First held in 1909, the Giro d’Italia is a long distance road bicycle stage race held for professional cyclists over a three week period in May and June annually.

The Giro takes place in Italy, but there is a tradition to hold the start of the race in another country. This year the first three stages of the Giro are being held in Ireland, with stages taking in Belfast, Armagh and Dublin.

The Giro is viewed around the world by a potential audience of 800 million.
