We have been talking a lot about hospitality and caring for

our neighbors in recent days. One way Christ Church does

this is through the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. As you

know, many people are struggling to get by in our

community. With cuts in services and support, life is more

Message from Allison

Christ Church September 2012 Pastoral Letter

The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund helps to provide a tangible sign of hope

and love. When people call the church for assistance, I try to assess the need. I

often point them to the Town Office to see if there is General Assistance

available for a variety of needs using state funds. Another key resource is

heating assistance, food pantry, grocery vouchers, and clothing through the

Church Community Outreach Fuel Program. Often times I serve as a social

worker, looking for avenues of support. But sometimes there are gaps and that

is where we as a church can make the most difference. Many folks have

significant transportation struggles—trying to keep a car on the road so they

can get to work. Sometimes we work with the town to prevent someone from

being homeless until a more stable situation can be found. Sometimes people

are traveling from one place to another and get stuck. Recently a family asked

for help with school supplies and clothing for a student who recently came to

America from Central America. There are other gaps for people who have

become disabled through poor health and physical problems that need aid until

state or federal benefits begin or recover enough to rejoin the work force. We

have served about six to eight individuals and families in the last nine months.

There are envelopes in pews if you would like to contribute to this ministry to

our neighbors and be sign of love along their way.

Blessings,

Allison

New Sunday School Program Beginning…. Calling all children, youth and families! We invite you to join us for a

new school year to grow in your faith and make a difference in our church and wider community.

The first Sunday of each month, families will worship together. Oct. 7th is World Communion Sunday, Nov. 4th is All Saints Day, and Dec. 2nd is the beginning of Advent, with communion. Childcare is available for the youngest children.

For the rest of the month, multi-age Sunday School classes will be held after the Children’s Sermon, with a theme and interactive activities, as well as possibilities for community service. Nursery care is also available.

In October, the topic will be “The Role of Youth in Community Service.” In November, youth and children will focus on “Stewardship of our Earth” which will address poverty, resources, and making a difference. In December, they will explore the theme “Making Room” for the Advent season.

On November 18th youth can participate after church in packing the food baskets for the Holiday Food Basket program to help those in need in our community.

Come and take part; learn and grow in your faith; have fun, and make a difference in our community!

Cabinet News

I would like to share with you all the exciting activities that are going on and

encourage you to think about getting involved in something that interests you.

Rev. Allison and the Membership Committee have been working hard during

the summer to update the print materials for a New Members packet. Allison

reports that the first group will be taken into membership in October. Others,

who are going away for the winter, will be offered membership in the spring.

A Christian Education meeting was held to plan the programs for our youth.

We have teachers who are inspired to impart the Holy Spirit through

activities geared to helping others. The first session will be held on Sunday

October 14th

, and will be facilitated by Jenn Clapp and Allan Davis.

Blessings to Hannah Engel for providing loving care for our youngest children

each Sunday.

Rhoda Frederick and Hannah Engel are ready to accept your donations for the

Fall Rummage Sale on October 13th

.

Plans are being made for the Pine Cone Fair and Silent Auction on December

17th

.

The Cabinet is making plans to hold one or two congregational meetings with

Jan Davis, District Superintendant of UMC, and Darren Morgan, Associate

Pastor of UCC, to discuss the process of searching for a settled pastor process.

We will be starting the Search process in 2013 and will be looking for people

to serve on a Search Committee. Finding a new pastor is going to require the

participation of the whole church, and I ask you to give prayerful

consideration to what your role might be.

Yours in Faith,

FOCUS ON HUNGER

WEDDING CAKE HOUSE TOURS The Wedding Cake House on Summer Street in Kennebunk will be open to the public for guided tours from

September 15 through October 15. All profits will go toward hunger relief in York County. Our local Church

Community Outreach Services food pantry will benefit from this event and some of our Board of Directors will

be working as tour guides.

The Wedding Cake House, also known as the George Washington Bourne house, is probably the most

photographed house in the state of Maine. In the late Federal style, the house is filled with period furnishings and

paintings, and features some beautiful period architectural features.

The tours will run daily from 10AM to 4PM with the last tour of the day beginning at 3:30PM. Admission is

$10.00 per person.

This is an opportunity to see something you’ve always wondered about and a way to help your York County

neighbors in need. We hope to see you there.

Save the Date: Panel and small group discussion on "Marriage in Maine" Sunday, Oct. 21st, 2-4 pm at Christ Church.

Mainers will go to the polls on Nov. 6th and be asked to vote on marriage equality. How does our Christian faith view marriage? What are the values of marriage? What does the Bible say? How is God still speaking about marriage?

Join us for this opportunity to reflect on your faith, to ask questions, to listen to diverse viewpoints, and to delve more deeply into this issue facing our state and community.

Hebrews reminds us.

One meaningful part of the service will be a slideshow of photos of those whom we love and are

remembering. Please drop off or email a photo to Jane King in the church office by Oct. 24. The email address is

[email protected]. Please feel free to submit a photo of someone important to you who died in the past or

the past year and a lighting of candles for all of the saints of our lives.

Hope you can be there and invite a friend for this very important day!

Church Notes

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Caring Unlimited, and the mothers and children they serve, we thank and salute you for your

continuing generosity in support of the Annual Backpack & Back-to-School Supplies Drive.

We are happy to report that, by working together, the members of St. David's Episcopal Church, Holy Cross

Lutheran Church, Trinity Episcopal Chapel and St. Ann's Episcopal Church were able to supply a new backpack,

along with grade-appropriate school supplies, to every child in need -- those presently living in shelter, and those

living in the most financially vulnerable households, who are also under the protective umbrella of Caring

Unlimited.

Also, thanks to a monetary donation from Christ Church, the neediest boys and girls were able to return to school

outfitted with a new pair of sneakers.

Normally we do not publish pictures of the children because of privacy and safety concerns. However, the mother

of the little girl in the attached photo gave us permission to do so. I think her smile says it all.

Thanks a million for all your help.

Gratefully,
