where to start when you are looking to plan your next Spanish golfing escape.

This guide is the perfect starting point as we showcase some of the best courses and resorts across the country – or why not speak to our experienced sales team who know all there is to know about golf in Spain and will help you find your ideal Spanish golf break.

This guide starts on the Costa de la Luz, where you will find premier resorts like Montecastillo and Islantilla alongside smaller coastal clubs like Montenmedio and Sherry Golf Jerez.

We dedicate four pages to the wealth of golfing options on the Costa del Sol, where you can play a wide range of courses and sample the region’s many shops, bars and restaurants.

We also highlight the best courses in Almeria and Murcia, those on the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada and the golf on offer on the Spanish islands,

including Majorca, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Regardless of region, Spain offers a climate which is perfect for year-round golf, and flights are readily available to all parts of the country from nearly every airport in the UK.

We hope you enjoy exploring everything Spain has to offer – we look forward to helping you find a great deal.

he Costa del Sol is quite simply the obvious place to start if you want to

enjoy a golfing holiday in the Spanish sunshine.

The region stretches from Gibraltar in the south west to Malaga in the east and you can choose from an array of perfectly presented courses where water is rarely far from being in play.

There are over 50 courses in this sun-kissed region and many directly overlook the warm waters of the Alboran Sea, on the other side of which is Morocco and the North African coast.

Let’s begin in the Marbella area, which is in the heart of the Costa del Sol and therefore a natural base for your trip.

Needless to say, glamorous beaches, bars and restaurants

are not in short supply and neither are high-quality resorts and courses.

One of the oldest courses in the area is Rio Real, which dates back to 1965 and was designed by Javier Arana, generally regarded as Spain’s most notable architect. Among many others, Arana was also responsible for el Saler, arguably the country’s first course.

This compact layout enjoys fairways routed through pines and palm trees and repeatedly crosses the River Real.

The boutique hotel here is also special – the rooms are large and airy while a decadent wellness centre offers treatments ranging from massages to facials. You can play at the nearby Marbella Golf and Country Club, designed by the great Robert Trent Jones Snr, while staying here. enjoying an elevated site, make sure you leave time to enjoy the facilities in the palatial clubhouse.

The second oldest course in Spain is Guadalmina’s South. The first nine actually opened for play back in 1959 while what we see today was unveiled four years later. There is now also a North course and both run around the hotel Guadalmina

T

For glamour and excitement off the course Marbella takes some beating. this playground of the rich and famous is filled with high-quality restaurants and bars where you can stay out as long as you can stay awake.the marina is the area to head for to get your bearings.travel a little further afield to take in some culture and visit the ‘white village’ of Mijas, where you can wander up and down the atmospheric cobbled streets.

Spa & Golf Resort. From here you can also

easily reach Marbella, La Quinta and Atalaya. La Quinta is just inland from Puerto Banus and comprises three loops of nine designed by Spanish Ryder Cup stars Antonio Garrido and Manuel Pinero. The obvious place to stay is on site – at the Melia Marbella La Quinta Golf & Spa Resort.

Atalaya is the headquarters for the european PGA and located halfway between Marbella and estepona. Dating back to the 1960s, it is a classy design.

If you want to pay homage to the late Seve Ballesteros, then why not head for the first course he designed, Los Arqueros. The great man has left a layout here with plenty of water hazards and no little challenge.

PYR Marbella, Puerto Banus, is a great base if you are playing here.

To the east of Marbella is Los Monteros, a 5-star hotel and spa, from where you can easily access Marbella, La Quinta, Rio Real, el Chaparral and Santa Clara. The latter is conveniently close to Marbella itself.

Near Malaga, the woodland setting of el Chaparral sets it apart from the crowd

To the south of Malaga, 25 minutes from the airport, La Cala is arguably the largest golf resort in this part of Spain. It has three courses, Campo europa, Campo America and Campo Asia, all designed by the prolific American Cabell B Robinson, and they enjoy a dramatic setting at the foot of the Mijas mountains.

Both La Cala and el Chaparral are within easy reach of the hotel Mac Puerto Marina, just outside Torremolinos.

Santana is found between Mijas and Fuengirola and has now been open for 10 years. It is undoubtedly one of the best courses in the country, let alone the region, with white-marble sand a defining characteristic.

If you want to play here then the stylish hotel Las Palmeras in Fuengirola is the ideal base.

With such an array of accommodation and golfing options, the only difficulty is deciding where to start.

the Costa del sol is incredibly well serviced by flights from the UK. the two main airports are Gibraltar, in the west, and Malaga, in the east. this is a pleasingly compact region to visit. It’s around a 90-mile drive to get from one to the other, which takes little more than an hour and a half.that means you can pretty much take your pick of the courses you want to play and resorts you would like to visit in the knowledge you will never have far to travel.

he Costa de la Luz is located on the western-most part of the Andalucia

coastline, stretching from the historic city of Cadiz up to the Portuguese border.

There are several outstanding golf break options in the region, with the standout venue being Montecastillo. The course was the first to be designed by Jack Nicklaus in Spain and hosted the Volvo european Masters on the european Tour from 1997 to 2001. The layout stretches to over 6,600 yards and is a classic Nicklaus creation with everything laid out in view and very few blind tee shots or approaches. The course is parkland in nature and winds over rolling terrain. It has recently undergone a £2m refurbishment to improve the bunkers and drainage systems.

Drive for around 15 minutes out to the coast from Montecastillo and you find the 27-hole layout at Costa Ballena. Designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, the championship 18 comprises of the Palmeras and Olivos nines and measures a shade over 6,900 yards from the back tees. The course sits tight to the coast, with the 12th,

13th and 14th running directly alongside the beach. The design is largely flat and the fairways are fairly wide, although there are several lakes and punishing bunkers.

Further north, there are two excellent options close to the Portuguese border which can be easily accessed from either Seville or Faro airports. el Rompido has two courses which are among the best in the country. The modern club was opened in 2003 and initially just had the South Course before the North Course was laid out three years later. The club is located on the coast near huelva and the North is considered to be the premier layout there.

There are also three nine-hole loops to enjoy at nearby Islantilla. The club is the closest to Portugal on the Costa de la Luz and utilises the same stretch of coastline that houses many of the better-known layouts on the Algarve. All the courses here are parkland in nature and wind through trees and around lakes, but some are blessed with outstanding sea views and provide a pleasant contrast at various points through a round.

Alongside the four premier resorts, there are a range of smaller courses and clubs around the Costa de la Luz. Montenmedio plays through stunning countryside and is untouched by houses or villas, Sherry Golf Jerez has a more American feel with wide fairways and many lakes, or the Jose Maria Olazabal design at La Monacilla to experience golf in a tranquil pine forest setting.

The five-star Barcelo Montecastillo hotel has 121 luxury rooms and several villas on the doorstep of the renowned championship course and close to Sherry Golf Jerez and Costa Ballena.. There is also a five-star hotel on site at El Rompido which has 184 contemporary-designed rooms, 12 suites and direct access to the beach. Alternatively, try the Elba Hotel at Costa Ballena. This hotel opened in 2008 and offers views across the Atlantic coastline.

he area around the southern city of Almeria is one of the driest and

warmest places in europe, making it perfect for those looking to take a golfing trip out of the summer season.

If you are looking to experience something outside the norm then head straight for the Desert Springs resort in the north of the region.

This remarkable club is home to the Pete Mcevoy-designed Indiana Course, which was the first desert style course to be created in europe.

It contains many springs, dry riverbeds, rocks and cacti areas, and offers a unique experience for european golfers.

Quite simply, you will not find anywhere else like Desert Springs on the continent.

Also close by is the slightly more conventional but no less outstanding Valle de este.

This course is surrounded by volcanic rock and has three lakes and punishing sand traps throughout.

Both Desert Springs and Valle de este have on-site four-star hotels and are therefore an ideal base for a trip to the region.

Also worth trying is the five-

star hotel Golf Almerimar, which has a total of 278 rooms and 27 holes on-site.

Almerimar 1 and 2 were both designed by Gary Player and are defined by wide fairways, large greens and an abundance of water hazards.

Courses at Playa Serena, La envia and Alboran are also close by.

hINK of golf in Murcia and your thoughts will drift to La Manga.

In many respects, La Manga was the original golf resort and it remains ever-popular today.

There are three championship courses with the South being arguably the best. It is longer and wider than both the North and West courses, which have different challenges and charms.

La Manga also has a five-star hotel and apartments onsite and an abundance of high-quality leisure facilities.

Alternatively, take on the terrific course at La Finca and enjoy five-star luxury at the resort’s on site hotel and spa.

each bedroom at La Finca has views out over the course, gardens and swimming pool, with the escotera mountains sitting in the backdrop.

ORTH-EAST Spain is home to the country’s best layout, the Stadium

Course at PGA Catalunya. The course is a multiple

host of the Open de España on the European Tour, and was the scene of Miguel Angel Jimenez’s victory in this year’s tournament.

As would be expected of a European Tour host, the Stadium Course is long and has tight fairways and undulating greens.

PGA Catalunya is also home to the Tour course, which sits in the shadow of its neighbour but should not be ignored. It has wider fairways, shorter holes and sets up very well for the club golfer.

There is however more to golf in the Costa Brava than PGA Catalunya.

The Links and Forest courses at Emporada offer contrasting 18-hole tests in the heart of the region.

The Links Course is an inland track which has many features commonly found on seaside courses including dune-flanked fairways and rolling terrain.

Meanwhile, the Forest Course is a more classic woodland offering more

spacious fairways flanked by pine trees.

Alternatively, head to the region’s oldest course at Platja de Pals for a round which will make you feel closer to home than many of the other Meditteranean courses. The FW Hawtree course is defined by dense pine trees and has a distinctly English feel to it.

OU might be forgiven for thinking that a trip to the Costa Dorada

starts and ends with a city break in Barcelona, but the region is fast becoming a Spanish hotspot for terrific golf.

The standout resort in this part of the country is Lumine, which has two 18-hole layouts and a nine-hole course.

The club can be found near Salou and the Lakes Course is its premier track.

Designed by Greg Norman, the layout is extremely demanding and features an abundance of water hazards and punishing sand traps.

Norman is also responsible for designing the nine-hole Ruins course, which as the name suggests, runs through Roman ruins. It is less demanding than the Lakes course and is almost certain to provide enjoyable golf for anyone who plays there.

The Hills Course provides yet further contrast on the Lumine site. This charming course is set across the top of the surrounding hills and offers unrivalled views across the Mediterranean Sea.

Also providing wonderful views of the Mediterranean’s ‘Golden Coast’ and surrounding mountains is Bonmont.

This excellent course is set among the Serra de Llaberia hills and offers a demanding test, with no fewer than 90 bunkers, six lakes, thick woodland and several streams.

If you are planning to play at either Bonmont or Lumine, then a good base is the four-star Hotel Monica in Cambrils. The

hotel was fully renovated in 2011 and also has a fully equipped spa and wellness centre.

Alongside Bonmont and Lumine, the hotel is perfectly placed for several other courses including Club de Golf Aigüesverds, Golf Club Costa Daurada and Real Club de Golf El Prat.

The GreaT Golf Guide | Spain | Tenerife, Majorca and Gran Canaria

HILE there is a great deal of high-quality golf on the Spanish mainland,

the islands also have some equally stellar options.

Tenerife has eight courses, with the majority located on the southern and western shores.

The course at Las Americas is set into an amphitheatre to provide shelter from the wind

and features a number of lakes, streams and bunkers.

Up the coast, there are two courses at Costa Adeje and an impressive Dave Thomas creation at Abama.

The Amarilla Country Club in the south, and Real Club de Golf de Tenerife complete the island’s golf offering.

Alternatively, the popular holiday destination of Majorca

has over 15 courses scattered across the island.

Speak to the locals and they will say that Son Gual is the best course in Majorca. It measures over 7,000 yards, is frequently ranked inside Europe’s Top 100 and has some of the finest par-3s found anywhere on the continent.

The island also has an excellent supporting cast of

courses, with two layouts at Son Antem, Son Vida and Alcanada all worth a visit.

Or, base yourself in the south west part of the island and enjoy Santa Ponsa, Poniente, Bendinat and Andratx.

RAN Canaria has a climate and landscape which is almost perfect for

year-round golf. The southern tip of the island

is very close to the Moroccan coast, and therefore the best courses in the south take on a desert-style feel.

There are two outstanding courses at the Salobre resort, with the North arguably the best of the two. Designed by Ron Kirby, it features a series of holes carved into the surrounding desert rock and is known by locals as ‘The Beast’.

The South Course at Salobre is nicknamed ‘The Beauty’. It is less demanding than the North and is set amid a volcanic rock valley.

The Salobre resort also has an on-site five-star luxury Sheraton hotel and spa.

Also in the south of the island is the Philip MacKenzie Ross design at Maspolomas and the oceanside layout at Lopesan Meloneras.

Further up the coast near Morgan in the Tauro Valley, you come to the championship Arizona-style layout at Anfi Tauro, which features lakes, waterfalls and views of the nearby mountain range.
