We Invite All to Experience Grace!“From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” --John 1:16.Last month I wrote about the importance of inviting others to share in all the wonderful things Bethany has to offer. In our rapidly changing culture, we can no longer assume that everyone we meet already knows what Christianity is really all about. Nor can we assume that non-members would feel comfortable just showing up at Bethany without someone willing to invite and accompany them. With this in mind, Bethany’s “Invitation and Welcome Team” is asking all Bethany members to keep their eyes open for people they feel might be open to

receiving a gracious, unforced invitation to “come and see” (John 1:46) what’s happening at our church. On the surface, we are simply inviting friends, acquaintances and even fellow church members we haven’t seen for a while to join us for certain special events (a.k.a. Invitation Opportunities) that we believe might be of interest to the general public. On a deeper level, we are hoping and praying that these “introductory invitations” might inspire those who come to learn more about our church and the message we proclaim. Our ultimate goal is to invite all people to experience the amazing grace of God in a lively, caring, Christ-centered community. But while we can make this invitation in a variety of ways (advertising, press releases, social media, etc.), the most successful invitations are usually made face-to-face, one person or family at a time. That’s why your readiness to invite some-one is so important!Bethany is by no means a “perfect” church. Like every other congregation, we are a community of forgiven sinners. At the same time, we are a very blessed and gifted community. We have a rich Lutheran tradition and a central location in Rice Lake. We have a wide variety of relational/friendship groups as well as a good number of spiritual growth and service opportunities for people of all ages. But, the best thing we offer is an opportunity to meet an amazing God, who comforts, inspires, forgives and empowers us, so that we all might live the richer, fuller life God wants us to live.Lutherans believe that the news of God’s great love for ordinary people is too good to keep to ourselves! When an opportunity to make an invitation comes your way, say a little prayer and then say, “Would you like to come to Bethany with me?”In Christ, Pastor Grant AasengP.S. Speaking of invitations, consider inviting a friend to join you on Saturday, October 8 as we load a Lutheran World Relief semi-trailer with quilts and health-kits for needy people in Africa and other underdeveloped coun-tries. We start loading around 8:00 a.m. and will be done by noon. You can come for just an hour or the full morn-ing. We will have coffee and donuts to share. You don’t need to be a Lutheran (or even a Christian!) to participate. I can almost guarantee: You will go home feeling good!

A Message from Pastor Grant

Prospective Member OrientationHave you thought about joining Bethany Lutheran Church? If so, you are invited to attend the Prospective Mem-ber Orientation on Sunday, October 2 at 9:30 a.m., hosted by Pastor Aaseng in the Conference Room adjacent to the Church Office. This orientation will fill you in on what is required to become an official “member” of Bethany. At Bethany, membership is viewed as a commitment to participate in and support our mission to INVITE all, GROW in faith and GO to share God’s love. The pastor’s class “Growing in Faith” (beginning October 9) is highly recommended for anyone who is considering membership. By attending the class you are under no obligation to join. Come check it out and see if membership is right for you! If you are unable to attend the orientation, please e-mail Pastor Aaseng ([email protected]) or call his cell number, 715-205-8789, and he will arrange to meet with you personally.

Women of the ELCA News Written by: Marlene Thurs

Thankoffering Weekend is October 1-2 and is going to be an ex-citing, faith-inspiring weekend. All services will be led by women who will be encouraging everyone to “Act Boldly.” This theme is based on the verses from Luke 10:38-42. The message, presented by Gail Weber and Amy Brekke, will enlighten all on the modern day Mary and Martha. You will want to be a part of this service!WELCA Board met on August 24 and discussed plans for the upcoming year for several events including Advent lunches, the fall Lefse Workshop and special events to celebrate the 500th an-niversary of the Reformation in 2017. Watch for details through-out the year. The Retired Educators Luncheon was a huge success. Thanks to Paula Rogstad who is the new “head cook” for these events. I want to encourage everyone to offer their support when events are scheduled; this is a big job and always goes more smoothly if there are many hands to help.Continue to support and pray for the WELCA Board as they work to carry out the mission of the women of the church. A happy fall to all!

CHURCH HEALTH TEAM October Update

Small Group Startup

And away we go!The Church Leadership Team has been working for several months to identify small groups already in place at Bethany and encourage the beginning of additional groups. On September 18, we celebrated both the “old” and the “new” small groups by commissioning the leaders of all small groups. All parish-ioners were encouraged to stop by the new Small Group display in the narthex where a directory, individual small group cards and sign up sheets were available. One new small group has already begun meeting. Members of Bethany as well as friends who reside at Brentwood are currently getting to-gether weekly. So far 10 people are getting together to share their faith journey with each other. That group collectively represents more than 800 years of life experience and they are a testimony for all of us that it is never too late to become involved in a community that shares their faith and learn! This initiative is ongoing and continual. Many of the groups will wel-come new faces at any time and contact people have been identified in both the directory and the kiosk cards. Questions and comments are welcomed, as are suggestions for oth-er topics or categories in the formation of new small groups. Church Leadership team members are: Carol Hakala - Chair, Pastor Grant, Kevin Jacobson, Jan Wilking, Tina Henningsen, Pauli Storm and Sue Hildebrand.
