Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ:
Wow how time flies. It wasn’t that long ago Keri and I were
meeting you with a U-Haul and no baby. What an amazing
difference a few months can bring. It has truly been a blessing to
serve with you here in Yadkinville.
In October, we will be leaving Hebrews behind and shifting our
attention to the Old Testament book of Ruth. While I have enjoyed
Hebrews, I am excited to get into the story and narrative of Ruth,
Naomi, and Boaz. Please take some time to read through Ruth; it’s
a much shorter book than Hebrews. I know we will have fun as we
read and grow together with Ruth.
While not in October we are quickly coming up on All-Saints Sunday on November 4th
. This is
a particularly meaningful service in our Christian calendar. It is our time to remember the great
cloud of witnesses that have gone on before us. As we remember and celebrate you are invited
to bring a picture of loved ones who find themselves in God’s eternal kingdom. The picture can
be framed or unframed, but we do ask that all pictures be 8x10 or smaller.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Jonathan

United Methodist Women: Fall has arrived and we receive it with “Thanksgiving”! We have so
many blessings to be thankful for. After a long hot summer we appreciate the
cooler days. We survived the anxiety most felt in our area from Hurricane
Florence. The storm caused many disasters in areas very close to us that continue
to be felt. We are thankful we are able to assist in the many opportunities
available, especially through our church.
Thankfully, the Conference United Methodist Women Annual Meeting Celebration at Lake Junaluska was
postponed to October 12, 13 and 14, due to the anxiety and uncertainty of the storm. We have five from our unit
that will be attending. With the new date, there are opportunities for others to register. You may do so by
contacting www.wnccumw.org. Call me if you are interested or have questions. At the Annual Meeting in 2019,
we will be Celebrating the Legacy of 150 years in Mission. Members are encouraged to contribute to a Legacy
Fund at least $18.69 each year to help keep the wonderful Legacy going for many more years. The year 1869 is
when our organization was started by six ladies determined to help two missionaries get a woman doctor and
teacher to help girls and women in India. Females were not allowed to be examined or taught by a male doctor
or teacher. As a result, a hospital and school are still in existence today that are named in honor of those two
women. We encourage our members and anyone else to contribute to the Legacy Fund.
September is the month our local units had their annual Pledge Service. Mildred Carter, Treasurer for our unit,
presented the Pledge Service program at the Tuesday Night and Thursday Night Circles. Many of our members
support the unit and mission work in many ways; however, with the Pledge to Mission, money is sent to the
conference and then to the National Office to make sure there are funds to support the many mission projects
that support women, children, and youth all over the world. Members may make a pledge to mission without
attending a meeting. Contact Mildred at 336-679-8034, or you may give her a check made payable to
Yadkinville United Methodist Women (YUMW).
Good News that you have been waiting for! Our fall Chicken Pie Luncheon is Wednesday, October 24,
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m, ticket price $9.00. Several of you, as well as some in the community, have been
asking. Many of you are the reason we are able to make it happen! Of course, we need lots of help. Some of the
opportunities: working the day of the luncheon (serving plates or drinks, preparing and delivering carry-out
trays, helping in kitchen), selling and buying tickets, helping with preparations Tuesday afternoon or evening
before the meal (setup tables, prepare carry-out desserts). Needed are lots of desserts, donations of chicken,
sweet and un-sweet tea. All items are needed by Tuesday noon. This is a great opportunity for the community to
come together for a good meal, as well as meet and greet old and new friends. Carry-out trays will be delivered
if 10 or more tickets are purchased.

Missions: The mission project for October is UMCOR Disaster Relief. All loose plate offering and
designated offerings during October will go to the project. Instruction information for Relief kits (cleaning,
hygiene, and school) are on the display table in the Commons.
October Mission Focus: UMCOR: United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the agency of
the United Methodist Church which provides emergency and long term assistance in the event of disasters. This
ministry has been ongoing for more than 80
years.
Many of you have asked about how
you, and we as a church family, can help in
response to the Hurricane Florence relief
efforts. First and foremost, please pray for
everyone who was in the path of Hurricane
Florence. If you would like to make a
financial contribution to UMCOR, please
make your checks payable to Yadkinville
UMC and put UMCOR/Hurricane
Florence relief in the memo section of the
check. We will then send one check from
the church to UMCOR.
UMCOR reports that damage assessments in North and South Carolina began immediately. However,
these assessments have not been completed due to high water in many of the affected areas.
UMCOR asks that those wishing to assist please do not self-deploy or donate unsolicited
items. Western North Carolina and South Carolina Conferences are managing their responses locally and will
make requests for materials and response teams as they continue their assessments.
To donate online to UMCOR, go to https://www.wnccumc.org/committee-on-relief.
Yadkin Christian Ministries: YCM needs for October are any canned foods. Please place in the containers in
the Commons. One volunteer said "the shelves are almost empty."
If you have suggestions, comments, or ideas please share them with any member of the Missions committee or
contact Gingi Parker.
Gingi Parker, Chairperson
Funtimers: The Funtimers will meet at the church on Wednesday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m.
and travel to Pilot Mountain and have lunch at Soppers. We may also check out some of the
interesting shops in town. Please let Betty Williams (336-679-6139 or
[email protected]) know if you plan to go.
Your IRA/401(k) Required Minimum Distribution – How to Make the Most of
It: Per the IRS, people 70-1/2 and older are required to take a minimum distribution from their IRA/401(k)
annually or be faced with a hefty tax penalty. If you must take a required minimum distribution, but don’t need
5
the funds and don’t want to pay income taxes on it, please consider gifting it to the Church as part of your
annual support.
To qualify for the tax credit, you must have your retirement plan administrator direct the distribution
DIRECTLY to Yadkinville UMC; it cannot pass through your hands or it will trigger an income taxable event
for you. Once received DIRECTLY, the Church will give you credit for the total gift.
If you have questions about how to execute this gift transaction, please contact either your plan
administrator, Bobbi Reavis, or Emmitte Winslow for guidance/advice.
During the fall and into winter, many folks are thinking of contributing stocks to their church. The
United Methodist Foundation of Western North Carolina will broker those stocks for us without a fee. If this is
of interest to you, please contact Emmitte Winslow ([email protected]) or Bobbi Reavis
([email protected]) for details.
