A Message from the Rector The Very Rev. F. Wilson Brown

Dear friends in Christ,I am reflecting on life and thepassing of time. Here, at St.John’s, we have celebratedGraduation Sunday and triedsome small but noticeablechanges to our worship. Wecontinue to pray for and serve anumber of our dear ones who

are ill. Moreover we have endured the death of atleast three of our dear ones; Marilyn Rowe,Virginia Scott, and Louise Robertson.

My family has taken stock of some transitions. InJune we made a trip to a former congregation thatwe have not seen for twelve years. It was the firstplace I served as rector. Our children were bornthere. Much was the same though they have con-tinued on in mission and ministry. They honoredthe time we spent together and have built upon it.

In July Kara and I celebrated our 25th weddinganniversary and we went to Charlottesville to cele-brate her parents’ 60th anniversary. During thattime our eldest, Kate, had her 23rd birthday.(From Fiddler on the Roof, “I don’t remembergrowing older. When did they?”)

All these happenings and situation have gotten meto thinking about what is eternal and what is not.The apostle Paul, in his First Letter to theCorinthians, famously tells us that faith, hope, andlove abide — particularly love.

Love endures. That is the best part of beingChurch. We exist to share God’s love. We worshiptogether. We care for each other. We reach out tothe needs of the world in God’s name. Loveendures.

We do not endure. At least not in this world.Generations pass. Our ways of doing things comeand go. Institutions rise and fall. Even nationsflourish and wither.

We do things a certain way in the hope of pointingto God’s love. We come together on the Lord’sDay in a beautiful place. The architecture and ceremony combine to point us to the ancient, steadfast, majestic presence of God

Our worship reminds us that God has loved usfrom the beginning. We share, with the originalapostles and with each other, the meal that Jesusinstituted on the night before he died. We gatherremembering that God so loved the world that hesent his Son and that his Son gives us the newcommandment to love one another.

The movie, A Beautiful Mind, has been on TV afew times this summer. At the end of it the maincharacter says this:

“My quest has taken me through the physi-cal, the metaphysical, the delusional andback, and I have made the most importantdiscovery of my career... the most impor-tant discovery of my life. It is only in themysterious equations of love that any logi-cal reasons can be found.”

The Church exists to share God’s love. Ourstrength is in the love that endures. Our hope is inthe love that endures.

Grace and peace,—Wilson+

• Lynchburg Restoration presented a comprehensiveslide show and proposal for cleaning and sealing thebrick work of the church. The proposal included anumber of repair items, including extensive repoint-ing, repair of stairs and walkways and various otheritems. The work would be done in two phases andwould take approximately two months. Jennyhas a contact in the field and will work with Jim to gethim some additional names of people who do thistype of work.• It was noted that Virginia Scott had left somefunds to St. John’s in her will. Lynn Scott had askedthat those funds be used for building upkeep andmaintenance.

• Heather Garrett reported that the income from thesale of the Dowling Property should be coming to St.John’s in the next few months.

Treasurer's Report: J.R. Rodes submitted hisreport in writing. The overall finances for May wereslightly improved from April, though revenue wasstill sluggish.

Head 'em Up and Move 'em Out—Blessing Buckets project begins August 20th

Some of you may remember Trail boss Gil Favorgiving these instructions to the cowhands at thebeginning of the trail drive on the old TV showRawhide. These instructions might also apply togetting the trucks loaded with emergency supplieson the road as soon as news of a disaster hasreached the headquarters of God's Pit Crew inDanville, Virginia. The trucks carry BlessingBuckets to distribute to victims of disasters includ-ing tornadoes, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes.God's Pit Crew reports delivering over 11,000 buck-ets to victims of disasters since November, 2015.

The buckets contain lifesustaining essentials suchas toothbrushes, tooth-paste, water, deodorant, toilet paper, flashlights ,etc. The crew's mission isto deliver hope, healing

and restoration to hurting people in times of crisis. One victim who received a Blessing Bucket said, “Itbrought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart toknow there is still faith and humanity in this world”.

The Outreach Committee is again asking membersof St. John's to help those in need by filling aBlessing Bucket for God's Pit Crew. Empty bucketswith a list of supplies needed to fill it will be avail-able in the Parish Hall starting Sunday, August 20and all buckets will be due back by September 17.If you prefer, you can donate money and Girl ScoutTroop 525 has volunteered to do the shopping and

packing for you. God's Pit Crew says it costs $35 tofill a bucket. You can give a check made out to St.John’s with a notation of “Blessing Buckets” on thememo line or you can take a bucket and fill it your-self. Either way, you will be helping to deliver hopeand caring to victims of disasters in a hurting world.St. John's is aiming to fill 40 buckets this time solet's 'get ready to “Head those trucks up and move'em out.”

Thirty+ years ago Cheryl Miller was driving herson’s dirt bike when she hit the front brake on agravel road was thrown off. The bike landed on herfoot. That injury returned in later years asdeterioration of her ankle and the talus. After yearsof injections and ankle wraps, it became so bad thatsurgery was indicated. She talked with DannyJohnson about his ankle replacement and made anappointment with his doctor at Duke. The doctorsaid that her talus was too bad to handle a replace-ment, but another doctor was trying new and differ-ent surgeries. This doctor had only done three ofthe combined (ankle and talus) surgeries which sherequired. On July 11th, Cheryl became the forthperson in the world to have this surgery. So fareverything is going well, though she reports: “ Wehave a bit of a journey in front of us. David is agreat nurse, with his help and the Good Lord's sup-port I am feeling good about the outcome! The sup-port, prayers and cards from St. John's is soappreciated.” B
