PASTOR’S LETTER

Dear Parishioners, There are many different opinions on the benefits vs. the detriments of wearing masks. There is no one absolute truth we can all agree on, which is problematic. We hear of the positive benefits of wearing a face mask because it will keep us and others safe from contracting or giving the coronavirus. However, there can also be some adverse effects that we may not realize. But looking at another aspect with this pandemic, I now appreciate that God created us with a face. God made our faces in His image and likeness. The beauty of the face is that it reveals our personality and uniqueness. We communicate so much with our faces. Unfortunately, today we must wear masks. The mask hides our faces, and in a way, it diminishes us. We are becoming part of a crowd, hidden and non-expressive. I feel sad for our children who cannot see the faces of those around them. I don’t know the extent of the harm it is doing. Nonetheless, it is troublesome that we are hiding our faces from one another. Hiding our faces is not in harmony with how God created us. God calls us to love one another, and one way is the expressions we show to one another. Like the song says, “The look of love is on your face.” The manner in which we look at one another is powerful. It can bring healing. Wearing a mask hides our smiles from each other. The inability to see our smiles can have a negative effect. A psychologist, Sarah Stevenson said, “each time you smile at a person, their brain coaxes them to return the favor. You are creating a symbiotic relationship that allows both of you to release feel-good chemicals in your brain, activate reward centers, makes you both attractive and increase the chances of you both living longer healthier lives.” It is said that smiling signals to others that you are friendly and likable and not a threat. Isn’t that why robbers wear masks because they are a threat? How much are we harming each other by hiding our smiles? In our relationship with God, He does not wear a mask. In Numbers 6:25-26, we read, “The Lord makes His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord lifts up His countenance on you. And gives you peace.” Psalm 102:2 says, “Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress, incline your ear to me. In the day when I call, answer me quickly.” Seeing the faces of others is seeing the beautiful person that God has created.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA

(continued - Fr. Ron ~ Pastor’s Letter) Wearing a mask can compromise our immune system and makes us more susceptible to other viruses such as the common cold. This is not to say that we should not be wearing masks. (Yes, we are told to wear our masks to keep us and others safe from contracting and giving the coronavirus.) It is just a reflection of a harmful by-product of doing so. It is like what we see when they advertise a new medication or drug on TV. It is beneficial for healing a particular ailment, but there may be harmful consequences in taking the treatment. You may find this of interest. The source is the CDC.

The number of COVID–19 related deaths to date is 173,661 and 827 deaths per day since January 20.

The number of abortions since the outbreak of COVID-19 is 497,700 which is 2,370 per day.

The virus is something that is not in our control. However, we do all that we can do to protect ourselves if we are in a vulnerable condition. Abortion, on the other hand, is something that we can end. It is in our control, but we make the death of innocent children legal. More babies die by abortion than those of the virus. Where is the uproar? We are concerned about our children going back to school. Why aren’t we more concerned about the children that are in the womb of their mothers? This country needs to repent. Maybe the little bit that we can do is to support Pro-Life organizations and Pro-Life candidates. As a country, we need to repent of this abomination and plead for God’s mercy. I will be available for confession this week on Tuesday, August 25, from 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 29, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. in the chapel or any other time by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you,

Reflection of the Week

It is not always enough to be forgiven by others, but to

also forgive ourselves.

Our Deepest Longings

As a young man, Duncan had been afraid of not having enough money, so in his early twenties, he began ambitiously building his future. Climbing the ladder at a prestigious Silicon Valley company, Duncan achieved vast wealth. He had a bulging bank account, a luxury sports car, and a million-dollar California home. He had everything he desired; yet he was profoundly unhappy. “I felt anxious and dissatisfied,” Duncan said. “In fact, wealth can actually make life worse.” Piles of cash didn’t provide friendship, community, or joy—and often brought him only more heartache.

Some people will expend immense energy attempting to amass wealth in an effort to secure their lives. It’s a fool’s game. “Whoever loves money never has enough,” Scripture insists (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Some will work themselves to the bone. They’ll strive and push, comparing their possessions with others and straining to achieve some economic status. And yet even if they gain supposed financial freedom, they’ll still be unsatisfied. It’s not enough. As the writer of Ecclesiastes states, “This too is meaningless” (v. 10). The truth is, striving to find fulfillment apart from God will prove futile. While Scripture calls us to work hard and use our gifts for the good of the world, we can never accumulate enough to satisfy our deepest longings. Jesus alone offers a real and satisfying life (John 10:10)—one based on a loving relationship that’s truly enough! ~ Winn Collier

Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE

My friend Kimberly announced that she had started a diet to lose some pounds she had put on recently. “Good!” I exclaimed. “I’m ready to start a diet too. We can be dieting buddies and help each other out. When I feel the urge to drive out and get a burger and fries, I’ll call you first.” “Great!” she replied. “I’ll ride with you.”

Saint Joseph School News

Saint Joseph School is currently enrolling for the 2020/2021 school year!

Mastering All Modalities

You might not expect a small school on a quiet side street in Wakefield, Massachusetts to be an innovator in new learning modalities, but this spring showcased some of Saint Joseph School’s greatest strengths. Educators who truly care about their students, and who teach because they consider it to be their vocation in life, sprang into action on a moment’s notice to adapt to remote learning with tremendous success. Teachers at SJS have always had a great deal of discretion in how to go about teaching the topics that need to be covered each year and they have always shown an impressive creativity and ability to adapt lessons to the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. When the world shut down in March of this year, the skills and commitment of these talented and dedicated educators were brought to bear in adapting to leverage Zoom, Google Classroom, Class Dojo, YouTube, and other platforms in their teaching. Parents at Saint Joseph School were amazed both by the way that remote learning began so quickly on the school day following the closure and by the way that it continued at the same pace as if the students were in a physical classroom. Younger students received packets, intermediate students received access to Google Classroom, and middle school students continued on with their existing Google Classrooms. Teachers began communicating with parents and students right away, using tools such as Zoom and Class Dojo in addition to email, telephone and sharing videos. Even the specialist teachers, including the librarian, art teacher, music teacher and gym teacher, reached out to students with remote lessons and ideas for enrichment. Unlike many other schools, subject matter instruction moved forward on schedule and the critical content for each grade level was covered by the time that school ended in June. Assessments were conducted regularly and grading and report cards continued as normal. Virtual lessons were complemented by hands-on projects at home, including weekly at-home science missions for middle school students and in-depth projects on the California missions and the American Revolution in the intermediate grades. Students remained connected with their teachers and other students through regular video calls. The principal held weekly Zoom calls with parents to gather input on how each class was adjusting and to foster community among parents. SJS remained deeply rooted in its Catholic values by holding several school-wide prayer events and participating in Christian Service projects such as creating artwork for patients and staff at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. These efforts helped to provide comfort and peace to students and families in a stressful and challenging time. The success of remote learning at Saint Joseph School this spring was built on the foundation of excellence that has always been the hallmark of the school since it was established in 1924. We are so pleased to be able to share this success with our Saint Joseph community which has always been so supportive of our school. We are excited to see what the future holds for students as we start in-school instruction this fall.
