NEXT LUNCHEON MEETING: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2014
10:00 a.m. Board Meeting - Open to all members 11:00 a.m. Fellowship 12:00 Noon Luncheon
BIG SIR MESSAGE From Jim Brady
SIRS members, we are
going into autumn and
enjoying our growing
membership. We wel-
come our 5 new members
and invited guests
(hopefully soon to be new
members). Last months’
speakers were very moti-
vational; with great tech-
niques geared towards tennis and golf to keep us mentally posi-
tive. Their techniques could be useable in our daily lives also.
(Remember 1,2,3,4,5 pause 5,4,3,2,1).
October looks to be a great month. Our invited speaker is from
the Moffett Field Historical Society, with a field trip to Moffett
Field later in the month. (Thank you, Little SIR, Lou Figone.)
We want to give Pat Misener a round of applause for all the great
work he has done, being this year’s Area Governor and to be next
years’ Regional Director. Pat also received the SIRS 114 Distin-
guished Member Award, congratulations.
Lastly, to Robert Lindberg (Bob), who has recently moved to Van-
couver, Washington, SIRS 114 is proud to bestow Senior Honor-
ary Life Member Emeritus status. Bob, enjoy Vancouver; you will
be missed.
GUEST SPEAKER - JOHN MASCALI
From Little SIR, Lou Figone
Sons in Retirement Branch 114 will, for October, be having one of our speaker/tour months. Our speaker will be John Mascali from the Moffett Field Historical Society followed up with a tour of the Moffett Field museum and aircraft on Thursday the 16th at 10AM.
John Mascali is a retired Naval Reserve Captain with over 41 years of flying experience, starting in 1959 after gradua-tion from the Naval Academy and ending in 2000 with his retirement as a commercial pilot having flown for both Pan Am and Delta. He credits his long career to the adage “There are bold pilots and there are old pilots but there are no old bold pilots”. His 35 year career in the Navy included tours at Moffett field Naval Air Station as Commanding Officer of VP 2920, Patrol Squadron 91 and VTU 8087.
John’s presentation will be “the History of Moffett Field”, tracing it’s 75 year history from it’s beginning in 1930, when Mrs. Laura Whipple of Niles led a campaign to pur-chase more than 1000 acres of farm land in Sunnyvale and Mountain View for $476,000 then sold it to the Navy for a $1. John will share pictures and stories of the building of Hanger One and the many different squadrons and aircraft that have flown out of Moffett Field over the years.
