OUTCOME: We will be studying the gospel of Mark this term focusing on what Jesus did. We will consider Jesus’ ministry, his call to repentance, his death and resurrection in our place and our need to tell others about salvation through Jesus. The theme throughout is that Jesus is God, that we need to repent in order to be saved, and we need to tell others about salvation through Jesus. From this lesson children should learn a little bit about the book of Mark and Jesus ministry as well as Jesus’ baptism. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 1:1 – 15 LESSON: This lesson should serve as an introduction to the Gospel as recorded by Mark and to Jesus’ baptism. Try to teach the following: The nature of the book written by Mark (for older children you can discuss the four gospels in general, who wrote them and such like – to give a context, also you can discuss who Mark was.) The details of the baptism (many of them would have witnessed a baptism in church). I don’t think it is necessary to consider the difference between Jesus’ baptism and believer’s baptism at this age. Jesus’ profound teaching in 1:15 – discuss what it means to repent and to believe in the gospel of Jesus. You will be discussing this repeatedly throughout the term. NAME:___________________________________________________________ LESSON ONE: JESUS ARRIVES AND IS BAPTISED Mark 1:1 – 15 In Sunday School this term we will be studying the Gospel of Mark. This is a fast gospel which records the actions of our Lord Jesus Christ. From this we get our title for the series: What did Jesus do? Mark depicts Jesus as the Servant. In Mark 10:45 Jesus says: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus’ ultimate act as a servant was his death on the cross on our behalf. The first words that Mark records of Jesus are these: "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:15) As we study this gospel we will be looking to see what Jesus did, and we will be focussing on his message of repentance from sin and believing the good news - that the Kingdom of God is coming! Today we will learn of the first thing that Mark records about Jesus as he started his ministry – he got baptised. and learn about the

things Jesus did, especially His death on the cross,

we will learn about our need to repent and be saved,

As we read this Gospel

and to tell others about Jesus.

This term we are learning Phil 4:4 – 7 (ESV). Try to learn this for next week: [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Mark 10:45 (ESV) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

WEEK TWO: JESUS CALLS PEOPLE INTO THE KINGDOM Mark 1:16‐20     LESSON TWO: JESUS CALLS PEOPLE INTO THE KINGDOM Mark 1:16 – 20 BACKGROUND: The children have been introduced to the Gospel of Mark and they are now ready to learn about the actions of Jesus as recorded in Mark’s Gospel. From this lesson children should learn that Jesus calls people into his kingdom and that when he calls them – they come. They should also learn that just as the disciples were called in order to tell others about Jesus – so as we follow Jesus, that is still our role today. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 1:16 – 20 LESSON: Tell the story of how Jesus called Simon, Andrew, James and John. This story should be easy to dramatise and bring to life. Make sure that the children know that you are reading/telling the story from the Bible. You should stress the following points: No one refused Jesus when he called them. Here we see God’s sovereignty in choosing

his people and the fact that when called – the people responded immediately. Remind the children of their need for salvation.

Jesus called ordinary people, not necessarily those who were rich or famous. Jesus instructed them to be fishers of men – explain that this means that they were

going to be telling other people about Jesus, and stress the importance of this for Christians still today.

NAME:___________________________________________________________ LESSON TWO: JESUS CALLS PEOPLE INTO THE KINGDOM Mark 1:16 – 20 When Jesus walked on this earth, he called people into the Kingdom. When He called them, they came. Jesus told them to tell others about him. Jesus still calls people into the Kingdom today to be his children. Our work today is still to tell others about Jesus. Remember that Jesus died to take the punishment for our sin. We must believe in him and become part of his Kingdom and we must tell others about Jesus too.

THE GOSPEL OF MARK – WHAT DID JESUS DO?

Mark 10:45 (ESV) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Mark 1:16-18 (ESV) Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and

Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they

were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you

become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and

followed him.

Are you a fisher of men? Do you tell your friends about Jesus?

This term we are learning Phil 4:4 – 7 (ESV). Try to learn this for next week: [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. [5] Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

LESSON THREE: JESUS FORGIVES SIN: Mark 2:1 – 12 BACKGROUND: The children have been introduced to the Gospel of Mark and have learnt how Jesus called his followers. From this lesson children should learn that Jesus has the power to forgive sin (making him God) and to heal (although the healing will be picked up more next week), and of our need for forgiveness. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 2:1 – 12 LESSON: Tell this story – again it is a great story to tell in an exciting manner. Some of the deeper meaning may be lost on younger children – but they can still marvel at Jesus’ ability to heal, and identify him with God. Please teach the following points: Explain the concept of sin and forgiveness. Remind the children of the

lessons on forgiveness that we did in the last term of last year. No one but God can forgive sins – and yet Jesus shows that he can (he

proves his power by healing the man). This proves that he is God. Jesus identifies the man’s real need even though he does not ask for

forgiveness. We all have the same need – to be forgiven. If we trust in Jesus’ death in our place – we can be forgiven. Encourage the

children to think about their sin and their need for forgiveness.

NAME:___________________________________________________________ LESSON THREE: JESUS FORGIVES SIN: Mark 2:1 – 12

THE GOSPEL OF MARK – WHAT DID JESUS DO?

Mark 10:45 (ESV) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

This term we are learning Phil 4:4 – 7 (ESV). Try to learn this for next week: [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. [5] Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;

One day Jesus was preaching in a house that was so full that no more people could come in. Some men brought a paralysed man to Jesus so that Jesus could heal him, but they could not get in. They decided to take off the roof and lowered the man on his bed into the room in front of Jesus. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” But the people did not believe that Jesus could forgive sins. So to prove his power Jesus said to the paralysed man “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” from Mark 2: 1 – 12 (ESV)

Jesus was teaching the people that he had the power to forgive their

sins so that he could show them that he is God.

Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment

for your sins? Have you asked Jesus to forgive

your sins?

LESSON FOUR: JESUS HEALS THE SICK: Mark 5:21 – 24, 35 – 43 BACKGROUND: The children have been introduced to the Gospel of Mark and have learnt how Jesus called his followers and they have also seen that Jesus heals, although the previous lesson was on his power to forgive sin. This lesson will focus on his power to heal. From this lesson children should learn that Jesus has the power to heal. This power over life and death and over disease shows that he is God. The reversal of disease and death, which are consequences of the fall, give a foretaste of the Kingdom of God – where there will be no disease or death. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 5:21 – 24, 35 – 43 LESSON: Tell this story – again it is a great story to tell in an exciting manner. You can stress the fact that Jairus was a religious leader, and talk about the sadness in the family and the joy after the healing. Please stress the following points as appropriate: All that Jairus had to do was believe in Jesus – Jesus did everything else. We too must believe in Jesus. Talk about what we have to believe in in order

to be saved. By healing, Jesus showed that he had power over disease, showing himself to

be God. The Kingdom of God will have no death or disease as the curse will be

overturned – Jesus gives us a glimpse into the kingdom. If the subject of healing comes up, I think the biblical approach is that God

can and no doubt does heal, but stress the fact that the type of healings performed by Jesus were in order to prove to the people that he was God, and to show what the Kingdom would be like. Don’t get sidetracked.

THE GOSPEL OF MARK – WHAT DID JESUS DO?

Mark 10:45 (ESV) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

This term we are learning Phil 4:4 – 7 (ESV). Try to learn this for next week: [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. [5] Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything,

Mark tells the story of the daughter of Jairus. Jairus came and asked Jesus to heal his daughter. Then Jairus heard that his daughter was dead but Jesus said: “Do not fear, only believe.” Then Jesus took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Jesus showed that he is God who has the power over life and death and sickness. He gave us a picture of the Kingdom of God – where there is no sickness and no death. From Mark 5:21 – 24, 35 – 43 (ESV)

LESSON FIVE: JESUS CASTS OUT DEMONS: Mark 5:1 – 20 BACKGROUND: The children have seen Jesus’ power to forgive and to heal – showing him to be God. Today they will learn about his power over Satan – again showing that he is God. From this lesson children should learn that Jesus has the power over Satan. This power over Satan shows that he is God and again this gives us a foretaste of the Kingdom of God, in which Satan and his power has no part. Jesus is destroying the enemies of God’s Kingdom. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 5:1 – 20 LESSON: Tell this story in a suitable way. Do not scare the children unnecessarily, but let them know that this man was controlled by Satan. Please stress the following points: The evil spirits recognise Jesus. Jesus has authority over the evil spirits (Satan). Through his mercy, he delivers the man. This shows that he is God. This is a foretaste of the kingdom of God, in which Satan and evil have no

part. Jesus has begun the work of destroying the enemies of the Kingdom. Discuss the fact that at the cross, Jesus defeated Satan finally. Ultimately Satan will be punished forever and will not be in Heaven. Please, as always, remind the children that they need to believe in Jesus in order to be in heaven.

The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving

As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat he met a man who had many evil spirits in him. Because of these he lived like a wild man. When he saw Jesus he ran and fell down before him. Jesus said to the spirits “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” They begged Jesus to send them into a herd of pigs that was nearby. Jesus did this and 2000 pigs rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. When the people came to see what had happened they saw the man sitting peacefully listening to Jesus. And then the man went away and began to tell everyone what Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed. (Mark 5: 1 – 20 ESV)

Jesus cast the demons out of the man and sent them into the pigs. By doing this Jesus showed that he had power over Satan. Once again Jesus was giving us a picture of the Kingdom. Satan will not be present in the Kingdom of God and there will be no evil in God’s Kingdom.

WE KNOW THAT THE DEVIL WILL NOT BE IN HEAVEN. JESUS

DEFEATED THE DEVIL ON THE CROSS. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS STRONGER THAN THE

DEVIL? DO YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS?

LESSON SIX: JESUS TELLS STORIES OF THE KINGDOM Mark 4:1 – 20 BACKGROUND: The children have seen Jesus’ power to forgive and to heal and his power over Satan. Today we will look at a parable Jesus told. There are very few parables recorded in Mark. This one speaks of the Word of God – the gospel, and how we are to respond to it. From this lesson the children should learn that not everyone responds correctly to the Word of God. The children should be encouraged and challenged to check their own hearts and see that they are doing what God would have them do as a sign that they really are one of his children. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 4:1 – 20 LESSON: Tell this story in a suitable way. It is not as easy as the other stories, but the children should still be able to understand the imagery of the seeds and the plants. This is such an important parable for their later understanding of God's sovereignty in salvation that even though they will not grasp it all now – it is very important for them to begin learning this parable. Explain the different scenarios painted by Jesus, and in each case challenge the children, to the extent that it is appropriate to their age, to think about what is going on in their hearts. Ask them to consider why they don’t always do what God tells them in the Bible to do (pray, obey parents etc). Also stress the need for salvation amongst those who are not saved, and the need for fruit among those who are. Fruit in this case is obeying God, doing what God wants us to do, serving Him and becoming more like Jesus, through reading our Bibles and praying.

NAME:___________________________________________________________ LESSON SIX: JESUS TELLS STORIES OF THE KINGDOM Mark 4:1 – 20

The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Jesus told this story: A farmer went out to sow his seed. Some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times." (Mark 4: 1 – 20 ESV)

Don’t let your heart be like the thorny soil where the Word can’t grow because of the worries of the world.

When you hear the Word, don’t let Satan take it away, like the birds took away the seeds.

Don’t let trouble make you forget the Word, like the plants that grow in the rocky soil and which the sun burns up.

Instead, when you hear the Word of God, listen to it and do what it says. Don’t let anyone or anything distract you. Believe that Jesus died for you, love Jesus and obey him.

Then you will do the things God wants you to do, and grow fruit for Him.

Do you listen to the Bible and do what God says you must do?

LESSON SEVEN: JESUS RULES OVER NATURE: MARK 6:30 – 44 BACKGROUND: The children have seen Jesus’ power to forgive and to heal and his power over Satan. Today we will look at Jesus’ power over nature. From this lesson the children should learn that Jesus has power over nature and creation – further proving that he is God the creator – the one we must submit to. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 6:30 – 44 LESSON: Tell the story – it is quite easy to do. The points that you should try to teach are: Jesus has power over nature – he can make something out of almost nothing –

this proves to us that he really is God. If he is God then we must listen to him and obey him. Remind the children that Jesus died in their place and has taken the punishment

for their sin. Remind them of how powerful he is as seen in all these miracles and that they should not follow anyone else.

The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

One day Jesus was teaching thousands of people and it got late and there was no food nearby. The disciples asked Jesus how they should feed the people, but he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They thought Jesus wanted them to go buy food for the people. But Jesus said to them “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. (from Mark 6:30 – 44 ESV)

In this story we see that Jesus could take 5 loaves and 2 fish and multiply them to feed over 5000 people. This shows that Jesus has power over the laws of nature. There is nothing that is not subject to Jesus. By doing these miracles Jesus was showing that he is God. We need to bow before Him and accept him as our Lord and Saviour – he died for us and he is the only provision God has made for our salvation.

Do you believe that Jesus died to take

the punishment for your sin? Are you trusting in Jesus?

LESSON EIGHT: JESUS SUFFERS AND DIES AND TRIUMPHS: MARK 15:1 – 16:8 BACKGROUND: We have now completed the life of Jesus and in this lesson the children will learn about his death and resurrection. From this lesson the children should learn that Jesus, the Son of God, died for their sin, and they should be confronted with their need for a Saviour. They should also learn that he rose again – which gives us a glorious hope of eternal life. BIBLE REFERENCE: Mark 15:1 – 16:8 LESSON: There are many parts to the story of the death of Jesus, from the Last Supper to his death. Because we are having to combine the death and resurrection of Jesus into one lesson and because these children are young it is probably not necessary to dwell on the crucifixion in too much detail. You do need to teach it as is appropriate to your class – but do spend time on his resurrection. The main points to teach the children are Jesus died in our place to take the punishment for our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21)

This is all part of God’s plan (Acts 4:27-28) We have a God who lives and is not dead. Because Jesus died and rose again, we know that when we die, he will raise us back

to eternal life in heaven too – this is the glorious promise we have as Christians – (2 Cor 4:14 and many others)

Remind the children of their need of salvation, of what Jesus did for them and

encourage them to repent. Rejoice with them that when we are saved we know we have an eternity in heaven!

NAME:___________________________________________________________ LESSON EIGHT: JESUS SUFFERS AND DIES AND TRIUMPHS: MARK 15:1 – 16:8

The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In today’s story we learn how Jesus died to take the punishment for our sin – but don’t miss the amazing ending – God raised him back to life! The men who arrested Jesus asked Pilate to crucify him. So Pilate delivered Jesus to be crucified. And they crucified him. Some of Jesus’ friends buried him. On Sunday morning some of the women came to see where Jesus was buried but when they got there they saw that the stone had been rolled back. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man and they were alarmed. And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. Jesus had risen from the dead! (from Mark 15 – 16:8 ESV)

Jesus died to take the punishment for your sin and mine. God was pleased with what Jesus had done and raised him from the dead as proof of this. If we believe this, then we are Christians and children of God. The Bible teaches us that one day God will raise us up and we will live in heaven with God forever. “knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.” (2 Cor 4:14 ESV)

Do you believe that Jesus died to take the

punishment for your sin? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT

HE ROSE AGAIN? Have you said sorry to

God for your sin?
