We are well into the process of planning the details for the Clubhouse refurbish-ment. At this time it looks like the Ballroom will be unavailable for any meetings or events from Monday, May 8th through October. As the work proceeds these schedules may be further refined. We will publish a more comprehensive schedule of room availability as we get closer to beginning the work.

A big Thank You to the homeowners who paid the assessment in full. We actually received full payments from more than 100 homeowners. As promised, we will hold the drawing from the first 100 homeowners for the winners of the 4 pair of season tickets to next year’s Show Series at the April Board Meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, April 12th in the Ballroom. This was moved to Wednesday night to accommodate homeowners who will be observing Passover.

We have also established a Planning Committee to help implement our strategic plan. While the initial focus will be on recreational offerings, the committee will focus on the entire spectrum of activities and amenities for Buena Vida. Our Stra-tegic Plan was created to insure that Buena Vida remains a top tier property among active adult communities in Palm Beach County and that we maintain our compet-itive position in the market. We have received a number of applications for the committee and we will appoint the initial members of the committee at the April Board meeting.

To our friends and neighbors who start to migrate north as spring begins, we wish you safe travels and look forward to welcoming you back home later in the year.

Our April Workshop meeting will be held on Wednesday morning, April 5th at 9am and the regular monthly Board meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, April 12th at 7pm. Both meetings are held in the Ballroom.

MESSAGE FROM THE gatehouse

By: John Brandofino

Keeping the Buena Vida community secure and safe is always a priority to me. With that in mind, I would like to touch on our alternate side of the street parking which manages vehicles parked on the streets in our community. Alternate side parking on-ly pertains to the streets that have houses on both sides. It does not apply for our cul-de-sacs. Streets that have homes only on one side, vehicles are to park in the street, on the side that has the houses. At all times, vehicles parked on the streets in our commu-nity should be facing in the direction of which traffic flows. ODD months (January, March, May, July, September, November) ODD side. EVEN months (February, April, June, August, October, December ) EVEN side. Odd and even side parking is determined by the residential numerical addresses! There is no parking on the streets between 1:00 am - 6:00 am!

MESSAGE FROM THE PROPERTY MANAGER

By: , LCAM

While driving through the community I have witnessed vehicles not coming to a com-plete stop at stop signs, near misses and too many vehicles traveling faster than our posted speed limit of 30 MPH. These vehicles include vendors as well as residents and their guests. The Management Office will continue to reach out to those vendors who fail to obey our traffic rules. We respectfully request that all residents and their guests heed this reminder for their own safety and the safety of your neighbors. Un-fortunately, accidents do happen and while we cannot control the actions of another driver, we can choose to be proactive with our own safety and take a few extra sec-onds to stop completely and look both ways.

Thank you to all of the homeowners that have had their roof cleaned! You can cer-tainly see what a difference this maintenance has made in the overall look of our com-munity. Your neighbors, Board of Directors and Management Staff truly appreciate your efforts!

BVPlayers- Music Makes memories

By: Barbara Rockoff

The BV Players 7th musical production, written by Barbara Rockoff, and produced and directed by Barbara Rockoff and Kathleen Brodkin, highlighted music spanning from the 1940's all the way to present day, and some memorable comedy as well. Each dec-ade offered up its own style of music and comedy. But one thing is for sure, no matter what the decade, music soothes the soul, and comedy warms the heart. Thank you to Jerry Rockoff, working as stage hand and Larry Steinik as our videographer. Behind the scenes working our sound, was Barbara Zenker, and our lighting people, Tony Cafarel-la, Barry Raucher, and Cecil Wray deserve a big thank you. Our wonderful musical di-rector, Allie Shernoff, gave us guidance and encouragement. Photographs

Tennis News With Tim Brielmaier

Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying your tennis. I walk the tennis courts each

morning, and leave a message on my telephone extension 214 concerning the court

and weather situation by 7:45am. Please remember to check the doors to the tennis

courts for signs indicating reservations, and court closings. Also, when you finish

playing, please pickup your ball cans, water bottles etc. and remember to take down

the score sign. If the sign remains up, it interferes with the sprinklers. Tip for April:

The most important thing you can do for your tennis is to keep your balance, and try

to make contact with the ball in front and to the side of your body. Regardless of your

technical ability, making contact with the ball comfortably and in balance will help

everyone. I still have plenty of times available for lessons and clinics. Please contact

me if you are interested in any type of lesson. I will be reaching out to children and

adults outside the Buena Vida community to try to increase participation in our tennis

programs. If you have friends, or friend’s children or grandchildren that are interest-

ed in getting into a tennis clinic or lessons, please contact me.

As our Snowbirds prepare to leave paradise for the rigors of their northern climes, the

Tennis Committee is planning two final events. On Thursday. April 6 at 6:30 pm we

will host a Mixed Doubles Round Robin. It will be followed by a wine and great food

reception in the clubhouse. Then on Tuesday evening, May 2 at 6:30 pm we will

have a resident/guest round robin. While guests are not required, they will be enthu-

siastically welcomed. Tennis players are always on the lookout for new competition.

The costs for each event is $20.00 for player/eaters, $15.00 for non-playing guests, and

$10.00 for play only. Please register and pay at the Spa Desk.

DISCO PARTY 7 PM

Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Golf & Social Club

By: Paul Bunce

The year ended with our Annual Dinner Party at Oli’s Fashion Cuisine Restaurant on

January 18th. Following several outings during a successful season, the members and

their spouses enjoyed a 3-course dinner finale including appetizer, entrée and dessert

w/coffee or tea. After a greet and mingle at a ‘happy hour’ of wine and cocktails, the

members found their tables decorated with ballooned centerpieces, sleeves of balls,

tees and chocolate nuggets.

As the evening proceeded and in-between courses, raffles were drawn and the lucky

winners received movie tickets, sleeves of golf balls, dinner gift cards and rounds of

golf at the local courses. Many winners prevailed, too many to count and too many to

remember.

As starters, calamari and flat breads were served followed by a choice of salmon, short

ribs, pasta or chicken parmigiana. Dessert featured a family style bowl of chocolate

cake and vanilla ice cream.

Everyone shared a wonderful and enjoyable time. Deserving thanks must be extended

to Oli’s staff and for the generous gifts donated by Palm Beach County Okeeheelee

Golf Course, Palm Beach National, the Wellington Theater and Romeo’s, and of

course, to the members of the club for their support throughout 2016. We all look for-

ward to a successful 2017 season.

New members are always welcome. Join the fun and comradery. For information, con-

tact Marty Stein at [email protected] or call 561-333-8442.

Musings From The Bald Wimp

“The Cramp” - By: Neil Goldman

Hello Buena Vidans:

Since training senior citizens in South Florida I have observed a phenomena that I rarely saw in California, the DREADED CRAMP particularly in the legs. In Los An-geles my clients were generally younger and more of them were athletic, therefore, the cramp was generally caused by an overexertion of the muscle while exercising. How-ever, in the senior population the circumstances are generally more complex. Obvi-ously, an individual who has significant circulatory problems or nervous system is-sues will be more prone to experience severe cramping while using and stressing their skeletal muscles. However, most of us older folk are NOT in that category.

Typically, what I have observed comes from these easy to correct deficiencies.

INADEQUATE HYDRATION – as a general guideline an adult male should consume at least 60 ounces of net fluid per day. However, drinks such as coffee, tea and alco-hol act as diuretics and cause water loss. Therefore if you drink 10 ounces of coffee and a 5 ounce glass of wine during the day, you MUST drink 75 ounces of fluid (water, juice, milk, etc.) to achieve your net 60 ounces. If you are taking an aerobics or weight training class or doing aerobics exercise on a treadmill, etc. for an hour, think in terms of consuming a liter of fluid (drink 1/3 before, 1/3 during and 1/3 immedi-ately after).

TRACE ELEMENT DEFICIENCY – if you DO NOT hydrate properly you are well on your way to running into a trace element problem. As you sweat and urinate your body will eliminate trace elements such as magnesium, potassium and salt which will wreak havoc internally. Obviously, a balanced diet will include the necessary trace elements and proper hydration will keep your core temperature in line and allow the body to function normally. I always make sure that my diet includes a banana which is rich in potassium before I do a big workout.

INSUFFICIENT STRETCHING BEFORE EXERCISING – since very few people know how to properly stretch and most are too impatient to do it, this is the hardest problem to correct. Before exercising you must do movement to circulate your blood and raise your body core temperature. Muscles that have been warmed will stretch easier. Think of a thick rubber band that is hard to stretch. If you squeeze it and massage it in your hands, it will warm up and become easier to stretch, your muscles are the same way. Once you have warmed your body up, perform the activities that you are planning to do but at a reduced level of exertion to get the muscles ready. Examples, light weight before heavy weight, a practice swing with the bat, club or racquet before hitting the ball for real, jog before you run, etc.

The Women’s Club

By: Alice Bloom

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2017 was again a successful dinner dance hosted by the

BV Women’s Club. Green shamrock “footprints” led attendees to the welcome table

to select their table seating cards. As they entered the gaily decorated Ballroom, they

were warmly greeted by Board members and servers who provided them with a wel-

come glass of either Bailey’s Irish Cream or Irish whiskey. The big screen projected

colorful scenes of the Emerald Isle landscape and castles.

The tables were laden with snack mix, potato knishes, salads, Irish soda bread and

corn bread to pique the appetite for the main course of traditional Irish food of

Corned beef, cabbage and potatoes or Salmon. The servers brought the food, which

was plentiful and delicious, to the tables.

From the moment the guests entered the Ball-

room to the sounds of Irish music, our guests

were entertained by Bill De Renzo, our DJ.

Shortly thereafter dance music began and the

dance floor was crowded with lively dancers.

Bill did not disappoint by playing a wide

range of music from cha cha’s, merengue, ro-

mantic ballads, electric slide and all got to-

gether on the dance floor for “That’s What

Friends Are For” to top off the evening.

Everyone agreed that our caterer, Abe, and

his staff did an outstanding job. The Wom-

en’s Club Board extends special thanks to

Abe and his staff who helped to make this

event a success.

Guests participated in raffles with prizes of restaurant gift certificates, theater tickets

and other prizes.

To all members and non-members who attended the event and continue to support

the Women’s Club, we wish to express our sincere thanks for making the evening a

success. The Club looks forward to hosting future events for all to enjoy.

Wine Club

The season finale of the Wine Club's tasting and educational sessions is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, in the Clubhouse beginning at 7 P.M., and the theme will be Summer Sippings.

Some of the wines will be rosés, usually pink, with a floral scent, and light on the pal-ate. Others are likely to be of a similar character. As usual, there will be foods to com-plement the wines. The kitchen is under the supervision of Susan Kampel and Gwen Marcus, who have turned culinary tricks in the tiny space. And for that reason, at-tendance at the Wine Club event will be limited to the first 50 people who sign up with checks ($25 a person for wine and food, $15 for partner food only) to the Spa Desk by Tuesday, April 18.

The March meeting proved one of the highlights of the season. The theme was ko-sher wines, with Passover approaching, and Jodie and Jeff Morgan, founders and owners of Covenant Winery in California, appeared via Skype to explain how they got into the business, what determines what wine is kosher and what kind of wines they produce. Among the 14 wines Covenant produces in California is a red wine, a cabernet sauvignon, that is priced at $150. Covenant also sells lower-priced wines, and further information is available at their web site.

The Morgans are the authors of several cookbooks, including the Ruby Tuesday Cookbook, the Dean and DeLuca Cookbook and "The Covenant Kitchen," which has recipes for the modern kosher kitchen and recipes and other information about ko-sher preparations. The books are available from Amazon.

Jeff Morgan was a freelance contributor to the Long Weekly section of the New York Times before joining Wine Spectator magazine as their West Coast correspondent and taster of kosher wines.

30

APRIL 2017

Current Events Group

On April 3, the first Monday of the month, those interested in current events will have a chance to discuss the changes proposed for the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare. The meeting will be held in the Library at 4 P.M. and all fact-based views are welcome.

At this writing, the Republican bill has passed two committees in the House of Rep-resentatives but has met fierce opposition from some elements of the Republican party and little support, if any, from Democrats.

One part of the bill shifts Medicaid funding to the states, eliminates a surtax on high earners, drops insurance coverage for mental illness and, according to the nonparti-san Congressional Budget Office, would have a significant impact on costs for older Americans while shaving the Federal budget deficit.

No cost to attend the discussion.

Books and Authors Group

The April selection for book lovers will be "Cruel Beautiful World," a novel by Caro-line Leavitt. This is her 11th published novel. This book is set in the early 1970's against the specter of the Manson girls, when the peace and love movement began to turn ugly. It is the story of a runaway teenager's disappearance and her sister's quest to discover the truth.

Ms. Leavitt's many essays, stories, book reviews and articles have appeared in Psy-chology Today, the New York Times Book Review, People magazine and numerous other publications.

The date is Tuesday, April 25, in the Clubhouse at 3:30 P.M. and Ms. Leavitt will be joining the discussion via Skype from her home office in Hoboken, N.J.

As usual, there is no charge. Reservations encouraged at the Spa Desk so that ade-quate seating can be arranged.

The March meeting heard from Dan Barry, author of the nonfiction "Boys in the Bunkhouse," a tale of almost unbelievable servitude by a turkey processing company using retarded adults as labor and paying them $60 a month plus room and board in filthy conditions. All true.

THE B.V. MEN’S CLUB

By: Paul H. Fried, Secretary

The BV Men’s Club began its March 12 monthly breakfast with President Dennis Hart welcoming 68 members in the Buena Vida Ballroom. Dennis announced 3 new members: Peter Price, Robert Bochner, and Thomas Scotto to our organization. Dennis also thanked the membership for their support and assistance with all the activities and events we organize during the course of the year. Congratulations to our March raffle win-ners: Marty Schwartz and Robert Bochner. Dennis

thanked program committee member Steve Kane for arranging our guest speaker for the month of March and then introduced our distinquished guest speaker for the day: Mr. Joseph E. Spinnato. For the past thirty plus years, Joseph E. Spinnato has been directly involved in the bet-terment of life in and for New York. In his current capacity as President and Chief Ex-ecutive Officer of the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc., he has brought to this venerable association a new image and direction. He has moved the one hundred thirty eight year old organization into a more active and visible role in the city. The Association represents more than 280 hotels, employs more than 50,000 people and generates billions of dollars in revenues for the city.

In 1982, then Mayor Edward I. Koch appointed Mr. Spinnato as the Fire Commissioner of New York City. As Fire Commissioner, a position he held for over 5 years prior to his ap-pointment to the Hotel Association, Spinnato was responsible for the fire protection of the city and its 7 1/2

million residents. Before joining the Fire Department, Mr. Spinnato served as First Assistant to the Special Prosecutor for Nursing Homes for 5 years. Previously, he was at the Nassau County District Attorney's Office for 10 years serv-ing as First Assistant to the District Attorney and also Chief of the Rackets Bureau.

Mr. Spinnato's humanitarian interests are extensive and varied. He is a Knight of Malta, served as the Lieutenant of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of the Eastern Lieutenancy for 5 years, and in 2007 was appointed to the Grand Magis-terium of Holy Sepulchre in Rome. He is also a member of the Cardinal's Committee for Charity, and Board of Direc-tors of the Big Apple Greeters, Inc. He received the 1989 Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Com-mittee; in 1990 he received the Cardinal's Award from His Eminence John Cardinal O'Connor; in 1992 he received the Jerusalem Founders Man of the Year Award from the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusa-lem; and in 2001 he received the International Brotherhood

Award from Bikor Cholim Hospital, also in Jerusalem. In 1987 Mr. Spinnato received an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law Degree from St. John's University, and in 1991 Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Mr. Spinnato to the Board of Governors of the New York Convention Center Operating Corporation (Jacob K. Javits Convention Center), a position he still holds. Mr. Spinnato also served as Chair-man of the Board of Directors of the New York Convention Center Operating Corpo-ration under Governor George E. Pataki. A quintessential New Yorker, Spinnato was born in Queens and attended public schools there until he entered LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale, New York. He graduated St. John's University in Hillcrest and received his law degree from the University of Miami Law School in Coral Gables, Florida. Mr. Spinnato is married to the former Madeline Romano, a graduate of St. John’s Uni-versity at Hillcrest. They have one daughter, Janine, who graduated from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and from St. John's University School of Law. Her husband, Sean P. Christian Heritage Club

By: Jane Giannattasio

Besides bringing Christianity to a pagan Ireland, St Patrick is also its patron saint and March 17 is the day we honor him. This year we met at a restaurant in Wellington. It was noisy and crowded, and any other night that might have been unpleasant, but this night the 16 of us were having too much fun in this Irish-themed restaurant with or without alcoholic beverages to notice.

Not all of our get-togethers are based on themes or religious events but the themes just add another dimension. Here’s what we have coming up in the spring:

April 9, Palm Sunday, potluck supper in the screened porch.

The presentation concerns touched all of us.

Hadassah Happenings

By: Dee Klein

Our chapter of Hadassah had a lovely Lunch N Play on Tuesday, February 21st. Over 80 people attended and the day was enjoyed by everyone. See the pictures of some of the groups playing various games. A big thank you to Barbara Rockoff, our Fundrais-ing Vice President and her committee for all their hard work and making the day so special. Also thanks to everyone who attended and helped support Stem Cell Research through the Hadassah Medical Organization.

We had a wonderful speaker on March 22-- Marjorie Gottlieb Wolfe, who spoke about "The Humor of Judge Judy". We will include photos in next month's newsletter.

This month our meeting will be on Wednesday April 26 at 10:00 am in the morn-ing. The speaker will be: Walter Klein. He will share his memories as a child on the Kinder Transport. At 6 years old, he was sent by his parents to England with his sis-ters to save their lives as part of the Kinder Transport. His story is quite rivet-ing and should be fascinating to hear. Please join us for this inspiring speaker. Flyers will be available with all the details about signing up at the Spa Desk for this event. A light breakfast will be served. For more information, contact our Program Vice Presi-dent, Sheila Heller at 641-6701.

Hadassah Book Club -- We will not have a Book Club meeting in April. Our next book club will be on Wednesday, May 17th at 1:30 pm in the library. The book to be discussed is: "Journey from the Land of No" - a girlhood caught in revolutionary Iran by Roya Hakakian. This is an enthralling non-fiction story of a unique and tragic time in the history of the family and the ancient country Hakakian loves. For more infor-mation, please contact our dynamic moderator, Linda Shapiro at 791-2460.
