Lufthansa Group Joins Tianjin Airport International Logistics Zone

Würth Industrial Park in Shenyang Going Up

In the third quarter of last year Alois Wimmer, Executive Vice President of the Würth Group, and Song Qi, Deputy Mayor, City of Shenyang, laid the corner stone for Phase 1 of the Würth Industrial Park in Shenyang. Phase 1 comprises an investment volume of USD 30m.

Würth Group intends to build production sites meant to serve the Chinese market in several stages. At the beginning, 400 will be employed at this location. The number will be gradually stepped up to 3,000 in the final stage of the extension process. Arnold Fas-teners (Shenyang) Co. Ltd. is the first company to settle down in the Würth Group Industrial Park.

The expected production start for Phase 1 is fall 2008. From prepa-ration of wire, through mechani-

Lufthansa Cargo decided in the third quarter of 2007 to partici-pate in the establishment of the Huayu Aviation Freight Station in the Tianjin Airport International Logistics Zone. Thus, it became one of the leaders among an increasing number of companies locating close to the Airbus A320 final assembly line project and the state’s Civil Aviation Industri-alization Base. Lufthansa Cargo’s CEO, Carsten Spohr said: “The development of Tianjin’s Binhai

New Area has attracted world-wide attention, and Lufthansa is grasping the opportunity to make a positive contribution to avia-tion in Tianjin.”

Huang Xingguo, a standing mem-ber of the Tianjin Committee of the CPC and the deputy managing mayor of Tianjin said the coop-eration of Lufthansa with Huayu Aviation would lift Tianjin avia-tion’s service capacity and the coverage achieved from Tianjin.

administration building will be-gin in 2-3 years.

Deputy Mayor Song Qi underlined the great significance of the investment for the city and the region in the northeast of China: “The Würth Industrial Park is an important contribution to the structural change of our city and of our province.” Alois Wimmer added: “The project Würth Indus-trial Park Shenyang is driven by the vibrant curiosity of the Würth Group about the Chinese market as well as the Chinese culture. ... Both the foundation of the company and the prerequisites for the establishment of a mod-ern and future-oriented produc-tion site could be achieved in record time. For the non-Chinese employees of Würth in the city Shenyang has turned into a sec-ond home town.”

Westfalia Separator Establishes New Base of Operations in Tianjin, China

Career Service China and AGEF Hold Events for Chinese “Trained in Germany” and Planning to Return to China

Westfalia Separator AG, a com-pany of the GEA Group, held the opening ceremony for its new subsidiary Westfalia Separator (Tianjin) Co. Ltd. located in the TMHT, Tanggu, Tianjin on 30th

November. It provides produc-tion, repair and service facilities to Westfalia Separator AG, which can offer its advanced technology products to customers in China and the Asia/Pacific area from this new base.

Acknowledging the growing stra-tegic importance of the Chinese market, Mr. Stefan Rehnert, the CEO of Westfalia Separator AG said, “Westfalia Separator has made a very strong and continu-ous commitment to the Chinese market and its customers, and setting up this workshop is an important step for us in sup-

As of 1st October, 2007 Joeran F. Treppschuh has been serving as Chief Representative for the GMH Group in China, a provider of high end specialty steel products and turnkey projects in such diverse fields as power generation, urban transportation and container transfer.

Educated initially as a Red Cross paramedic, Mr. Treppschuh trained in industrial sales at GMH. Instead of continuing his studies, he, followed the call of the GMH Group’s Klöckner Steel

Trading to Chicago, USA. After 5 years in the US, Mr. Treppschuh arrived in Beijing in May of 2005 as a representative of GMH.

In China, he concentrated on ex-panding GMH group’s activities. A favorite project was the recently completed service depots for the two new Olympic subway lines in Beijing – Line 5 and Line 10. At these depots, an entire subway train is lifted into the air hydrau-lically for a “tire change.” He en-joys coming to German Chamber events, and sees the Chamber as a “backbone for German business in Beijing, whether big or small.”

Appropriate professional qualifica-tions, some practical experience, a confident bearing, and realistic expectations -- that is how many employers describe the qualities of a candidate they would con-sider suitable for their enterprise.

Wang Wei, a consultant at Career Service China’s (CSC) Beijing of-fice, co-located with the German Chamber of Commerce in China • Beijing knows many Chinese who fulfill these expectations – Chi-nese who have studied at Ger-man institutes of higher learn-

ing. “Employers are particularly keen on the technical knowledge gained in Germany” Wang said, “but language ability and the international experience gained are big plusses too.”

Before their return, expectations of these students are adjusted by the CSC and the Association of Experts in the Fields of Migra-tion and Development Coopera-tion (AGEF), the CSC’s partner in Germany. The latter prepares them for the market in China through targeted seminars.

“The questions of salary and of professional development (pro-motion) are usually hotly dis-cussed,” said Antje Löser, who is responsible for these seminars on the AGEF side.

As a result, candidates for employment acquire a more realistic perspective, speeding up their placement. More than 100 returnees have already been placed by the CSC. It has become a widely accepted com-ponent of the German Chamber of Commerce in China’s services. Employers appreciate the trans-

parency of the process. The posi-tions firms offer are posted on a special website at www.getjobs.net. Subsequently, Ms. Wang selects suitable candidates to recommend from a pool of 1,500.

Companies like Volkswagen in Beijing or Würth in Shanghai are regular users of the service. Starting in 2008, Ms. Wang will also be inviting firms in Dalian and Tianjin to take part in dis-cussions about their future staff-ing needs. The dates for these meetings will also be published on the web.

TiNOX at the Solar World Congress 2007 in Beijing, China

Following the 2003 and 2005 Congresses in Sweden and the USA respectively, the 2007 Solar World Congress took place in Bei-jing, China.

Besides celebrating the 50th an-niversary of the International So-lar Energy Society, the congress focused on the role of renewable energy in the economic growth and environmental protection of China. TiNOX and its Chinese partner Beijing Eurocon Solar Energy Tech. Co. Ltd. exhibited their tube collectors, which were demonstrated by the team to many interested visitors.

The fair’s location next to the new Olympic stadium, called “birds nest” due to its eye-catch-ing design, was of particular in-terest. On an area of 258,000m2, 91,000 people will be watching the Olympic Games in 2008.

K e m p i n s k i Ho t e l B e i j i n g Lufthansa Center celebrates 15 years of service. A “Gala Party” for these important an-niversaries took place on 6th December 2007 in the Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center’s Jade Ballroom. Shareholders and representatives of the owner and management company, as well as clients and VIPs gathered for the celebration.

The Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center opened in

1992 and has become a land-mark in China’s capital city. 15 years after the opening, a renovation process is currently underway. a 30.2% increase over 2005. “Volkswagen in China is ahead of its restructuring plan and in the best condition to take up the challenges of the world’s most competit ive market.” said Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Global Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen, while Volkswagen Group China’s President and CEO Dr. Winfried Vahland added, “in addition to outstanding sales, our profitabil-ity has been going up as well.”

TUI China announced the ap-pointment of Thierry Borel as In-bound Director. He takes charge of all Inbound activities except German speaking Europe, Rus-sia and Eastern Europe. These source markets are still overseen by Juergen Kremer, who now also heads Product Development and Tour Operating Short Haul.

Chief Executive Officer of TUI China Marcel Schneider said: “I am delighted to have Thierry

on board and completing our management lineup. Due to our strong growth this year and our ambitious tasks for the future it was essential to bring in more expertise and knowledge. Togeth-er with Juergen and the rest of our team he will not only pursue future growth opportunities in existing and new source markets, but also ensure our high degree of service delivery and quality standards. He is the perfect fit in our team.”

Thierry Borel, a French tourism expert with more than 15 years of industry experience in France and Asia, held various leading management positions at Maison de la Chine and Diethelm Travel Asia previously. He is based at TUI China in Beijing and his appointment was effective 10th December, 2007.

From Guangdong to Xinjiang and from Heilongjiang to Guizhou, KfW Bank Group, funded by the German Federal and State Govern-ments, finances projects in China that reduce environmental dam-age, conserve energy, and stimu-late economic activity. At the China Dynamic Real Estate Exposi-tion’s opening on 4th December 2007, in the Great Hall of the Peo-ple, Tiananmen Square, Beijing, Mr. Arne Gooss, the director of the

Beijing office of KfW Bank Group, presented an overview of the types of projects funded, the is-sues the bank’s programs address, examples of successful projects, criteria for project funding and prospects for the future. In China, KfW Bank Group has financed projects totaling EUR 3.5bn.

Low interest, long-term loans or grants funded by KfW are admin-istered in China by the Ministry

of Finance with KfW representing the German government. Projects are to address pollution and over-exploitation of resources, urban transportation issues, energy use and CO2/SO2 emissions, and inte-grated urban development, with problems of urbanization being the main watchword. Water treat-ment plants, subway projects, rehabilitation of outdated power plants, solid waste disposal, and other urban transportation

projects have been the most com-mon. Criteria include that the projects have model character, and that they be feasible and sustainable. Projects relevant to climate change are currently ap-preciated. Significant additional funds have been released for KfW projects, and a joint Cities Devel-opment Initiative for Asia exists with the Asian Development Bank. Prospects for future projects are, thus, very promising.

At the end of October 2007, Dr. Ulrich Weber, Managing Direc-tor of the Airbus final assembly line project in Tianjin, introduced the project to the German busi-

ness community. Airbus and its Chinese partners picked Tianjin, he said, because of its excellent infrastructure, the proximity of a port, its educational facilities,

In Phase 1 of the project, up to 150

Airbus employees from Europe will be working in Tianjin. At the same time, about 230 Chinese will be trained in Hamburg.

Airbus is operating a joint ven-ture with a Chinese consortium to execute final assembly. The city of Tianjin, AVIC1 and AVIC2 are all parts of the consortium. Airbus holds 51% of the shares. China Hasn’t Lost its Allure - Ingenics

China’s economy is booming – and it’s no secret. Yet this skyrocketing growth points to unique forces and trends – and is riddled with all sorts of challeng-es. Companies jumping on the bandwagon just now first need to figure out their strategic objec-tives. Pinpoint the driving force – cost benefits in production or opening up Chinese markets? The next steps involve scouting sites, organizing joint ven-tures, acquiring permits, planning fac-tories, and running the actual start-up.

“The number one factor in do-ing successful business in China hasn’t changed – know the local rules of the game, and customs, and follow them consistently,” ex-plains Gundolf Müßig, head of the Shanghai office. “Un-derstanding that helps you see through large-scale projects”

Barkawi Shanghai First Time Speaker at Customs & Tariffs 3rd Semi-Annual Meeting

The presence of the international con-sultancy specialized in supply chain management and logistics, Barkawi Man-agement Consulting (Shanghai) Co. Ltd, presented by Mr. Christian Rubenbauer, Manager Barkawi Shanghai, shows the growing awareness and demand of Chi-nese manufacturing companies for quali-fied expertise in the worldwide after-sales service market.

Long customs lead times and regulation quite often ends up in high buffer stocks, to be able to provide an “acceptable” level of customer service. As inventory becomes more expensive in overseas markets due to customs and logistics cost, it ties up working capital and also might become obsolescence. Mr. Rubenbauer empathized: “For Chinese manufacturers it is crucial to implement optimized inventory manage-ment to become a competitive market player and to achieve satisfying business success also outside of China.”

According to Barkawi research, in a growing international service-orientated aftermarket a customized cost-benefit-balanced Inventory Management plays a significant role for primary product manufacturers and after sales service providers as well as customers and suppliers. Therefore 5 major fields of inventory: customer requirements, data, in-ventory utilization, efficient logistics and a planning tool, have to be considered for its management.

1. We can now offer a receipt (fapiao) to our donors through SCF.

2. It is now possible to transfer large donations directly to our pro-gram via the bank account of SCF – also from abroad!

3. While we still do not have any overhead – the SCF does not charge any fees to us – we nevertheless have a more sound basis for the future and have left the ‘grey area’ we used to operate in over the past years.

Our team of volunteers is still running the project and we are still your main contact. Any donor can ask for a look at the bookkeeping regard-ing Project Integration at the SCF in Huangpu District, 88 Zhi Zao Ju Road, 6/F where the main contact person for us is Mrs Liu Shuying.

Your donations are what makes this project possible; this semester you helped sponsor 221 migrant children’s school fees at six Shanghai migrant schools in Minhang and Putuo districts. Thank you very much for your continued generosity!

In his written opening remarks, Premier Minister of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff, mentioned the sponsorship of Deloitte, Siemens, Voith Turbo Scharfenberg und Volkswagen for this important conference which contributes positively to the dialogue between China and Ger-many.

“Intense communication and exchange of ideas occurred throughout the conference. In addition, numerous side meetings happened as well and this is what truly conveys the spirit of this symposium,” said Dirk Haellmayr, head of the Deloitte German desk in Shanghai. Mr. Haell-mayr spoke at the conference about harmonization of accounting laws in the European Union and its future prospects. Next year’s conference is scheduled to be held in Berlin, Germany.

Celebrating Shanghai’s First Hydrogen Refuelling Station

The Linde Group, a world-leading gases and engineering company, is the supplier of gaseous hydrogen to Shanghai’s first automobile hy-drogen refueling station located in Anting New Town.

The Shanghai Anting hy-drogen refueling station was built by Tongji Uni-versity in partnership with The Linde Group. It has the capacity to fuel three fuel-cell buses with 45kg of hydrogen each, or 20 fuel-cell automobiles with up to 3kg of hydrogen per

vehicle. The existence of this state-of-the-art clean energy refueling station is a big step forward for Shanghai in the field of eco-friendly transportation.

In this joint project, Linde also provided the entire engineering de-signs for the construction of the refueling station, and advised on the logistics for the delivery of packaged hydrogen compression, the stor-age facility and the station’s hydrogen dispensing system.

The station’s opening last year was attended by Professor Wan Gang, China’s Minister of Science and Technology, and Hu Yan Shao, Vice-Mayor of Shanghai. Officials from the United Nations Development Program were also present to endorse the Chinese government’s dedi-cation to the establishment of a hydrogen infrastructure in China. The Linde Group was represented at the event by its Executive Director for Hydrogen Solutions, Dr. Joachim Wolf, and Head of RBU Greater China, Steven Fang.

One of the immediate plans for the station is its role in the World Expo in Shanghai. The station will fuel three to six fuel-cell buses commissioned by the United Nations Development Program and the Chinese government that will be showcased as an official form of pub-lic transportation during the World Expo in 2010 in Shanghai. TüV Announces Lab

At our photovoltaic (PV)-Lab we are able to do about 40% of the tests required by the applicable PV qualification testing standards (IEC 61215 Ed. 2 and IEC 61730). Highlights of the lab are the two climate chambers, one for Damp-Heat test (per module 1000 hours at 85C and 85% relative humidity) and the other one for Thermal cycling test (200 cycles per module, where each cycle is 6 hours, at +85 C to -45 C).

The core of each PV-lab is the solar simulator with which the perform-ance of each PV-module is determined before and after each climate stress test. The pulsed solar simulator which is also called a “flasher,” consists of a light source (Xenon lamp) which is mounted in one end of a 7m long black non-reflective tunnel. The module is mounted in the other end of the tunnel facing the light source. The Xenon lamp produces a light pulse of approx. 12ms during which the current-voltage characteristic is determined by means of an electronic load.

We have just terminated the acceptance testing of the flasher with the very positive outcome that all of the highest requirements of the solar simulator standard IEC 60904-9 have been fulfilled.

Panalpina Rail-Air Launches New Intermodal Transport Concept

Panalpina recently introduced yet another unique and innovative transport concept connecting China with Europe, Central Asia and Af-rica (via Middle East) via Urumqi Xinjiang. In order to further enhance Panalpina’s Own Controlled Network, the new Rail-Air service brings cargo originating from the busy industrial areas such as Beijing, Shanghai, and the Pearl River Delta by domestic railway (China Rail Express) to Urumqi.

This new product is launched on the Urumqi-Europe route in order to reach our airfreight hub in Luxembourg on the weekend and to con-nect to Panalpina’s Road Feeder Service network for further distribu-tion within Europe. The Rail-Air service is aimed to be a complemen-tary, but faster product in addition to our proven intermodal service by Sea-Air ex Asia via Dubai to Europe.

The Rail-Air service obviously follows Panalpina’s HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) principles for Eco transport by using cargo consoli-dation and modal shifts to environmentally responsible transport modes thus helping to reduce the related carbon footprints of our customers.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Bruce Bowers, the Regional Chief Ex-ecutive Officer for Allianz’s insurance operations in Asia, and Mr. Su Jiqing, the board member from the Chinese shareholder CITIC Trust, both congratulated Allianz China Life. Mr. Bowers further commented that: “The new branch is evidence of Allianz’s commitment to develop-ing our presence in China market and offering excellent products and services to people in Jiangsu.”

Presence in China Strengthened

EPCOS and Chinese conglomerate Xindeco have expanded their joint venture EPCOS (Xiamen). The joint venture, which was launched at the end of 2005 for the development, has now taken over Xindeco’s entire production facility in Xiamen. This considerably expands the portfolio of EPCOS (Xiamen). EPCOS continues to hold 60% of the shares in the joint venture. Based on its position as a global market leader in aluminum electro-lytic capacitors with screw terminals, EPCOS (Xiamen) was able to suc-cessfully penetrate the Chinese market. For Lie Lin, CEO of the joint venture company, this is a crucial advantage: “EPCOS (Xiamen) allows us to serve the fast-growing Chinese market with these high-quality capacitors that are made at a low-cost, local production base.”

Since October 2007, Roman Lichomski has been the new Chair-man and CEO of GreCon Electronics (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. Mr. Lichomski came to Shanghai as Area Manager China in 2004 to found a subsidiary for GreCon. Only four months after his first visit to China, the foundation process of a WFOE was finished. This was the third subsidiary that GreCon founded besides the subsidiaries in the USA (1989) and Great Britain (1992).

Meanwhile, 12 people have been employed by GreCon Electron-ics (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. who take care of the distribution of the GreCon product range and the after-sales service. Service work mainly comprises the installation of new systems and the maintenance of existing systems. GreCon supplied the first systems to China in 1986. Due to the high number of systems existing in the market, it was inevitable to establish this serv-ice centre in China.

Fagus-GreCon Greten GmbH & Co. KG is a family enterprise which is run by the owners, the headquarters being located in Alfeld/Hanover. Since the foundation of the company in 1911, production has taken place in an architectural masterpiece. The factory building was designed by the famous architect and founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, and is nowadays regarded as the origin of modern architecture. The factory has been a listed building since 1946 and can also be found on the UNESCO’s candidates’ list of World Cultural Heritage. The pro-duction facilities as well as a detailed exhibition are open for public viewing.

Fagus-GreCon is divided into two business divisions in which 340 staff members are employed worldwide. The Fagus division is the leader in the field of development and production of shoe lasts. The GreCon division produces measuring systems for the wood based panel industry and spark detection and extinguishment systems for the prevention of dust fires and explosions.

Spark detection and extinguishment systems as preventive fire protection systems are nowadays imperative. Spark flight in exhaust pipes and conveying facilities can cause dust fires or explosions. GreCon spark detection and extinguishment systems are capable of detecting sparks in exhaust ducts and to extin-guish them in a split second. Spark sensors detect the infrared radiation of glowing particles. In a certain distance from the spark sensors, a dense water mist spray is injected into which the sparks fly and are immediately extinguished. Production can continue without interruption.

Besides a big research & development department, GreCon increasingly relys on after-sales service to guarantee their cus-tomers perfect technical service and support and a high system availability.
