Dear friends and parishioners of The Good Shepherd Parish –

The Advent Season continues, and we are already entering the Second Week. You will agree the time seems to be going very quickly. I hope that many of you were able to enjoy the recent online Christmas Concert that was sponsored by the Parish Knights of Columbus Council. The participants from our Parish Music Ministry are to be commended for a superb concert. It was so heartwarming to see the familiar faces and enjoy some lovely Christmas music. Well done to all the organizers and participants; and it is so good that many families will benefit from the funds raised.

An important traffic notice for everyone to be aware of will be posted prominently on our Parish Homepage, including a map indicating the routing to access our Church. There is an urgent and unplanned closure of Innes road occurring now – westbound lanes right in front of the church. This means you cannot turn onto Innes Rd. from the Bypass. You will have to go around to the west entrance to Blackburn (near the jail) to access the Hamlet. Eastbound lanes on Innes in front of the church remain unaffected. Access to our Church remains open, just a little more difficult to get to.

We learned that there was a car accident a while ago and a car hit the regulator located at that spot. Upon inspection it was realized that the pipe was extensively damaged and had to be repaired immediately for safety reasons.

With respect to the timeline for the closure, we understand that they hope to be finished by Christmas; let us pray that is possible. Please check the City of Ottawa traffic site for updates. In the meanwhile, I ask that everyone bears this information in mind when driving to the Church and allow for more time so that you can arrive well in advance of the start of Mass.

Archbishop Terrence Prendergast has concluded his service to our Archdiocese and he will be proceeding to be the Apostolic Administrator of the Hearst-Moosonee Diocese (until a permanent appointment can be made by the Pope); thus Archbishop Marcel Damphousse has begun his service to the faith family of Ottawa-Cornwall. Please hold both these faith leaders in your prayers as they continue to serve the people of God.

    Yours in Christ,

    Fr. Virgil

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Saint Alphonsus Liguori

NATIONAL PASTORAL INITIATIVE FOR LIFE AND THE FAMILY

Comforting Spirit, wrap your cloak around our disappointment, resistance, and grief. Allow our tears to fall on your shoulders, and open us to the new ways we can long for you in Advent during a pandemic. Our usual family and church traditions are not the only way to touch and taste our longing for you. Prepare the way in us so we can meet you here, in what is. Amen.

News from the Knights of Columbus Council 9005 Good Shepherd Parish

At the Second Vatican Council the church issued a document on Christian Education which establishes the right of the church to ensure every child has access to a Christian education. This begins in the home and is extended to the school system where children are taught about the sacraments.

Now the Knights take their cue from this and in collaboration with the Catholic Women’s League, we try to ensure that the First Holy Communicants of our parish have a memorable day, a day that is one of the most important in their lives. The Knights, together with the Members of the League, present rosaries to each First Holy Communicant. This is quite appropriate for we are a Marian Order where we promote and honour the Virgin Mary. After all the ‘Hail Mary' is a prayer we say from our earliest days to our final moments. Mary fixed her gaze on Christ and that is when things were accomplished.

Furthermore, we honour the children who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, and again, in conjunction with the CWL, we present them each with a Bible. Everybody likes the feel of a book but most of all we must remember that the Bible is the Word of God. There is power in the Word of God, power that has a transforming effect and demands a response. The Bible is not a newspaper or a storybook from the library. Again, everyone reads it from one's youth to one's old age. In due course the children will learn about all this.

Finally, Council 9005 would like to congratulate Br. Mike Chippa who has been appointed to sit as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council. We wish him well as he begins the work of building the Kingdom of God in that capacity.

The SSVP wooden box is now located by the entry of the hallway to receive your contributions. Heartfelt gratitude for your consideration and continued generosity to help the poor. Good Shepherd Bible Study Adapting to the times, our parish Bible Study resumed this Fall on the Zoom platform. It went so well that we are

going to continue with a new course in January: "The Sermon on the Mount”. Jesus' call to profound discipleship in the Sermon on the Mount is too often dismissed as special instructions for only the holiest

and most exceptional Christians. The Sermon on the Mount challenges us to hear the sermon once again as Christ intended it, as our call to follow him whose life illustrated its every ideal. This course helps us to hear the Sermon on the Mount as a message for each of us, a challenge that is our constant call to renewal.

The course will be offered on Wednesdays for four (4) weeks starting on Wednesday, January 20th at 10am, 1pm and 7pm. The cost of the course material is $20. The deadline to register is December 12, 2020. For further information email [email protected]

How to donate… You are asked to consider making a separate allotment in support of any of the extra collections. Donations may be made via one of the following ways:

    ! a separate cheque in any weekly envelope (specify the collection on the memo line of your cheque);

! a separate donation placed in the designated box at the Baptismal Font; or

! contact Bonnie at the Parish office (613-824-4394) to arrange an added one-time amount, for any of these worthy charities, to your Pre-Authorized Contribution.
