International, the partnership works in three pathways

to improve the nutrition and economic livelihoods of 100

million people by 2030 through programs that:

• Improve the productivity, incomes, nutrition and resilience of poultry producers

• Build awareness and extend reach of Hatching Hope’s nutrition education and training on poultry farming practices through community-led development, local marketing and digital channels.

• Provide access to products and services to improve productivity and create linkages to market channels for producers to sell their meat and eggs.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Millions of communities worldwide suffer nutritionally and economically because they lack access to efficient, productive agricultural practices and high-quality protein. Lasting change will come from creating an enabling environment that supports sustainable community development. According to the United Nations, creating a world that is food secure will require additional investments in agriculture from governments, the private sector and other donors to increase agricultural productivity and provide sufficient access to food worldwide. Livestock is one of the fastest growing agricultural subsectors in emerging economies, accounting for about 30 percent of agricultural GDP. However, approximately 85 percent of livestock farmers around the world live on under $2 a day. Investments in sustainable supply chains will help smallholder farmers become more productive, efficient and environmentally sustainable so they can feed their families and meet the requirements of a growing market demand for animal-source proteins.

WHAT’S THE VISION?Through the combination of Cargill’s technical expertise and Heifer’s community development capabilities, Hatching Hope is supporting the development of farmers and helping lift communities out of poverty through sustainable animal agriculture.

The results: Farmers prosper. Family nutrition improves. Communities’ incomes increase. And business grows.

WHY POULTRY?The opportunities associated with rural poultry are many: all members of the household can be engaged in the production, especially women, youth, and the elderly, and because the growing cycle is relatively fast-paced, poultry can deliver quick income opportunities for households across diverse environmental landscapes. Access to poultry meat and eggs provides an excellent nutritional source particularly for children, and can rapidly improve daily diets.

WHEN AND WHERE?

Initially, Hatching Hope is developing programming in India, Mexico and Kenya, as these are countries in which Cargill and Heifer both have an existing presence and where we believe we can have an impact. Programming has begun in Odisha, India, and programs in Mexico and Kenya will be starting in 2019.

Hatching Hope offers a new way to engage communities and contribute to seven of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals aimed at eliminating poverty, hunger, and gender inequality; improving sustainable farming practices; reinforcing peace and justice; and stimulating economic growth in vulnerable rural communities around the world.
