A True Friend

A true friend is always there for us,To catch us if we fall,

They never swear, lie or cuss,But they tell us to stand tall.

A friend teaches us to be humble,Because they know that sometimes we stumble.

A true friend will always be there, and we know that they care.

A true friend will always be true to heart,And you two will never be apart.

Above all they know who you are,And they will always be your shining star.

There is a moment of pure joyThat seems to cut out troubles in half

And we forget all burdensAnd that is when we laugh

When I am at my summer campSurround by my friendsAnd we go out hiking

To talk by the river bends When I stay up late with my sister And our silliness is high That I laugh so hard I really want to cry When my team and I win big And we

look at each other in disbelief But we start to smile and giggleOut of pure bliss and relief. When my mother and I are in the kitchen

And the oven is all aglow And we start to laugh at our processIt’s way better than any cooking show. When a song comes on the radio

And I remember a memory behind it And I can’t help but to laugh out loudAnd for me to calm my smile, it takes a bit When I’m lying in that grassy field

Watching the stars aboveAnd my closest friends are by me

And I can feel all bliss and love So here’s a bit of advice, for on your own behalfThat every day just for a bit, take some time to laugh

Love Hurts

Love is pain because of the sacrifices we make for one another. Love hurts when you’re away from the person you love the most and means the world to you. Laughs and giggles make us smile, but when it stops the world feels like its coming to a screeching halt. But remember when all else fails love comes around and gives you a second chance. When I think about what we used to be, I cry and cry in spite of me. It just seems crazy that was just last year, just last year I barely cried one tear. Now I'm just hoping maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow

Page 7: The GMS Literary Magazine

there'll be no more sorrow. Maybe tomorrow you'll give me a glance, Maybe tomorrow you'll give me one last chance. Maybe tomorrow you'll give me a call, maybe tomorrow I won't cry at all. Maybe tomorrow you'll hug me tight, maybe tomorrow you'll kiss me good night. Maybe tomorrow you'll take back my heart; maybe you'll give me a brand new start. I'm living with dreams that won't come true, for you will never love me as I love you.

As we sit on our last day, Knights, bold and trueWe stand proud to the colors, gold and blue.I look at the year past, having fun in 8th grade,Wishing that I could have longer stayed. Portraying our grades and our growth as a “team”Working together to set our goals, it must seem. The love we share for one another,Is like being with a sister or a brother. So rejoice now for soon we distance from teachers and friendsTo soon find out what hides behind the bends. With high school close nearby,Education is the limit and so is the sky. Well I will say farewell one last timeAnd I will try not to rhyme. To all my friends I bid a sorrowful farewell,But I think I heard the final bell.8th says goodbye . . .

Roses are white, Roses are red, Roses are yellow, Roses are pink, Roses are orange, Roses are black, Roses are purple. People use roses for important occasions. Roses smell so so good, that everybody wants one. Roses are beautiful. People love roses for a lot of reasons. And most people like more red roses. People have roses in their house because they think they look pretty. People give other people roses because of love, because of friendship, or because they like those people. Husbands give to their wives red roses. Friends give roses to their friends. Guys give roses to the girls. Kids give roses to their mothers. Roses are more than beautiful. I would like to be a rose. Roses make people happy. Roses have beautiful colors. Red roses mean love. White roses mean happy love. Yellow roses mean joy and friendship and I care. Orange roses mean friendship. Black roses mean death. Pink roses means thank you. And purple means…

SONNET

I was born on June 5th, 1996.Dave gave me something I would not forget.A Lady of Guadalupe necklace. He put it on me the very first time we met.

Then one day my mom left me with my dad.My dad left too looking for better things. My necklace from him was all that I had.Guadalupe was to help me grow wings.

I guarded Guadalupe every day.I had my necklace where ever I went. But She disappeared when soccer I played. It broke my heart because of what it meant.

It was the worst thing that happened to me.My necklace again I wish I could see.

I don’t know much, but I know love’s no joke!My grandparents are my models you see,For 48 years, you know they’re no hoax!My grandparents, they mean the world to me!

Going to their house, it is so much funWorking in the garden, riding my bikeThere’s so much to do before the day’s doneMy grandmom fixes food I really like! When my grandparents smile, it makes me glowIt warms my big heart when I make them proudThey’ll always be there for me, this I knowEven when I’m being extremely loud!

Someday I may grow up and move away,But in my heart so close they’ll always stay!

Maybe it’s how I feel, maybe its how I act.Maybe I should wipe the stupid grin off of everyone’s faceThe pain. The pain. The Pain comes and goes.Years of neglect have left my heart and soul beat and torn.I wonder if I can take anymore.

It’s like I’m in a dream, thinking in a weird paradox.Day after day of unrelenting shame.I dream of a better place, but wake up with a knife in my back.I try to cry out, but no one hears me, instead of helping me they push me farther

and farther away.Away I drift into the void of darkness, goodbye.

School’s in Session

School’s in,

Summer’s out,

Winter’s coming around fast.

It’s time to get rid,

Of swimming fins,

Now we can’t lazy around!

In school,

I’m really, really new,

But, friends are all around!

Because I’m in Middle School!

ChristmasIn the corner a tree stands tall,Gathered around it are us all,

All baby’s toys are small,Tim got a basketball.

Inside Christmas is the reason we celebrate,Christ was born the 24th of December,

He wasn’t born in November,He was born to stop the world from hate.

Children like Christmas because of presents,Adults like Christmas because of the presence,

Of family and friends all near,There’s no reason to fear,

Oh, it’s Christmas time of year!

A Hug

A hug is how you know a friend is real; They wrap their arms around and pull you near. And in that moment everything you feelIs shared and there is nothing left to fear.A hug can make the darkest day seem bright,Or make a day already bright pure bliss.A hug is like the dawn that ends the nightAnd often it’s a prelude to a kiss.Like home, a hug is comfortable and warm.Like love, a hug is given full and free.Like shelter from a fierce and raging storeA hug is where the heart can safely be.Like every mother kneels to hug her child,A hug can make this wicked world less wild.

Spring is the best season

Hearing the birds’ cherp.

Seeing the flowers starting to bloom

Seeing the little bunnies.

Them eating the grass.

The weather starts to get warm.

Taking off the uggs,

Putting on the sandals

Having a grill out with friends,

And start partying

Cutting the Strings

I’m not your puppet anymore.I’m tired of this act.The audience can’t see the strings –The strings that strangle me . . .The permanent smile painted on my face is fading away.

For years you’vePulled me.Forced me.Controlled me.But not any more.I can’t put up with this –This song and dance. It’s not about you any more. It’s about me now.I’m cutting the strings.

Case 39

Case 39 revolves around one of the genre’s well-worn tropes: the “evil child”. Renee Zellweger plays, Emily, a child services worker who is handed the case of a young girl, Lilth (Jodelle Ferland, “Silent Hill”), who is reportedly suffering abuse at the hands of her parents. Poor Lilith, or Lily, seems fragile and innocent, while her parents appear alternately aggressive, overstressed, or unhinged. After Emily witnesses a particularly heinous attack on Lily, she has the parents arrested and petitions for temporary custody of the child. And then the troubles really begin.

As is usually the case in such stories, Lily appears to be a model child, but behind the scenes, she manipulates others into acts of violence, or simply drives them insane. It takes several such attacks—on her parents (Kerry O’Malley and Callum Keith Rennie), on another foster child, and on Emily’s friend and fellow social worker, Doug (Bradley Cooper)—for Emily to put the pieces together and realize the Lily’s sweet face is a mask hiding something sinister. From that point on, it’s simply a matter of whether Emily can marshal her courage and do battle with the creature that has taken over her life.

FirelightA hidden truth.

Mortal enemies.

Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her for Jacinda is a draki, a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will’s dark secret: he and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs, but her inner drake is slowly slipping away—if it dies, she will be left as a human forever. She’ll do anything to prevent that even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Forget YouWhy can’t you choose what you forget … and what you

remember?

There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget like how her father got his twenty-four-year old girlfriend pregnant, like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown, like darkly handsome bad boy, Doug, taunting her at school. With her life about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how: using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player, Brandon.

But then, Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day, there’s one thing she can’t remember at all—the entire night before. Did she go parking with Brandon like she planned? And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug—of all people—suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them? Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much of a blank it is. Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life—a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon and strangely full of Doug.

HaloThree angels are sent down to bring good to the

world: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced angel of the trio. But she is the most human, and when she is drawn to a mortal boy, the angels fear she will not be strong enough to save anyone—especially herself—from the Dark Forces.

Is love a great enough power against evil?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on the trek that Dumbledore sent them on to find all the lost Horcruxes and destroy them all, but it won’t be easy. Harry, Ron, and Hermoine are fugitives from the law when the Death Eaters have taken over the Ministry of Magic, and there is a 10,000 galleon price for anyone who turns in Harry to the Death Eaters so Voldemort can kill him (the Dark Lord has told all Death Eaters not to kill Harry because Voldemort wants Harry for himself). Harry doesn’t know what the horcruxes look like or where they are. He also doesn’t have any means of destroying them if he did know. While Harry is on this quest, he keeps having little glimpses into Voldemort’s mind and he sees that the Dark Lord is also on a quest, but Voldemort’s quest is to find a wand that Harry has never heard of and when Harry investigates this a bit, his leads take him to a mysterious story about “the Deathly Hallows”. So, while Harry is looking for the Horcruxes and learning more about “the Deathly Hallows”, he finds himself in more danger than he’s ever been in before (as if he can get into any more danger). And when danger calls, people die . . . and in the last thriller of the Harry Potter series, a fight breaks out and a lot of people die. You will be in tears during every minute of this movie only to be in even more tears when it’s over.

All StarThis section gives you advice on how to have an awesome

middle school year. One of the situations that concern us all is out grades. Here are the top things you can do to improve your grades.

1. Get enough sleep for an important test.2. Study in a quiet and calm area so you can concentrate better.3. Do your homework as soon as you get home. DON’T GOOF

OFF!

When you’re in middle school, problems start to form sometimes. For example, people might offer you drugs. Just say no to these kinds of offers. Drugs affect you and the people around you. Another problem, but the most common is you want to dress like others or act the same. But nobody should be the same. Just be yourself and people will just like you for the way you are.

Life: What’s always happening.

BullyingIt happens every day! Something no one can stop! No, we’re not talking

about a monster here, but worse! I know it must not seem that bad, but it is! Bullying can lead to death, sometimes by your best friend.

Here’s the stereotype of a bully: a big mean boy who beats up people with his “crew”. BEEP. Wrong! Not all bullies are this way; in fact, barely any are! You see these “bullies” in cartoons and shows that are not reality! Get it? A bully doesn’t have to be a big person that’s mean all the time. Also, girls can be bullies, too. You might not be able to tell, but your best friend might be doing these things. He/she might not be mean to you, but to another person. Even though people may say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” doesn’t mean they’re not affected. When people hold their sadness in themselves for a long time, it can lead to depression, which is the worst sadness ever!

Depression can lead people to not wanting to talk or explain why they feel this way. And depressed people sometimes feel that they don’t belong anymore so they turn to suicide. The facts are that the kids who consider suicide are most likely to talk about their problems. Please get them help even if they make you promise not to say anything. Their lives count!

There are three different parts in bullying: the bully, the victim, and the observers. Everyone was a part of these things at some point of their lives. The bully bullies the victim while the observers watch. The observers should stand up for the person being bullied and do what is right, not just watch everything go downhill.

Page 50: The GMS Literary Magazine

A lot of hangings have been happening lately, which is not cool at all! Many people have died in laughter as they watched the mean pranks that made the poor victims of it sad. And the many people then drowned themselves in sorrow as they realized they were part of the deaths, too!

SO, are you willing to change, or do you want suicide to happen to a person you come in contact with almost every day? Two choices, one answer. But what will keep the innocents alive? Standing up for them or watching them slowly die inside?

Dear Sarah . . .

Dear Sarah,

There’s this really annoying person in my class that’s totally bugging me! I don’t want them to get mad at me, but they are so annoying!

The best thing to do is ignore this person. If they see you aren’t getting upset (that’s what they might want), they might stop bugging you. Don’t get worked up and start a fight; that’s the last thing you want to do! Instead, calmly talk to the person when you get a moment out of class. Be calm, polite and considerate or you might make them angry! If it gets out of hand, you should tell a teacher, but try to work it out first if it’s a minor problem.

Dear Sarah,

I got really made and yelled at my best friend. She won’t talk to me now. I want to be friends again! What should I do to show my best friend I want to be friends?

Sounds like you had some argument if your BFF won’t talk to you! If I were you, I’d go up to her and say that you’re sorry, you didn’t mean what you said and that you want to be friends. She would probably appreciate a card or note, too. If you friend still won’t talk to you, wait a while and give her some time to cool off. Sometimes people just need a little time to think things over and relax. Don’t get angry again! Just think about what you would feel like if you were in her place. Good luck!

Band at GMSWhat comes to mind when you hear the word “band”? To most people, the

answer is a bunch of instruments playing together. But to those of us who are in band, this is a time for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to work together and create not just obnoxious sound, but music. Band isn’t just another class, it’s a time for students to connect and make something we can be proud of.

There are so many instruments you can play in band: saxophone, flute, clarinet, trombone, drums, trumpet, tuba … the list goes on and on. You can also play variations of the same instrument. For example, types of saxophone are soprano, alto, tenor, or baritone. I play alto sax, because I wanted a sax small enough to carry around. (Yes, we all know saxophones are awesome.) You can choose almost any woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument you want to play in band, just be sure to contact Mrs. Chamberland if you want to join band.

This year, with a new teacher, comes the addition of jazz band. Students who already participate in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade bands can use their enrichment time to practice for jazz band. We’ve been practicing song such as Hark the Harold Angels Sing, Jingle Bells, and Silent Night. We’ll be playing these songs outside before the Broadway Knights Theater show. Now, all we need is some snow to get in the holiday feeling!

What’s the last advantage of band? Each winter and spring, the bands perform concerts for parents and friends after school, and possibly for students during school. This is a great time to show everyone our talent and get some good practice in!

DANCE OF THE MONTHThe school dance last month was a huge success! Lots of people attended

and it looked like everyone had a great time. There were plenty of snacks and the music seemed to please everyone of all ages. It was a great place to meet new friends or just hang out with the old ones.

Plenty of people made this dance possible. Mrs. Erskine carefully chose the music that played throughout the two and a half long dance on September 24, 2010. The class representatives’ were in charge of the snacks. It seem that Mountain Dew was a school favorite because they ran out of the popular drink many times. The chaperones were the teachers that work here at G.M.S. They did a great job of making sure that no one got hurt or teased at the dance.

After interviewing many sixth graders, I learned that this dance will be remembered until most of us G.M.S. middle school students get to college. This answer I got the most from students was, “It’s the first dance I have ever been to and might be the best!” I know that I’m not alone when I say I can’t wait for the next one!

The Festival of Foods

October 8th and 9th were beautiful days. They were the perfect days for Bridgeville to hold its 19th Annual Apple-Scrapple Festival. The town streets were packed with cares as they were searched for an empty parking place. This was caused by the many events scheduled for the two days.

The events ranged from a craft show, to a street dance, and even to a ladies skillet toss. There was a carnival, a mayoral scrapple toss, and a car show. There was truly something for everyone. The festival opened at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. This gave visitors plenty of time to greet politicians, browse the car show, ride the carnival rides, or search the Trinity craft show in the high school. The Apple-Scrapple Festival was named such to introduce tourists to two local delights—apples and scrapple. I recommend anyone who is able to go to the 20th Annual Apple-Scrapple Festival, definitely do go. It is fun for the entire family.

Local HistoryLong ago, the Indians were the first people who lived here. This

used to be a place of plenty with many fish and clams in the Chesapeake Bay. But, then the people of Europe came to start a colony here. Problems then emerged with the people as they started fighting. But soon all of Delaware was colonized. Lewes is one of the places that have a lot of history in general. There you can see the cannonball house (a house a way inland that has a cannonball indented in it showing how far it was shot). Also, there is a blacksmith and other historical places with many from colonial times. Lewes also has the remains of battery’s watch towers and other things from a military base that has been there since World War II. The base was called, Fort Miles. You can still see the bunkers, barracks, and other things today. It was there just in case Hilter’s army started to invade America. Although nothing big happened, you can still take tours into some of the batteries and take bike rides throughout Fort Miles. Later, after World War II, it was used as a secret navy base to track Soviet submarines. So as you can see, Lewes has a lot of history you can still see today making this a wonderful place for anybody interested in Local History.
