  • The GLOCK Report / Vol. 3 1997 page Three

At the first of each year, we pause to reflect onthe previous year’s accomplishments. We aremore grateful than our members realize for theirparticipation and support over the year. 1997saw an over 20% increase in our average matchparticipation. We at GLOCK are still trying to

catch up; GSSF has had one of its staff move intoLaw Enforcement Sales, (good Luck David!),and we’ll try and do better next year on how fastwe get materials to members.

We introduced two new courses of fire: 5 TOGLOCK and GLOCK’M. It’s always a challenge tobalance accuracy and speed in course design. Our experience this year was that we need toreconsider the accuracy component, so we’ll bemaking some changes in courses for the 1998season. Stay tuned!

If there’s one thing that sticks out in our mindsabout the year, it’s that most people had fun! Wesaw families coming out together, people tryingsomething new for the first time and having agood time at it, and perhaps most importantly,

exercising their rights as firearms owners in asafe and enjoyable sport.

The first matches of the 98 GSSF season willtake place at Ft. Benning, in Columbus, GA onApril 4-5 1998 and Mesa, AZ on April 18-19, 1998.We’ll have a full schedule published in the nextGLOCK report as the host clubs confirm theiravailability.

Once again, thanks for your support of GSSFand GLOCK! See you sometime this year!

GSSF: 1997-Bigger and Better than ever.

    30,000th G.S.S.F .Member Wins Pistol

Iwould like to express myappreciation to G.S.S.F..I was very surprised and elatedto hear that I had won aGLOCK pistol of my choice, just for joining G.S.S.F. I knowthat I will enjoy being a mem-ber of this organization.

My first experience with aGLOCK pistol was in Elgin, OK.I was a reserve police officer

there, and carried a revolver until the Chief of Policesuggested I try out a GLOCK. I was very impressed bythe way the GLOCK handled. The things I like the mostare the durability and easy maintenance. I would high-ly recommend GLOCK to anyone who is looking for anall-around excellent handgun.

Again, I want to thank G.S.S.F. and Vel Carmona for calling me with some great news. I hope to meetthe G.S.S.F. staff at one of the shooting matches. Thanks again!

    J.W.M.Texas

I recently shot in my second match in Long Island. Ijust wanted to tell you how helpful and kind every-one was. I would also like to thank Chris Edwards forthe staff shirt hegave me forhelping himwith a tape mea-sure. Your vol-unteers at thehosting rangeswere nice andoffered meshooting hints.Henry, from theCentral JerseyR&P club wasespecially niceand helped putme at ease atmy first matchin Jackson, NJ. The G.S.S.F. matches were fun and Ilook forward to participating in more in the future.

W hile the sport shooter is often looked upon asan equal to the violent criminal, it is our respon-sibility to promote our chosen sport. Receiving aposter is an enticement to write, but I have sincerethanks for GSSF and the volunteers who operate the matches.

At GSSF, Vel has shown me what true customer ser-vice is. She assisted me with my registration for arecent match. I was afraid that I would have to pay thehigher entrance fee after a delay by our United StatesPostal Service. Vel called me at home to let me knowthat my concerns had been taken care of, and I wasable to register for the match without an additionalcharge. Thanks for your assistance.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thankthe numerous volunteers who have graciously giventheir time to support our sport through their volun-teerism. At the last match I attended, there werenumerous complaints about how things were run. Iagreed that improvements could be made, but Isuggested to my fellow competitors that they shouldremember that the event was operated by volunteerswho give unselfishly so that we might have a good time shooting.

So, to all of the volunteers I say thank you formyself and for those few who complained. Keep up thegood work.

M y correct credit card number is 5398 6000#@!$&%...That was a good one! I was diggingthrough my wallet, looking for the card when you toldme that I won a pistol as the Fulton, NY match. Am Ijust lucky or what? GLOCK is absolutely fantastic!Where else can you meet friendly competitive individ-uals, have your guns checked (free) by an armorer, andhave the opportunity to win a prize?

I’ve enjoyed the past matches so much that I’ve con-vinced several friends to join the GSSF. The friendsthat had gone to the Fulton match with me left withcash prizes, but they are eager to go back next yearand try for a pistol. I regret that I was unable to attendmore matches this year, but I look forward to next yearand hope to hit every one in the region.

Thanks so much for everything Vel, I hope to seeyou again next year.

  • Gaston Glock in ConyersI just wanted to drop you a short note to tell youhow much we enjoyed the match in Conyers,Georgia. As you know, five of us made the trip up fromSouth Florida. On our way back to Florida (10 hourDrive), our entire conversation was about how muchfun we had and how well organized the match was.GSSF definitely knows how to run a pistol match. Thebiggest bonus of the match was the opportunity tomeet Gaston Glock and have our picture taken withhim. My friends and I can’t wait until the next match. We hope to see you there.

M y name is Amanda Killebrew. I am ten years oldand I got the high-est score in the under 18girls at the GLOCK matchin Conyers, Georgia. Mydad took me hunting formy first time when I wassix. I wanted to see whatit was like and I gothooked on it. Around thattime my dad taught mehow to shoot an air rifle. He brought me out in theyard and helped me prac-tice. Then my friend’sbrother wanted a gun like mine. He got one and wehave shooting matches in the yard. I beat him everytime. Now I’m interested in pistols. With a lot of practiceI can be as good with pistols as I am with my air rifle.

    A.K.Georgia

I am a police officer and armor-er for a mid-sized Californiapolice department. I wanted toshare a story with you to showjust how versatile your pistols are.One of our officer’s pistols took abath in the Pacific Ocean, beingcompletely submerged in saltwater for 10-15 minutes. Abouttwo hours later the pistol wasgiven to me to try to salvage. Icompletely disassembled the pis-tol, a GLOCK 17, and cleaned allof the parts. I let all of the partssoak in CLP overnight and thenreassembled the pistol. Not onlydoes the pistol work flawlessly, but it has now been about a

month and there is no sign of rust on the entire pistol. The only rust showed on the steel after market nightsights the officer had put on the pistol.

Thank you for making such a fine combat pistol. When other major companies’ pistols rust within oneshift working on the beach, it is nice to have confi-dence that a GLOCK will not let you down when youneed it.

“Y ou’re kidding!” No one could have been moresurprised than I was when my wife called meto tell me that she had just received a call from Vel atG.S.S.F.. She said that Vel had called to congratulateme on winning the GLOCK Annual Shoot IV this pastOctober in Conyers, GA.

If that weren’t a big enough surprise, Vel went on tosay that I had taken first place in the Competition classas well. Somehow, I really didn’t believe this until theresults actually showed up in the mail. (I thought it mightbe a little late in the year for an April Fool’s Day joke!)

I really didn’t go to the match looking to win; I justwanted to shoot some good fast runs to try to beat the tophit factor rankings that were listed in the Summer issueof the GLOCK Report.

The very first G.S.S.F match that was put on by GLOCKwas one of the first organized shooting matches that I hadattended. I actually had to borrow a pistol to shoot in thematch. I think I finished around 24th or so; not great, butI was bitten by the bug. This evolved into getting intoIPSC, and I’ve just started to dabble in sporting clays. These are both action-oriented shooting sports that arechallenging and fun, but a little on the expensive side.

This is where the G.S.S.F matches excel. Equipmentcost is minimal; the courses of fire are simple andstraightforward; and the payback is terrific. It is amatch that the whole family can participate in. Sincemy wife has started shooting, she has become one ofmy best shooting partners. I think I get more enjoyment

out of watching her practice and shoot a match than Iget out of shooting it myself. More guys ought to gettheir girlfriends and wives to go out shooting, so theycan see for themselves that the media portrayal of gunsis so off the mark. And the relaxed atmosphere of aG.S.S.F match is the perfect place to get them started.

Also, the new courses of fire are great. They are stillchallenging, but simple. I for one can tell you that I willbe participating in every G.S.S.F match that I canattend. And as a private investigator, the GLOCK is mychoice for my carry gun. The GLOCK’s simplicity, reli-ability and unmatched ruggedness give me a peace ofmind that I can rely on day in and day out.

Fine ShowingL iving up to its reputation of consistent reliability, quality performance out-of-the-box and ease ofoperation, the GLOCK series of pistols made a fineshowing at the 9-12 October 1997 LFI-1 class (MasAyoob’s Lethal Force Institute) in Dunbarton, NH. Ofthe 24 attendees, six were GLOCK owners/shooters(five G19s and one G27; see photo). Furthermore, thenumber one shooter in the class (lucky me—thirdfrom right!) qualified with his GLOCK.

In addition to constantly “stressing” safety aware-ness and the higher standard of care required by thosewho carry a handgun, Mas Ayoob emphasized qualityshooting techniques and the ability to perform understress. His insight into the concealed handgun as animportant piece of “safety rescue equipment” and atool to hold the line against life threatening tragedywas extremely important. Every man and woman whograduated from this course gained the vital knowledgenecessary to safely perform, when the unfortunate cir-cumstances dictate, the necessary actions required toprotect themselves and their family from unwanteddeadly violence until help arrives.

During three and a half days of shooting (approxi-mately 500 rounds per person) in a sandy environment, where the “competitive pressure” was ever present, Iand the rest of the GLOCK “team” were elated to beGLOCK shooters. Never once were we distracted bymalfunctions of any sort (not so for others), nor did wehave to worry about cumbersome safety devices. TheGLOCK’s reliability, and “simple” but extremely effec-tive safety features, enabled us to focus solely onimproving our technical skills while adapting to thepressures of the LFI environment.

Up to this point I had fired approximately 100rounds, at our local indoor range in Northern Virginia, from my newly purchased G19. As little as this was, I

“More guys ought to get their girl-friends and wives to go out shooting,so they can see for themselves thatthe media portrayal of guns is so offthe mark.”

was confident because the G19’s handling and perfor-mance was outstanding. Of course, I knew it would bebecause my G27’s reliability and accuracy has beenimpeccable. I convinced my friend Jerry Richardson(second from right), that the GLOCK was the handgunof choice for LFI, target shooting and personal carry. He also purchased a G19 and fired it for the first timeat LFI. As you can see from the smile on his face, hewasn’t disappointed. Jerry achieved LFI’s shootingqualification with little difficulty.

Jerry and I have been planning for our first GSSFmatch this Spring/Summer. I know the “butterflies ofcompetition” will still be present, however, we bothfeel more prepared having fired our GLOCKs under thewatchful eyes of Mas Ayoob and his staff. I know ourshooting skills will continue to improve with each andevery practice session. Like the camaraderie weshared during our 20 plus years in the Navy (Jerry andI are both “retired” Navy F4 Phantom and F14 Tomcataviators), we look forward to that same bonding andfriendship that prevails among GLOCK owners. Historical MemoriesF or the second consecutive year, my family and Itraveled from New York to compete in theGLOCK Sports Shooting Foundation match hosted byyour club. Once again, under very warm conditions, your range officers were friendly and your club members hospitable. Yourclub could have been ourclub for the treatment we received.

Traveling to your part ofthe country for the last twosummers has resulted in animportant educational expe-rience for my 10 year oldfifth grader, who has bene-fited from the rich historicalheritage your area offers tostudents of the AmericanRevolution. Although shehas visited many sites inNew York State of historical significance, our visits toLexington and Concord will never be forgotten.

This year’s visit was especially memorable for all ofus, as my daughter Roxanne, (who had just celebratedher 10th birthday) decided to join me in shooting theGLOCK match. Although we had carefully reviewed therules of safety, my daughter required the special atten-

tion that all new shooters require and then some,(because, after all, she still plays with dolls).

She received this special attention and a great dealmore, from Mr. Chris Edwards of the GLOCK staff andyour range officers. Our sincerest gratitude is reservedespecially for Mr. Eldon McWilliams, Mr Dave Carhart, and Mr. Lorin Johnson, who were not only patient, butskilled in their instruction of my daughter.

Thanks Guys!My daughter had previously fired a pistol on per-

haps two or three occasions, but never the pistol sheactually used in the match. Of course, I am very proudof Roxanne, who showed good character in overcom-ing what must have been great anxiety to stand up andshoot surrounded mostly by strangers. Maybe there’ssomething about Lexington and Concord that bringsout the best in us.

As I watched my ten yearold, I recalled that I was alsoten when adults encouragedme in my first match. That, and growing up in a farmingcommunity have cementedmy love of shooting sportsfor life. I know that the rolewe adults play in encourag-ing new shooters was notmissed either by the GSSF oryour club members, and youshould be proud of yourefforts. Given the controver-sies over firearms today in

the United States, I am especially moved that mydaughter received this memorable experience in whatsome might call the birthplace of freedom.
