WHAT IS 3D MAMMOGRAPHY? 3D Mammography is a state of the art breast imaging technology which produces a three- dimensional image of the breast in “slices” from different angles (see below). During Corridor Radiology’s 3D mammography exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in an arc over your breast, taking multiple low does images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of your breast tissue providing greater visibility for your radiologist to see breast detail in a way never before possible. The radiologist can scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book.

In a conventional 2D mammogram there appears to be an area of concern that the doctor may want to further investigate with another mammogram or a biopsy. Looking at the same breast tissue in slices from the Genius exam, the doctor can now see that the tissue is in fact normal breast tissue that was overlapping in the traditional mammogram creating the illusion of an abnormal area. In this scenario this patient likely avoided a callback for an additional mammogram thanks to the Genius exam.

Q. Why is there a $60.00 charge?

A. Some, but not all insurance companies, do not reimburse for the 3D portion of a mammogram. Think of the 3D mammogram as an “upgrade”. The standard screening is billed to insurance and generally covered. The 3D portion is billed with a different CPT code. Unfortunately if an insurance company does not cover the “upgrade” of 3D, we must pass this cost on to our patient. We encourage you to call your insurance company and ask if CPT code -77063 is covered. If you are not covered by insurance for the 3D portion, you will receive a bill from Radiologic Medical Services in the amount of $60.00.

Q. Do I need a doctor’s referral to have a Corridor Radiology 3D mammogram?

A. You do not need a referral from your physi- cian to schedule a screening mammogram unless you have Medicare as your primary insurance. You will, however, need to designate a physician to whom we may send your results.

Q. Is there more compression with Corridor Radiology 3D Mammography?

A. No, the compression is the same for 3D. For the most part a woman will not experience any longer time in compression than before.

Q. Is there more radiation dose with a Corridor Radiology 3D mammogram?

A. When compared to your previous mammogram at Corridor Radiology your radiation dose will be similar if not slightly reduced.

Q. Are women with dense tissue the only people who should get a Corridor Radiology 3D mammogram?

A. Women with dense tissue are the people who benefit most from a Corridor Radiology 3D mammogram, however women with any tissue type will still benefit from this exam. A Corridor Radiology 3D exam is approved for all women who should undergo a screening mammogram and is considered our gold standard of care.
