The Good Newsletter St. Thomas United Church of Christ
Volume MMXIX, Issue 7&8 July & August 2019
THIS NEWSLETTER CONTAINS INFORMATION FOR JULY & AUGUST 2019!
CHURCH OFFICE HOURS
July & August Church Office Hours
Monday thru Thursday
8 am to 12 noon
Dear Church Family and Friends ~
Summer has officially arrived! A time of rest,
where schedules are a little more relaxed and the
biggest decision of the day is which flavor of ice
cream to choose.
When I was a little girl, I loved summer. I had more time in the day to read, to write and to be outdoors. I would go fishing, swimming, play street ball with other kids in the neighborhood, and create shadow people at the park.
I would also blow bubbles. I was fascinated by this activity. It was always a surprise how small or large the bubbles would get. That is, until I realized I had control of that – how much liquid was in the circle, how big the bubble wand was and how soft or hard I blew into the plastic circle.
I would also try to guess the direction of the wind: Where was the wind coming from? Where was the wind going?
Ok…. I was a weird kid.
However, now I am an adult and I always have a bottle of bubbles on hand. Why, you ask?
Because it is fun, helps reduce stress, is a lesson in mindfulness, and makes me mindful of God’s Spirit.
Just like the wind, we are unable to see God’s Spirit, but we know God’s Spirit is actively present
in our lives. We know this by witnessing the results the Spirit produces in those around us.
Blowing bubbles is an exercise in mindfulness. Allowing our distracting thoughts and feelings to ‘float’ away, helps to calm our mind. We know that our minds cling to past regrets and future worries, preventing us from being in the moment. When we are able to name the regret or worry for each bubble, and watch them ‘float’ away, our minds become calm.
Remember this childhood prayer?
Lord, I’m blowing my bubbles up to you (blow
bubbles);
I’m blowing my troubles up to you (blow bubbles).
Just like when the bubbles go, “POP!”
You can help troubles disappear and stop.
Lord, I’m blowing my bubbles up to you (blow
bubbles);
I’m blowing my troubles up to you (blow bubbles).
Amen.
With God’s Spirit encouraging you, buy a bottle of bubbles and enjoy!
Summer Blessings –
Pastor Debra

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS It seems early to think about Sunday School classes starting in the fall, especially since summer has just begun! It takes a lot of work to prepare for the new church season and we have already begun to do that! A Christian Ed letter will be distributed this summer with more information and updates. If you are interested in being a part of our Christian Ed team, which includes programs and teaching for children, youth and adults, please contact Kimberly Hartzell, Christian Ed chair. We look forward to our first time together on September 8 at our CE Back To School Breakfast! In the meantime, have a good summer!
CONFIRMATION CLASS 2019-2020 For those youth eligible for confirmation class this coming September, you should have received an introductory letter, a registration form and an information sheet in the mail. Please return the information sheet and the registration form to the church office by August 3rd. Look for more information this summer regarding a parent meeting, class covenant and retreat. For questions, contact Pastor Debra.

MUSIC MINISTRY CHOIR REHEARSALS
Sundays @ 9:45 am A Note From Chris!
Every year, in spring and summer, new life blooms anew all around us. The beauty of creation brings renewal and new Blessings daily in our lives, with new adventures and opportunities in abundance. As our music ministry grows at St. Thomas as well, you are invited and welcomed to grow with us! During the summer, we will be offering "pick-up choir" - no rehearsals during the week, just a brief warm-up at 9:45am before worship. Generally, we will be using familiar tunes, mostly from the hymnal - simply drop in and try it out as you like! In the fall, please consider joining us in choir and / or chimes. We meet in praise and fellowship in a supportive and welcoming environment - all skill levels are welcome. If you play an instrument, there is another opportunity for growth! Please join us in worship and song - see Chris Malocheski for further information or simply drop in the music room before Church!
Calling all Wanna-be and Are-already Chimers!
Our Church Chime Choir will resume rehearsals on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. beginning September 12. We welcome anyone interested in learning a truly easy musical instrument while hanging out with some fun people every week. All you need to know are primarily colors (pink, blue, and occasionally yellow) and your left hand from your right. The best part is you don’t need to sing to ding! For further information, contact Barbara Hoyle at 610-739-1190.
BETHLEHEM EMERGENCY SHELTERING 2019-2020 We are looking for volunteers for the BES new season which starts November 15 at Christ UCC. St. Thomas will be serving the second and fourth Wednesdays. We appreciate all the hard work our volunteers do to help our homeless neighbors. We especially need help with overnight shifts. If God’s Spirit is nudging you to help with this outreach, please contact Pastor Debra or Dave Peters.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Thomas meets the fifth Sunday of the month following worship. The next meeting is Sunday, September 29th. The group welcomes anyone who has an interest in knitting or crocheting, a novice or a veteran knitter/crocheter. To date, this ministry has produced more than 500 shawls! If you or someone you know could benefit from a prayer shawl,
please contact Pastor Debra or the church office.
…To all those who serve on & help with the various teams. …To all those who serve as ushers, greeters and acolytes. …To all those who are contributing to the Giving Tree. …To all those who are helping with lawn mowing, weeding & grounds keeping.
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12

Remember, you can mail your offering to the church office or bring the envelope to church before you go!
STAFF VACATIONS Chris Malocheski will be on vacation July 7 – 13.
Pastor Debra will be on vacation July 21 – 27. Please call the church office for pastoral care.
Karen Jaindl will be on vacation July 28 – August 3. The church office will be open usual
