Directions for the last two slides

The next two slides are the writing assignment for today.

You are to write a short essay for each of the two slides on your "The Great Debate" Notes sheet.

Read each, "Things to spark your writing" and pick one  topic from each slide.  

Then, in your short essay explain how the 1st slide topic applies to "freedom and/or equality" and  how the 2nd slide topic applies to "unity and/or diversity".  

Finally, explain your position for each topic.

ImmigrationA 2010 Arizona law allows police to demand immigration documents from anyone they suspect may be an illegal immigrants.  Without proper documentation, suspected illegal immigrants can be detained by the police.  Critics of the law are concerned that some ethnic and racial groups will be targeted for police response more than others.

EducationUntil about 25 years ago it was illegal to homeschool children in Washington State.  The Supreme Court has never specifically found a constitutional right to homeschool.  Today, parents may homeschool, if they meet certain state required qualifications.Should parents have the freedom to homeschool their children or should their child be required to attend public orprivate school?

TaxesShould everyone pay the same amount in taxes?  There havebeen proposals to make a 9% income tax on every American, so that every American would pay same tax rate.  Right now, we have a graduated system... rich pay 35% of theirincome in taxes,  the middle class pay about 20% of their income in taxes, the poor pay 5% to 0% in taxes.  Is this systemfair or equitable?

Health CareAbout 40 million Americans do not have health insurance coverage.  Some policians and organizaons say that the government should either provide coverage, or mandate that employers do so.  It just isn’t right that some Americans don’t get the health care they deserve.

EducaonExcelsior School in Byron, Calif. is having "students…pretend that they are Muslims, wear Muslim clothing to school, stage their own jihad via a dice game and pick out a Muslim name (to replace their own) from a list of 30."   An "outraged" teacher at Excelsior and parent of a seventh‐grader: "We can't even menon the name of Jesus in the public schools, but ... they teach Islam as the true religion, and students are taught about Islam and how to pray to Allah." 

EconomyThe top 1% of American income earners earn about 24% of all the income in the US economy.  Their income growth in the last 40 years has been about 75%.  At the same me, the boom 20% of the populaon earns about 1/10 of what the top 1% earn, and their (the boom 20%) income growth has been only 30% in the last 40 years.
