Main themes : Lectures, using audio-visual material. Subjects dealt with: the origins, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, the Petrarchans, Tasso, Ariosto,baroque theatre and opera.

Aims : - Basic course;- This course aims to introduce students to the great authors of the Middle Ages and of the baroque period and to develop theirliterary sensibility;- Introduction to the language of the Middle Ages.The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s)can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.

Teaching methods : The course is in the form of lectures: this is a deliberate choice to give students experience of a form of teaching they will encounterin Italy on an Erasmus exchange.The practical sessions deal with the preparation of a choice of texts from a linguistic point of view. These texts will be covered inclass and will require students to make active use of analytical procedures introduced in LROM1753.

Content :The students will take a broad look at Italian literature from the Middle Ages until the 18th century.The students will become familiar with the linguistic features of Medieval and Renaissance Italian in the practical sessions and willbe able to discuss the elements relevant to the course (both the theoretical and practical sides) in an oral presentation.Using the tools available from the library and online, the students will undertake independent research into the key biographicaland bibliographical information concerning the authors discussed on the course.
