Our pets provide so much for us -- unconditional love, companionship and laughter. All of these things enhance our lives and help to make us happier and healthier; they deserve the same from us. It can be easy to get caught up in our hectic lives but they de-pend on us to take care of them since they can’t make those choices on their own. It is important to provide them with a healthy diet, exercise, a good environment, regular check-ups and love to keep them feeling their best. Those of us who own pets know they make us happy. But a growing body of scientific research is showing that our pets can also make us healthy, or healthier.A recent US study by the American Heart Association (AHA) has suggested owning a pet (and in particular dogs) leads to having a healthier heart. In a study of more than 5,200 adults in the US, dog owners engaged in more walking and physical activity than non-dog owners, and were 54% more likely to get the recommended level of physical activity. The companionship offered by pets is also believed to help those with cardiac problems, with the study summary suggesting there’s a positive benefit on cholesterol levels, blood pres-

sure, reduced obesity and to the body’s reaction to stress.

More health benefits? The study by the AMA isn’t the first piece of research to suggest the health benefits of owning a pet. Other research has also suggested pet ownership can help protect against respiratory infection, lower stress in the workplace, calm blood pressure and boost self-esteem. That helps explain the increasing use of animals — dogs and cats mostly,

but also birds, fish and even horses — in settings ranging from hospitals and nursing homes to schools, jails and men-tal institutions. Besides aiding physical health, animals can enhance the mental health of people. Many people benefit from

the unconditional affection from a friendly animal, especially during times of transition or difficulty. Many groups support the health benefits of pet ownership. You can learn more about the health benefits of pets and how to keep your pets healthy by consulting with your

veterinarian.

Gardening is generally thought of as a pleasant pastime to while away the hours. However, you may be surprised that time spent tending your garden can help with both your physical and cardiovascular fitness. Time spent in the garden can help give you a general all-over workout while you tend to your plants.Just about any activity you do in the garden is a form of exercise. Bending down to weed, digging, carrying bags of fertilizer, pushing the lawnmower—it’s all exercise with the added bonus of something productive. As with other forms of exercise, a little stretch-ing to warm up the muscles and tendons you’ll be using will help to get you moving. Also, be-ware that repeated bending can be bad for your back so be sure to give yourself periodic breaks to protect against stress and strain injuries associated with being in unnatural positions for long periods. Routine weeding and pruning are among the most common things you do in your garden. To weed and prune thoroughly you will be using

tools such as forks and shears to dig up weeds and cut through shoots and branches. The effort you use to cut through these things will help to tone up your arm muscles. When it is time to plant or apply fertilizer it will inevitably involve the lifting and carrying of heavy bags. Be careful to lift with your legs and not your back as you would with any other heavy weight you are lifting. The effort of lifting and carrying will help tone you up and the heavy breathing will beef up your cardiovascular fitness.Even cutting the grass is an aid to your overall fitness. It’s not just pushing the lawnmower. While you are doing that you are actually using all sorts of muscle groups—your legs and thighs to push and walk, your arms and shoulders to push and steer. So do not view gardening as just another boring chore to be done. It can actually be good for you in addition to a great looking garden and can even (if you are in to vegetables) put food on the table.

Dining is a great way to bring the family together or create a romantic evening for two whether you are dining in or dining out. Dining is always a special treat that allows a different atmosphere, great food, and just a place to relax and be together without any distractions. It also allows a great way for everyone to choose what they want whether it be steak, seafood, or even Mexican. There are many different varieties to choose from in most restau-rants to suit everyone’s appetites. Dining is even a great way for friends and co-workers to meet and catch up or let off some steam over a great meal. The dining experience can be a great one if you aren’t one to get out to restau-rants very often. Try dining outside on the patio if the restaurant has one. Enjoy the food you are being served and always try new things even if that means stealing a little off of your friend’s plate. Enjoy a glass of wine or another special or gourmet drink. The food, the atmosphere, and the drinks

can combine together into one amazing experience that will be hard to forget. Celebrating some one’s birthday or a birth is always a great excuse to go dining at a nice restaurant and a way for everyone to come

together and enjoy each other’s company without the stress of having to cook and clean to prepare for the celebration.Bring the dining experience home by ordering from a favorite restaurant and dine in the comfort of your own home. This is great for cold nights or a family gathering. Having a restaurant cater to your home to host a gath-ering will take the headache away from having to cook all the food yourself and everyone can still dine together in a familiar setting. So whether it is a special occasion, a family gathering, getting together with friends or co-workers, or just a treat for a couple, dining

out can be a wonderful experience free of stress and full of great food and memories.

101Food Wine&There are many types and varieties of wine and you can find a great wine to accompany any meal. Are you having a light, sophisticated luncheon with your book club members? Perhaps such an occasion calls for a cool, light sophisticated Chardonnay. To help you with your pairing efforts, here is a list of some of the more popular wines, their descriptions and the types of dishes with which to pair them.Cabernet Sauvignon (Ka-ber-nay soh-vin-yoh) Best known as the “King of Red Wine” it has a deep red color, with richness of taste and flavor. Serves well with hearty foods. Chardonnay (Shar-doe-nay) Known as the “King of White Wine”, its color is pale to straw yellow producing an elegant white wine. Taste can vary from semi sweet to sour, heady or light. Goes best with poultry, seafood, red meat and cheeses.Gewürztraminer (ga-VERTZ-trah-MEE-ner) Know as the spice grape, it is a sweet white wine with full, fruity spicy flavors ideal with Asian foods, ham, pork and grilled sausages.Pinor Noir (Pea-no-NWAHR) Burgundy wines are most often made from the grape. Color is light to medium red, and darkens as the wine ages. Dishes of pasta with red sauce, light beef and fowl would do well with this wineMerlot (Mer-loh) Often used as a blending grape with the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, it has developed into a delicious wine in its own right. Its color is medium to dark ruby, with a plummy fruit flavor. It is a good match with

beef, chicken and pasta dishes. Also an excellent compliment to choco-late.Riesling (Reez-ling) Also known as Rhine or Johannisberg Riesling, it is pale straw to white in color with a taste of dry tartness. It is best served with seafood and most oriental dishes.Sauvignon Blanc (Saw-Vee-nyon-blahnk) Another popular blending grape, its color is light to medium yellow with a tinge of green. Typically very light with a sweet to dry taste, it is a very popular picnic wine and ideal with fish, shellfish, chicken and pasta dishes. Syrah (Sir-ah) or Shiraz (Sear-az) Known either as Syrah or Shiraz, the grape creates a light, medium to heavy red color, with taste varying from peppery to fruity flavor. Hearty foods such as beef as well as spicy Indian or Mexican foods serve well with this wine.Zinfandel, Red (Zin-fun-dell) A very popular wine in the U.S., style can vary from light to full bodied, and color from deep red to dark purple. It has a spicy peppery flavor. Serves well with “American” foods such as burgers, pizza and red sauce dishes.Zinfandel, White (Zin-fun-dell) A newcomer to the wine industry, it is very popular with new wine drinkers because of its sweetness and ease of taste. Although la-beled as a white wine, color is pale-rose and tends to have citrus and lights flavors. The wine is delicious with light sauces and pasta, fish, pork and other light meals.

Most of us strive to improve our financial habits every year, yet very few of us manage to do so. It is our lack of understanding of financial opportunities and best practices that highlights the importance of a financial planner or advisor. A financial planner devises and implements a well-researched and sound financial plan that can yield more money for you and your family, make you better prepared for life changes and provides increased protection against mistakes and unexpected circumstances. The fear of financial crisis is always on the back of our mind- thanks to the damages done by the recent recession, which many people are still recovering from. This is the reason why you can see a surge in the number of people opting to take help from a financial adviser or financial planner to manage their personal finances. The importance of a financial advisor arises for different reasons at different age levelsYOUNG ADULTS: Most people who plan to an education or those who are just starting out in their career, have to sometimes worry about loans and repaying them. Young adults, who start saving early and protect themselves financially against any unforeseen circumstance, are the most financially secure individuals by the time they become middle aged. A financial planner arms you with expertise and resources with which to approach planning your financial future.

MIDDLE-AGED PEOPLE: Even if you are well established in your career and have stacked away some cash for future use, you need to take the help of a financial adviser. From advising you on income tax savings to maximizing the benefits available to you and investment in stocks, you get all the help from the financial adviser. Through proper financial planning, you can also protect your family from financial crisis and take care of life, health and income protection insurance.RETIREMENT-READY INDIVIDUALS/RETIREES: In the later years of your life, illness and lack of income can cause problems if you didn’t invest in any retirement plan earlier. With just a few years remaining for your retirement, the financial advisor can direct you towards that investment plan which is best for you and your family. You need to maximize the returns on your investment in order to meet your expenses when your employment income stops.A financial advisor is needed for people from all walks of life, ranging from a housewife to a business professional. However, remember that this is your money and you’re in control. Question and challenge your advisors if you’re feeling any vagueness and discomfort. Feel free to seek out second opinions. Stay educated and stay in power. A good financial advisor will make you feel relaxed, will listen intently and interpret your needs. You will know a good financial advisor by the questions he or she asks.

Ever have one of those days when you had to learn something the hard way? Let’s take auto maintenance, for instance. Lots of us say things like “my shocks are bad, I’ll get to them some day”, or “the tires are get-ting thin but I can get a few more miles out of them”, or “my headlights out and the wipers only halfway work, but I don’t have time for that right now”. Then one rainy night you are driving down the road with your one headlight and the wipers are only sort of cleaning the windshield, when a deer darts out and you swerve to miss it. Due to your shocks not holding and the tires not gripping the road, you lose control. Down in the ditch you go, into a power pole, through the fence and out in some farmer’s field. When you finally come to a stop, you get out to check the dam-age. The field is too soft you can’t drive out, plus you have a flat tire. The one headlight that did work is busted plus the front fender is dent-ed up. You are now looking at a tow charge, replacing a power pole, fence, and more than likely your vehicle. So how much money did you save by not replacing the shocks, wipers, tires, and a headlight?Your health is much like your vehicle—regular maintenance can save you a lot of headaches down the road. We say things like, “that ache in my side—that usually goes away in a day or two”, or “that chest pain – a couple of deep breaths and all is fine”, or “that shortness of breath—oh I just need to get more exercise”. If you continue to put off checkups and ignore the little signals your body is giving you, you can end up in the emergency room taking all sorts of tests to figure out what is wrong, which is going to end up costing a lot more of your time and money! Not to mention the benefits of early detection when it comes to most health issues. My suggestion: Keep an eye on your gauges and pressure (tire, oil and blood), temperature (coolant and body) and mirrors (make sure what is behind you--as in how did you feel last year, 10 years ago or 15?). Just like your vehicle needs air circulation for the radiator to work, your body also needs good air and blood circulation for it to work properly.Get that check up and do regular maintenance. It will not only save you money in the long run, but it may save your life as well!

YOUR BODY IS LIKE A CARit needs regular maintenance!

FROM FARM TO TABLE Good for Everyone!

What is Farm to Table? Farm to Table simply means a direct line between the people producing food and our kitchen. It’s a personal re-lationship between you and the farmers. The farmers get a guaranteed income, and we get lovely, nutritious food. So what are the benefits of buying local? Honestly, they’re endless. First of all there is the taste factor. Local products mean less time on a truck or in transit, which mean fresher and more nutrient-rich foods. Farm to Table produce is typically harvested within 36 hours of delivery, so they have more time to ripen “on the vine”. In addition to being healthy for you, getting your food locally is healthy for the environment. The average 18-wheeler gets roughly five miles to the gallon. To move produce 1,500 miles would burn around 500 gallons of diesel fuel, which is a lot of gas to burn to get a tomato that most Americans could grow in their backyards. Restaurants and families are not the only producers and consumers getting into the farm to table movement. Farm to school movements are sprouting up across the county.

Farm to school - or farm to cafeteria - movements help both farmers and students by supporting small to medium sized local farms by providing them with consistent business and by providing school age children with healthy locally grown food. Programs also encourage experiential nutrition education activities designed to teach children to be healthy eaters for life. Although the local food movement has gained momentum in the last few years, farmers and organizers encourage the public to continue to demand locally grown food in restaurants and supermarkets. For farm to table food to become the norm rather than the exception, consumers have to continue to ask for local food and continue to support places that offer locally grown produce and meat, like some restaurants, farmers markets and your local meat processing stores. Even though farm-fresh produce and meats might cost more, you’re not spending a lot of money on travel expenses and you’re being more environmentally friendly. You’re also keeping business in the communi-ty and supporting the local economy.
