We are encouraged to be rowdy and boisterous, drowning out Haman’s name with boos and groggers. 2) Mishloach Manot – Mishloach Manot are small gift baskets that we deliver to friends and family. We respond to Haman’s evil deeds not with hatred but with thoughtfulness and caring. 3) Seudah – the Seudah is a special feast so that we can “eat, drink and be merry.” 4) Matanot Ha’Levyonim – we are also commanded to give gifts to the poor during Purim to ensure a more just world. Rabbi Lexi Erdheim

Okay, so who’s ready to get dressed in outrageous costumes and masks, eat, drink and be merry, make lots of loud noises, and consume lots of seasonally themed baked goods? No? No takers?

For Jews in New Orleans, Purim can feel like Mardi Gras Part Deux. And while Mardi Gras is wonderful, by the end of it, we are all exhausted and the last thing we want is more debauchery. Purim, though, is different from Mardi Gras in important ways.

There are four mitzvot, or obligations, that we are traditionally expected to fulfill for Purim. These four mitzvot express what Purim is really about. The goal of Purim is not just to enjoy ourselves, have fun and turn things upside down for a night (although those are also important). Each of these mitzvot serves as a kind of tikkun, as a way of fixing or improving the world around us.

1) The Megillah – we gather together as a community to hear the story of Esther read aloud.

3) Seudah – the Seudah is a special feast so that we can “eat, drink and be merry.”

4) Matanot Ha’Levyonim – we are also commanded to give gifts to the poor during Purim to ensure a more just world.

The parties and fun of Purim are not without their purpose. The four mitzvot of Purim push us to respond to the violence and hatred of Haman by creating more love, more joy, and more justice in our world. I hope that everyone will be able to join us at Congregation Gates of Prayer and Tribe’s Adults-Only Purim Celebration on Monday, March 9th from 7-9pm. We will have a hilarious Muppets themed shpiel and megillah reading, lots of food, hamantashen (courtesy of the Sisterhood), and daiquiris. In keeping with the tradition of Matanot Ha’Levyonim, we will be raising funds through a 50/50 raffle for Nechama, a Jewish organization that provides comfort and hope to communities by engaging volunteers in disaster recovery work.

Wishing everyone a chag Purim sameach, a very happy Purim!
