From the Editor As you may know I have recently moved out of the village due to a c h a n g e i n p e r s o n a l circumstances. I am hoping this will be a temporary move away from Greatworth and I still continue to be about in the village whilst working at Playgroup. Nick Peart has kindly agreed to take over editing The Glimpse for the foreseeable future so all correspondence needs sending to him, preferably by email at [email protected] Or delivered to Stonelea, next to the pub. I would like to take this chance to thank the team who have helped with producing The Glimpse during the time I have edited it, including all those who make regular contributions. It has been a pleasure. On a personal note I would also like to thank my many friends in the village for all their help during a difficult time. I am missing living in Greatworth and hope to be back with you all soon. Liz Wolstenholme

The 1911 Census

It is now possible to look up details of this census on the village website www.greatworthparishcouncil.co.uk. The details are those of Great-worth, Halse and Stuchbury. The names of those in these places, and their details, are included as are the details of those with a connection to this parish but who were elsewhere (e.g. those who were born here but had gone to live somewhere else, or ministers or schoolteachers who had moved on - or hadn't got here yet). In order to see these details go to 'Greatworth Parish Council Forum' and then to 'General Discussion'.

Dolly Mixtures A warm evening saw us at ‘Culkein’ for our annual garden party, by kind invitation of Joyce & Mick Scott. Shelia Lee had devised a devilish quiz, the winners were, Greta & Annie. All members brought along a plate of appetising delicacies, so many that the sweets had to be transferred to the kitchen. Joyce & Mick also provided us with wine. Very many thanks to both of you for your hospitality. Business items and the raffle were then concluded. Our next meeting takes us to Tooley's Boat Yard, Banbury for a presentation and a boat ride priced at £7.50 per person. Meet at Marston Village Hall at 7.00pm prompt unless you are travelling direct to Banbury. Parking at Chamberlain Court is advised as it is free. Our meeting at Tooley’s Boat Yard is at 7.30 prompt. FOSTER’S LAGER DRINKER My wife and I have lived in Greatworth for 8 years and over the past 18 months whilst walking our dog I have noticed a considerable number of ‘Foster’s Lager’ can’s littering the Brackley Road, The Halse Road (towards Marston) and then a re-appearance leaving Marston on the Greatworth Road. Last week I counted in excess of 130 Foster’s tin cans in the verges, hedgerow’s and fields on the three roads mentioned.

The individual responsible for this irresponsible, dangerous and unnecessary behaviour whilst at the wheel of their vehicle will be shown in the act of throw-ing the cans onto the road by photographs to the local police should these acts continue. (Name supplied to Glimpse)

Greatworth St Peter and Marston St Lawrence churches

If you wish to partake in the practice of the imposition of ashes to mark the start of Lent please come along to Marston St Lawrence church on Wednesday 5th March at 7.30pm.

Mothering Sunday this year is on Sunday 30th March when an All Age service will be held in Marston St Lawrence at 10.30am. Please bring your whole family, especially your mother, for what promises to be a very special occasion. Tradi-tionally, this is also the day when you would return to the church where you were baptised. Let’s see how many people in Marston St Lawrence church on Sunday 30th March were baptised there or in Greatworth St Peter.

Youth Cricket

The season is nearly upon us and once we have put the waders away we will be back to practice. Hopefully Easter holidays. Looking towards a very exciting year as we look to field 2 equal under 11 teams as we will aim for fun, personal enjoyment and development. The sharper ones amongst you will realize I can-not be 2 places, at once so parental help to make this happen will be much appreciated.

We are also trying to field under 13 and under 15 teams. We will need players, ability irrelevant, fun absolutely essential. Please call Jim Dobson on 712336 if interested. One for the dog walkers please. If you do walk your dog on the field then please scoop up the mess as it’s not great on the whites !!

Greatworth Parish Council

Most of last month’s meeting was given over to an extended Open Time when a number of residents came along to say how they will be affected by HS2 and to discuss the council’s response to HS2 Limited’s Environmental Statement. By the time this edition of the ‘Glimpse’ is published the council will have held an extraordinary meeting to publicize the council’s response to the environmental statement and to decide whether or not to submit a Petition.

Not much time was left for any other business but the councillors heard about plans for a two-storey extension at ‘The Wickets’, Church Road and they did agree to adopt the proposals which a number of councillors had kindly drawn up as our response to the District Council’s Local Plan.

The problem of dog-walkers using field margins was mentioned - please avoid these as they are for the benefit of wildlife and the environment.

Other matters considered included the Radstone Fields development, the flood on the Dump Road and two dodgy street lights. The next meeting is on 3rd March and the next free bus is on Thursday 6th March (and the one after that is on 3rd April).

Methodist Church

Please note that the time of the “Open Doors” sessions every Monday has changed to 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. A variety of activities are on offer for anyone interested - please just drop in.The Winter Luncheon Club sessions have proved to be very popular but they have stopped now and will restart in October.

Art GroupThis group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in the Methodist Hall and the time has been changed to 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The group welcomes artists of all abilities, so please come along and join us.

New Starters: New starters at Pre-School this month are Nicholas and Ryan. We hope you enjoy your journey with us.

What the Children have been doing: During this term we have been learning about the Chinese New Year. We have tried out some new foods and tried to write in Chinese style. We have enjoyed playing with chopsticks and noodles.Fundraising: Thank you for supporting us at the fundraising Cheese and Wine evening. Thank you to Sharon and Mike Froom for hosting the event. It was well supported, and we raised £550, we look forward to purchasing some new resources for the children to make use of.In the build up to Easter, the children will be carrying out a sponsored Easter Egg Hunt.

Future Events:

World Book Day: On Thursday 6th March, we will be celebrating World Book Day by having a coffee morning between 9am – 10am. Our theme will be ‘Superheroes’ and we are looking forward to the children dressing up as their favourite characters. Please feel free to join them for refreshments that day.

Parent and Toddler Session: After the Half Term holidays, we will be trialing some changes to the setting. We will be welcoming younger members of the community on Tuesday afternoons, between 2pm – 3.25pm. A Parent & Toddler session will be run, where you can come to familiarise the children within the setting, whilst making use of the facilities and enjoying some refreshments. The charge will be £1.50 per adult, and £1 per child. Please contact us, to book your place.

After School Club: On Wednesdays and Fridays, starting 26th Feb, we will be trialing an After School Club between 3.30 – 4.30pm for children between the ages of 2 and 5 (Reception year at Primary school). The charge will be £3.50 per child. Again, please contact Katy at Pre-School for more information and a booking form if you are interested.

Bank Staff: Now that Pre-School is getting busier, we are looking to build up a small group of Bank Staff who we would be able to call upon, at busy times or in an emergency, to come and help out during our Pre-School sessions. The work would be on an ‘as and when’ basis and you would be paid for the hours you did. If you think you might be able to help us with this, then we would love to hear from you. Please contact Katy at Pre-School so that she can discuss the induction process with you, which will include a CRB check, in line with our Safeguarding Policy.

Next Committee Meeting: Our next committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 5th March at 8pm, at Pre-School. Please feel free to come along; you will be made to feel very welcome.

Marston St Lawrence Annual Village Meeting

The annual village meeting will take place in the Village Hall on Tuesday 11th March at 7.30pm. This is not a council meeting. It is a meeting of the parish electors. Electors can contribute to the agenda so if there is anything you would like to raise please let Rebecca Goodwin know at [email protected] There will be reports from local organisations and clubs, and the annual appearance of Pumfrey. If that means nothing to you come along and find out.

St Peters R & I

The coffee morning hosted by Lynn Rahim raised £196.00, many thanks to Lynn and those who supported the event. The January whist drive raised £113.40.In January the committee reluctantly accepted the resignation of Iris Thomas. Iris, as secretary, has been an invaluable member of the committee and her work & efforts on behalf of the R & I are greatly appreciated. Thank you IrisFortunately, after the appeal in the February Glimpse, Noreen Coffey has agreed to join the committee, welcome Noreen.

February was the AGM of the R & I and mulling over the events of 2013 all were agreed what a huge success the Wedding Fayre had been in September. However we seem to be very short of any photos of the event for future generations to admire. If anyone took and is willing to part with photos they have we’d be most grateful. Please Contact Tins on 711552

The Easter Fayre will be held in the Sports & Social Club on April 5th , which coincides with the Grand National, so please come and have a flutter, Times are from 10-30am until 12-00noon.

Any donations in the form of Cakes Raffle Prizes, Chocolates etc please contact Tina on 711552 they will be most welcome.

The next Coffee morning will be on March the 8th at Margaret Coppens, Bay Cottage.South Close. and the Next Whist Drive will be on March 26th at Brenda and Donald’s at The Nursery.

Finally because of Iris’s departure the committee are now short of a Secretary and is there anyone out there who would be willing to write the minutes of the 3 or 4 meetings we have a year?, Again not too ardous a task and you’d be very welcome, please contact Tina on 711552

WHAT IS PILATES? Pilates is a body conditioning technique developed in the early 20th century by German born Joseph Pilates. It is different to other methods of exercise and focuses on strengthening weak muscles whilst stretching stronger ones, to create a balanced integrated body. Pilates works both the body and mind.

WHO IS PILATES SUITABLE FOR? Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. Participants can be first time exercisers, those looking to enhance general fitness or enhance your current fitness plan. It is of great benefit for those wanting to help prevent injury, especially for those who suffer with lower back pain, neck problems and recurrent injuries.

BENEFITS OF PILATES Pilates improves ‘core stability’ by concentrating on strengthening the muscles of the trunk. This increases the support of the spine, which in turn improves posture, co-ordination and balance. The body becomes strong and flexible without overdeveloping major muscle groups. Stomach muscles are flattened and arms and legs are streamlined. If any of the exercises are too difficult due to a previous injury, exercises can be adapted to suit your specific needs.

Everybody welcome. If you require any further details, please contact Julie Russell on 07778 673677

The total collected in Greatworth during Christian Aid Week was £754.22. A truly wondrous response, which says much for the generosity of Greatworth people. This sum included donations from both churches. Thanks are due to Annette, Di, Dorothy, Iris, Jenny, Nicky and Noreen the volunteer collectors who trudged from house to house and did the work so willingly. Marston MoviesThe last couple of screenings have been poorly attended and have made small losses. We only need 20 people to break even. Whilst these were never intended to raise huge amounts of money and to be a service to the community it is not appropriate for the village hall funds to subsidise these shows. We have another film booked for Saturday 22nd March. Please note this is a Saturday rather than the usual Friday. The film will be Rush (15) which tells the story of the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. “Here’s a Formula One story that’s not just for petrolheads” Daily Telegraph. This is a step up in pace from our usual showings and I hope we will have enough there to justify continuing to show films in the future. The cost is very modest, £5 if booked in advance. There are refreshments available but you are free to bring your own drinks if you would like.

If you have any comments about the timing, day or choice of film which would encourage more people to come please let me know on [email protected] It would be a shame to lose this service.

Greatworth Gardening Group"Hot Tips for Hot-Houses and how to manage your plums"!

Greatworth Garden Group kicked off it's year of talks, by welcoming 5 new members to the group and bringing in our very own Pat Bussy from the 'subs bench', for our February meeting. Unfortunately, our scheduled speaker Ashley Warren from Bell Plantation, was still in Holland buying bulbs, so Pat very kindly stepped up to the mark to lead our meeting. Given such short notice, he asked what would be useful and topical to talk about . . . Water gardens and ponds, was one such suggestion, given the weather! But we managed to 'rein' (!) him in and asked if he would talk about greenhouses and propagation - a much dryer option! Pat gave us advice on what types of greenhouses are available, from the basic aluminium to cedar framed (which can cost thousands of pounds), how to build a sturdy base on which to bolt it to, otherwise, as in the current weather conditions we're experiencing, it would end up in our neighbour's garden! He told us various ways of heating it over winter, thus giving us the ability to use it throughout the year, not only for starting seedlings for flowers and vegetables, but for keeping flowering plants, such as alpines and orchids in the optimum conditions. Various questions were asked of Pat on what to grow and when and how to use a greenhouse to its best advantage and discussions soon ensued between the group, of what various people found useful and worked for them. Pat told us how, as an apprentice, he made a heated propagation box and gave us details of how simple it can be and by using it, what consistent results are obtained for starting seeds and young plants. He then explained how to take cuttings and how to plant them and the usefulness of a cold-frame for hardening off young plants before introducing them into the garden. The group discussion then went on to pruning fruit trees, in particular blackcurrants and apple trees - currants fruit from the previous year's growth, so it is best to cut out the old wood to allow through the new fruit-bearing growth for the following year. Pests and diseases were discussed at length, including Linda's 'problematic-pear-tree' and the ever infuriating codling moth, whose annoying larva infiltrates many a juicy plum!!A lively raffle and refreshments followed and discussions with Pat continued over a brew and some wonderful homemade delights. A huge thank you to Pat for stepping in and giving us a small part of his font of knowledge - a very useful and interesting evening.Next month, GGG meet again on Tuesday, 11th March at the school, this time we welcome David Cheshire, who will talk to us on Bonsai and how to grow them - for all you budding show exhibitors, we have a category especially for you! April's meeting is "Grow your own roses" and May we are hoping to book our annual trip, this year to Highgrove House, which primarily is open to GGG

This was Diane's first quarter peal so congratulations to her on that achievement. A quarter peal is 1260 changes. The only time we nearly went wrong was when I was wondering if there would be a band about to ring for my 90th in 2048. They may not even be born yet! GREATWORTH PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

At last month's meeting the councillors heard that the District Council is supportive of changes being made to the route of the proposed high-speed railway. Work is continuing on the Windrush site on Chapel Road: the pond has been dredged and the fisheries people have taken away a number of sticklebacks and crucian carp - they will be returned in due course. The grasscutter has mentioned tha t some b ranches a re overhanging the play-area and impeding his work: the vice-chairman offered to speak to the householders. The council has been represented at recent SNAG meetings and also at a seminar at which property owners who feel they would be adversely affected by, for example, noise from the proposed railway should get a pre-announcement 'red book valuation' of their property. Our new M.P. has been spoken to about concerns and it is possible that the new Secretary of State for Transport will visit the area. It was agreed that Halse's notice-board be refurbished and re-sited - cost £250.

It was also agreed to enter the Village of the Year Competition next year. Volunteers will be needed to take this idea forward, so this is something to be thinking about. The councillors accepted and adopted the SNC's Housing Needs Survey for Greatworth. The next step will be for Mr. Brunige, the Strategic Housing Officer, to visit Greatworth and see things for himself. The councillors seemed to think that about six more affordable houses would be about right although the report actually recommended more than this. The chairman sent his apologies because he was unable to attend the meeting, but he sent along a note to say that, with regards to the proposed wind-farm, the council's position should be balanced and neutral. The councillors' job is to talk to people and tell them what they know - which, until an actual proposition is made, is not much. We will make sure that developments (if there are any) are properly publicised. Next month's meeting is at Halse on Monday 5th July at 8 p.m. and the free bus is on Thursday 1st July. Greatworth Golf Society

The Darby Challenge was held on 12th June at one of the society’s favourite courses, the Three Locks. The clear winner was Hyw Phillips with 37 Stableford points on another day blessed by fine weather. Runner up was Andy Darby himself, a determined effort to win his own trophy but not enough to beat a golfer in fine form. Longest drive was taken by John Crowe and nearest (least furthest really) the pin was Bill Brown. We look forward to the Midweek Challenge on July 8th at Kenilworth and tickets are now on sale for the evening of Captain’s Day 24th July. New members of all standards always welcome. Bill Brown

Greatworth Playgroup

As you maybe aware Greatworth Playgroup is going through a very exciting time at the moment with plans for our new building within the school grounds. In February this year I announced that we had been successful with planning permission and a grant application for the majority of the funding. I know it may appear that things have gone a little quiet since but believe me, we’re like swans at the moment, calm and serene on the surface, paddling like crazy underneath!

We do have a lot of red tape to cut through before work can commence, without going into too much detail this involves leasing the land from School/Northamptonshire County Council, documentation to comply with the funding and VAT dispensation. However, we are making real progress. We’ve appointed Nick Low of ND&C Consulting in Brackley to help manage the project and between us, Nick and Rob Brown we’re close to appointing a builder now and the real work can commence!

At this stage we’re planning to start the building work during the school summer holidays, ensuring that any work involving heavy machinery etc, is completed without disruption to school. This will mean that we are now unable to run playgroup from the new building as hoped in September. However, playgroup will continue to run within the school hall with the same hours as we do at present, apologies to anyone hoping to increase their child’s hours from then or to use wrap around care as planned. Subject to builders etc, we are aiming now at being in the new building from the beginning of Term 2, Nov 1st. At this stage we envisage some extended hours from this point, though full day care will probably not be available until 2011. Liz Wolstenholme, Playgroup Supervisor will be in touch with playgroup parents to discuss required hours for terms 1 and 2 and if anyone else has any queries regarding this please feel free to get in touch with Liz or myself.

We are extremely grateful to Mrs Toman and the Governors of Greatworth School for all their support with the ongoing planning and apologise in advance for any disruption during the build!

These are exciting times for Playgroup and there’s never been a better time to be involved, particularly if you have children about to join. Our AGM is scheduled for the 15th September, so please do come along, we always need new committee members with fresh input. Myself (Chair) and Nicky Trower (Secretary) will both be standing down this year so do come along and encourage the new Officers in their roles!

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support.

Cathi Simpson Chair of the management committee

Greatworthians Abroad

Happy New Year to our fellow Greatworthians – well what a start to it we all seem to be having! As many of you will have seen on your TV screens Atlanta, the 9th largest metropolitan area in America, basically ground to a halt on the 28th January and of course the finger pointing and blame game started very soon after. In fairness to the Georgians they don’t get snow usually. Up to now it’s been about once every 10 years the last major event being 1993 and then a smaller version in 2011. When it does snow if often doesn’t accumulate but the Arctic Vortex which had given us below freezing temperatures for about a week beforehand meant that this time the snow did accumulate – very quickly on untreated roads.

The Weather service here does a great job – and they correctly forecasted the snowfall. Unfortunately the Emergency Response didn’t react to the upgraded storm warning in the small hours of the morning and failed to send the 30 ploughs and 70 gritters out onto the roads in the small hours – assuming they had drivers ready to go of course which they may not have had – so they got gridlocked like everyone else. By the way this is a vast improvement over the number of 4 which is what they did have in 2011 I’m told. The Mayor of Atlanta does not have jurisdiction over the Interstates – that is GDOT’s responsibility (Georgian Dept. of Transport) and there are 16 other mayors of counties like ours (Cobb) which form the greater Atlanta area and they all operate independently of each other. Add on a chronic lack of investment in public transportation over the past 20 years with most cars on the road having one occupant and the traffic density is horrendous on a normal rush hour never mind a snowy one. Marietta didn’t want the MARTA (subway system) extended into Cobb County because it was seen as providing a gateway for lower income earners to head in this direction not to mention the criminal element, who, of course, would use it to burglarize houses and then walk miles with their stolen flat screen TVs and go back home on the MARTA. Really?! Add on appalling driving skills by a pretty large percentage of the population under normal circumstances, some in vehicles that in England would probably not be allowed on the road, no snow tyres and in many cases no tread either and a total lack of understanding about how to drive in snow and ice and the stage was set.

Very foolishly Graeme and I obviously had our Canadian heads on – it was only 2” of snow after all. Our Atlanta heads, which we must have switched off, said; they haven’t got the infrastructure, they haven’t got a clue how to drive in it, the vehicular density here is horrific – it’ll be chaos. He went to work, gave staff permission to leave at 11am but didn’t leave himself until about 4pm and I had booked the car in for an oil change and was picked up at the garage by my 3 friends and trotted off to book club 4 miles away in Marietta. My journey took from 1.30-7.30pm covering 3.5 miles and I slept at a friend’s house having walked into her sub-division from the main road leaving my 3 girlfriends to carry on at their insistence until 10.30pm when they reached one’s house and stayed there. The following day dawned with a brilliant blue sky and sun (a normal winters day in Canada) so I borrowed a pair of flat soled boots from my hostess donned my ‘Canada’ coat, furry hat and lambs wool lined mitts and announced my intention of walking home the 6.5 miles. There was very little traffic (surprise surprise) and within

Page 19: The Glimpse of Greatworth DIARY HURCH ETHODIST DATES 11th ... · quintessentially English occasion and we would be very pleased to see you there. Dave Scott ... Saturday 19th July

50 feet of starting along the main road a chap pulled up and offered me a lift, insisting on going out of his way to take me about halfway home before I persuaded him to drop me off and continue back to his route. He’d spent the night on the floor of an hotel lobby just off the interstate and was trying to make it back up North of Atlanta. In insisting that he accept some cash for his kindness I managed to leave my wonderful warm mitts in his car which was very annoying but I arrived home safe and sound by midday having burned off some calories – always good. Graeme and his colleague (who hadn’t a prayer of making it home) spent 5 hours plus doing about 5 miles and Graeme’s little 2 seater, rear wheel drive car made it back with a shove up one hill from a 4 x 4 truck with push bars on the front and an old piece of carpet sandwiched between them.It seemed to bring out the best in folk overall. Guys at one garage we passed were handing out hot coffee another was helping keep cars going up the incline by their site with handfuls of kitty litter/gravel. People helped out putting strangers up in their homes or providing loo stops or food. Schoolchildren slept at schools, in some cases, or had to be rescued off school buses which had got stuck. Demented parents hit the road regardless of whether their child was safe or not simply adding to the congestion and the chaos.

Today (February 12th) we have another winter storm in progress but with less of the snow and more of the ice which if anything, is more usual down here. Georgians are reeling as this happens so rarely and to be hit twice in a 2 week period is unheard of. This time Governor Deal and Mayor Reed were taking no chances – nor was Novelis. Graeme has worked from home for yesterday and today and will see what the roads are like tomorrow. Gritters and ploughs were all geared up to go and people have been told not to drive anywhere unless it’s absolutely necessary and had to be at their destinations by 8pm last night. Schools are closed. Here in the NW of the GTA (Greater Atlanta Area) we’ve escaped lightly although the bamboo at the end of the garden have their noses on the lawn so there is some ice accumulation, but Atlanta itself and to the east is harder hit with about 30,000 homes as I write with no power. In preparation for that eventuality I’d filled the big bath in the master suite with water for flushing loos etc. Unfortunately Miss Velvet in attempting to jump on the window sill above said bath slipped and fell in – hot pursuit with towel in hand followed. Currently it’s raining ice pellets and the temperature is not due to go above the freezing mark until about noon tomorrow. Whilst the interstates and major arteries have been kept in good shape this time around, largely through telling everyone to stay off them so that treatment could be done, it remains to be seen how quickly we get back to normal tomorrow.

In 5 years of living and working in Canada, Graeme had one or two snowdays at most – in 18 months here he’s had to have 4 days working from home already. Canada seems to be having the worst winter since the 40s, England is underwater, America is either having a drought, is on fire or is frigid in places that are never frigid, only Switzerland seems to be in relatively good shape (are we surprised?!) and even there they would say they are not having a normal winter. Maybe – just maybe – some of those Americans who deny climate change might just be changing their minds – maybe.

Safe travels. Ibby Marshall

The event is being held in Spiceball Park, Banbury, at 10.40am on Sunday 9th March and all ages are welcome. There are two options; a 1mile run (£1 entry) and a 2.5 mile run (£3 entry). For further information and to apply, please call Mike Hughes on 01295 252839.

KATHARINE HOUSE ANNUAL SALE

Come and browse for a bargain at our renowned Annual Sale, being held at the Institute, Adderbury on Saturday 15 March, 11am – 2pm. There will be good quality donated items, knitted goods, books, toys, home-made cakes and the lottery booth will also be present, signing up new members! Tea, coffee and lunchtime soups will also be available.

CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

We’re looking for budding artists from local primary schools and local artists to star in our first ever Christmas card competition! There will be two categories – one for primary schools and one open art competition for local artists. If you would like to run a competition in your school, simply ask the pupils to design their favourite Christmas picture and choose the top design to send into Katharine House Hospice. We would also love to receive designs from local artists and art students. Designs for our open art competition should appeal to the whole of our area and not be specific to any one district, and irrespective of faith and culture.

The chosen design for both categories will be printed on a card 126 x 126 mm. Designs should be on square pieces of paper, but any type of medium can be used. Designs should be sent into Katharine House Hospice (East End, Adderbury, OX17 3NL) by 31st March 2014. We will announce the winning design on Monday 7th April, which will be turned into a professional Christmas card and will go on sale in September 2014 to raise vital funds for Katharine House Hospice. The café at Bloxham Mill Business Centre has also kindly offered to hold an exhibition of all the top designs in their café area during April and May for the general public to view.

Update from HS2 Action AllianceMarch has been a busy month for HS2AA and you can find out more about what we have been up to below.

But remember three things you can do to help the campaign1. Sign Up: Make sure all your friends and family who oppose HS2 are signed up as registered supporters of HS2AA. Signing up takes less than 30 seconds at www.hs2aa.org/signup.2. Connect: Follow HS2AA on Facebook www.facebook.com/hs2aa3. Donate: If you haven’t already, please complete and return to us a standing order form for £20 a month. Remember, HS2AA operates entirely by generous donations from people across the country like you. Every penny we receive is spent on campaigning - the more we receive the more we can do. https://hs2aa.workwithus.org/Fundraising/Donate.aspx

Our principal activities in March include: Judicial Reviews

We worked extensively this month with our legal team this month prior to judgement being issued to understand the implications of the court’s decisions on the two legal cases brought by HS2AA. Despite spin from the Government, the decision on the compensation judicial review was a comprehensive victory for HS2AA-the judge ruled the consultation process was unfair and unlawful and ordered a rerun of the consultation process.

We did not win the environmental case, but the judge accepted our application on Friday for the matter to be referred to the Court of Appeal. This decision means we have been cleared for the case to be appealed to a higher court. We are therefore working on preparations for an appeal. More details, including appeal for funds, will follow in the coming weeks.

Parliamentary ActionOur lobbying work with peers saw a debate this month in the House of Lords on the business and environmental costs of HS2. The debate attracted a cross section of peers who are opposed to HS2 and was a useful opportunity to get the Government’s rail minister in the Lords to answer some of the more difficult questions on the project.

We are continuing to engage with MPs of all political parties, as well as engaging with think tanks and members of the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments. Our program of regular written briefings to MPs and Peers is key to ensuring the case against HS2 is well understood across the political spectrum. We are also meeting regularly with MPs and their researchers to push the case against HS2.

Stage 1 Consultation ResponsesWe provided detailed feedback on the compensation and “safeguarding” consultations which closed at the end of last month. We have significant concerns that the Government’s plans to safeguard areas of land required for the construction and operation of HS2 has not been thought through and will be extremely damaging to communities on the line. Both consultation responses can be found on our website.

Stage 2 Compensation ConsultationThe Government appears determined to repeat many of the mistakes and missteps which were seen in its approach to compensation on Stage 1 of the line in its actions for the line proposed between the West Midlands and Leeds/Manchester. We have written to the Chief Executive of HS2 Limited to highlight failings in the current process and are working with other key stakeholders on this process.

Media RelationsWe continue to work extensively with different media outlets to highlight the problems with the HS2 project and the impact on communities which are affected by the line. We are grateful for your continuing support.
