Love Without Limits“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength; and your neighbor as yourself.” --Luke 10:27

Earlier this summer, Ruth and I were privileged to enjoy a week with ten other Bethany mem-bers at Holden Village, a unique, one-of-a-kind Lutheran Retreat Center nestled in the Cas-cade Mountains of central Washington. Holden has an amazing array of activities to choose from: great hiking, music and the arts, Bible study, evening worship and stimulating lectures

on just about everything, as well as plenty of time for relaxed conversation, ice cream cones and an occasional nap.

The week we attended, one of the major presenters was Jacqueline Bussie, Professor of Inter-Faith Studies at Con-cordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She recently published a wonderful book, Love Without Limits, which offers a number of inspiring stories about people she has known who were able to “love across distances” of race, disability, religion and culture. But, the story behind her book is even more compelling. The original publisher refused to print some of her stories because they were considered too controversial for a mainstream audience. Having written a book about “Love Without Limits,” Professor Bussie discovered that a broad section of American society is not ready for the kind of love Jesus once practiced and preached.

If you get a chance to read her book, please do. At the very least, you might do an internet search on “Jacqueline Bussie, Censored.” At great expense to her family, Professor Bussie paid the original publisher a large sum of mon-ey to recover her rights to print the book as she intended. The book’s subtitle: “Jesus’ Radical Vision for Love with No Exceptions” is surprisingly similar to the Bethany Church Council’s visions for “2020 and Beyond.”

We envision Bethany as an intergenerational, caring, Christ-centered community, where all are ac-cepted and affirmed (with no exceptions!)—a place where new people are celebrated as gifts, and all are empowered to join in God’s work of bringing Christ’s love and light to the world.

Currently, a Bethany Task Force on “Growing an Inclusive Church” is exploring what it means to live out such a vision, particularly in regards to the LGBTQ community—a community that has come to expect that they are not welcome in most churches. Along with this Task Force, I encourage you to pray and contemplate what it means to follow Jesus in practicing “Love Without Limits.”

In Christ,Pastor Grant Aaseng

Announcements & Opportunities

Cleaning Service/Maintenance UpdateIf you haven’t heard yet, Bethany has switched to using a cleaning service instead of having a custodian on staff. ServiceMaster is currently con-tracted to clean Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Joel Rogers from Division of Vocational Rehabilitation has also been cleaning for us a few hours a week. Handyman, Harold Ely, comes at least one day per week to do any needed projects. Please let the office know if you see anything around the church that needs attention. What does this mean for groups using the church? It means that we are asking EVERYONE to make sure that the areas they use are picked up and put back to the way they were found. Please clean up any messes made, put away any equipment used and leave the room in a good condi-tion for the next person or group. We are blessed with a beautiful facility! Please help us keep Bethany looking it’s best, because when you are at Bethany, you are at home.

Memorials & Gifts Thank You NotesI wish to thank you all for your concern and prayers. They are working real hard to get me will and back on my feet. God’s Blessings ~ Sandie Anderson

We can’t begin to thank you enough for your generous donation. Luther Park, over the last few years, has experienced amazing growth in numbers and min-istry. This growth only happens with God’s great grace and your help, and for that we are deeply grateful.Thank you so much for your support and prayers as we share Christ to almost 2000 children this summer! In Christ’s Service, Keith Newman, Executive Ministry Director

I wanted to write to let you know how impressed my volunteers and I were with the youth group that came from your church and helped us. Their efforts made sodding and seeding at our home build go significantly faster than it would have without the extra hands. The leader of the trailer cleaning told me both in person and in a text how GREAT they were. Due to their efforts, more than just power washing got done, which was a wonderful bonus for the homeowner. The young adults were so willing to do whatever was needed and to help any way they could; they were a tremendous help. Their parents and your community are to be commended for raising such wonderful young adults who contribute so much. Thank you for all your support of their trip! Sincerely, Megan Dietz, Habitat for Humanity Restore/Office Manager

The family of Orlen & Pauline Eidahl thanks Pastor Grant, Pastor Luci, the staff and members of Bethany Lutheran for your prayers, care and all the cards of blessing in the death of our granddaughter, Tanya O’Brien. It meant so much to us.

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12

Door County AdventureThis year’s high school Door County adventure was more than just taking a camping trip. Our group of seven youth (Ellie Antonson, Sarah Buchli, Cali King, Jonathan Nelson, Emma Panasuk, Alexa Robarge, Mikaela Ro-barge) and two adults (Craig Antonson, Angie Buchli) had the opportunity to explore Door County and Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful State Parks. We developed a new sense of awareness of God in our everyday lives and the beautiful earth He created. We built community as we served, explored and learned while living together in Christian fellowship. We served in several different ways on this trip. First we served each other by working together to prepare meals for the group and maintain our campsites. Second, we served the community by working with Habitat for Humanity Door County in Sturgeon Bay. We were tasked with preparing the ground, laying sod and seeding a yard. It was estimated to take us all of Tuesday and possible part of Wednesday. Our group had amazingly hard workers and we completed the task in only three hours! Tuesday evening we helped serve the Loaves & Fishes meal in Sister Bay. This meal is a monthly service ministry that provides physical and spiritual nourishment to all it touches in response to Matthew 25:37-50. This was an awesome event. They asked if the kids could come back every month. The people really enjoyed visiting with our youth and the youth got to hear their stories in return. On Wednesday, we returned to Sturgeon Bay to work again with Habitat. Our project for the day was to help pow-erwash and clean up the outside of a mobile home trailer in preparation of some repairs that need to be done. Once again, our group finished in record time in around two hours. We were so proud of how hard our kids worked! Everyone returned refreshed, renewed and reconnected from this awesome outdoor adventure. We are working on a date to share about our trip with the congregation. The youth would love to share their experience with you. Thank you for all off the wonderful support from our Bethany family!

How about joining our Prayer Chain Ministry? You can be on the more traditional phone chain or if you prefer to e-mail, you can be a “Prayer Warrior” through the email chain! Just con-tact the church office ([email protected] or 715-234-9028) and sign up with your e-mail ad-dress or phone number today. Let’s bring more “pray-ers” to-gether and touch lives. Sign up today and share your gift of time!

Bethany CaresThe Community Care Coordina-tors organizes and provides sup-port to members in need of a little help. If you know someone with a temporary need, please contact the church office at 715-234-9028 so we can help.
