NEWS & VIEWS

4 the gate

Good evening everybodyand welcome to TheCoppice, the home ofHighgate United FC.

We’d like to take thisopportunity to welcome theOfficials, Players andSupporters from today’svisitors Dudley Sports.

It’s not very often our pathscross these days. DudleySports now plying their tradein the West MidlandsRegional League.

LAST TIME OUTWe last played DudleySports in September 2011when they were ouropponents here in the FAVase.

It was a classic cup game, agoal from Steve Jacksonand a brace from full-backBen Judd had given theGate a 3-0 lead, but withjust 7 minutes remainingSumner scored from thepenalty spot and grabbedanother quick goal forDudley to ensure a real nail-biting finish for thenmanager Keith Checketts.

The club would like to say‘Thank You’ to all friends andvisitors both old and new whoattended the Firework Displayand Family Fun Night lastSaturday night - it was a greatnight. We’d also like to say a hugethanks to all the volunteers, without who none of it wouldhave been possible.

THAT’S HALL FOLKS!At last weekend’s FireworkDisplay I finally managed tocatch up with club captainCraig Hall and was saddenedto hear that it looks like injuryhas forced Craig to seriouslyconsider hanging his boots up.

Sad news for both Craig andThe Gate. On behalf ofeveryone here we wish you allthe very best in whatever routeyour football life takes.

LEST WE FORGET (1914 - 2014)I’m sure none of you need reminding that today isRemembrance Day. Due to Saturday’s game beingpostponed the club wish to pay their respsecttonight so please note there will be a minutessilence before tonights kick off.

52014/15

Good evening and welcometo todays visiting OfficialsPlayers and Supporters ofDudley Sports FC pleaseenjoy your short visit to theCoppice, we also welcomeour 3 Match Officials

Hopefully the weather hasbeen kind to us these last 2days and we manage to gettonights match on.

It’s difficult to think that we’vehad all that mild weather andthen when the heavensopened on Friday andSaturday there were puddlesof standing water on thepitch.

I don’t think many gameswent ahead in our league,

although I did notice Villascored three goals... hahacalm down, I mean Pelsall Villawho got their first win, winning 3-1 at Alvis Sporting.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyedwatching the FA Cup lastweekend, to some it mightseem a million years away, but with clubs like Nortonfrom level 8 it shows its notimpossible. it’s a greatincentive for clubs at ourlevel, and hopefully with allthe ground improvementscontinuing here, we’llhopefully be eligible to enternext years competition.

With last Saturday’s gamecalled off and even though it’sin the programme that was

printed, this is our firstopportunity to thankevertbody that came down toour annual Firework Displayand Family Fun Night. It was agreat night with well over 600adults and kids enjoying theevening.

I must also thank everybodywho volunteered their time tohelp out that night, it wouldn’thave been possible withoutyou.

Back to tonight - come onAsh get the lads going andkeep the run on track, let’ssee if we can book a place inthe Semi-Final to face eitherStourport or Bromsgrove

Gates slim victory over adetermined Pilkington XXXside was enough to sendthem to the top of theleague.

Two first half strikes provedenough to edge Highgatehome at the end of this tenseencounter, a Pilkington sidebelying their sixteenthposition in the league tablepushing Gate all the way butunable to add to their lone71st minute goal.

The win extends Gate’sunbeaten league run to sevengames, but on this occasionthe victory came after arelatively poor display againsta physically stronger teamwhich played throughout totheir own strengths up front, going close to snatching alast second equaliser with aheader which grazed theoutside of keeper ConorMcCarthy’s left hand post.

Gate had gone into the matchwith the distinct disadvantageof knowing they had been

named the Division OneOctober team of the month, confounding the jinx that is sooften attached to such anaward but only after survivinga nervous final ten minutes.

Caretaker boss AshleyPulisciano was without centrehalf Dean Curtis, absent onpaternity leave for which theClub sends congratulationson the new born’s arrival, giving a full start to JordanDuncan, whilst Danny Rolfereturned to the right backberth with Nathan Edgingtonback in midfield in place ofKarl King, Luke Hinson,Michael Batchelor and MartinCrawford similarly unavailable.

A scrappy opening period wasa sign of what was to come,Craig Oldfield’s early free kickfor the visitors headed clearby Trevor Edwards, whilst atthe other end RicardoRichards was close to puttingConnor Mooney clear beforecreating space for himselfwith a shot saved by keeperReece Francis at the foot of

the near post.

Scott Turner took the stingout of Odane Barnes’ shot onthe turn, Richards displaying asimilar level of skill byshrugging off defender PhilChesters’ challenge but onlyable to fire low into Francis’hands. Barnes found himselfclear and preparing for a oneon one with McCarthy only tobe let down by a poor firsttouch, and with Duncanhaving to be alert todispossess the dangerousBarnes, Pilkington wereenjoying a good spell ofpressure, McCarthy beinggrateful to Rolfe for being inthe right place to avert thedanger after the keeper hadcome for but missed a highdeceptive cross.

Despite Craig Oldfield“scoring” for the visitors butfrom an offside position Gateat last began to stringtogether a series of passes, possession football down theleft hand side leading to theopening 31st minute goal,

Francis unable to hold on toTom Lacey’s low twenty yarddrive, Richards pouncing atclose range to convert theloose ball.

Duncan reacted to KyleTurner’s determined run witha crucial last ditch tackle,Michael Skerrett skying theresulting corner high overMcCarthy’s goal. Turner madean equally important tackle todeny Jacob Snape, Gate livingdangerously at the back, being prone and forced intomaking unnecessarymistakes. Edwards won theball in the middle of the parkfinding Lei Brown to set upRichards for a daisy cutterdeflected behind off a fellowred shirted player, theultimately uncleared cornerbravely headed in by Laceyamongst flying boots afterRichards had flicked onBrown’s 39th minute cross.

Despite doubling their leadGate continued to lookunconvincing, McCarthysaving at Kyle Turner’s feet

and after Francis had beenforced into making a late savefrom Richards, Gate went in athalf time with CameronKnight on for the injuredNathan Pulisciano and justabout deserving their twogoal cushion but knowingthey needed to work a lotharder to break theresistance of a determinedPilkington outfit.

Immediately after the breakthe impeded Brown was nearto getting his head on Rolfe’scross, Mooney then deliveringa pass headed on by Brownfor Richards’ touch to bedeflected behind. Mooneyappeared to be brought downby Francis’ rugby like tackleonly to be denied the penaltythe offence seemed towarrant, play continuing in adisjointed fashion with Snapeblazing a good opportunityhigh and wide of McCarthy’sgoal.

Richards cut inside aftercollecting Rolfe’s quicklytaken throw-in finishing with awell struck shot hit againstFrancis’ boot, Brown gettinghis legs in a tangle whenapparently through offRichards’ pass then directinga ten yard header off target.Brown’s assist ended withdefender James Lorneycharging down Richards’drive, the centre forward thenheading Rolfe’s cross over thebar.

Scott Turner’s 60th minuteheader landed on the roof ofthe net, but with Gate at lastgetting on top and looking farmore assured they were tohave a let off when Lorneydespatched a free header offtarget. Failing to heed thewarning Gate were to see agoal pulled back, Knight’sattempted 71st minuteheaded back pass falling atthe feet of Barnes who foundhimself in the clear to beatMcCarthy with a cool calmfinish.

McCarthy was quickly off hisline to smother the ball atTurner’s feet, the visitorssensing hesitancy in theHighgate ranks as they wentin search of what was toprove an elusive equaliser.

On the back foot for longperiods and with BrettFellows on for Mooney Gatesought to catch Pilkington onthe break, and should haveput the issue beyond doubtwhen after Francis haddropped Rolfe’s cross underpressure from substitute Liam

O’Shea, Scott Turner’s leftfooted but hurried toe puntwas hit the wrong side of anopen goal.

The miss set up a nervousfinish with Kyle Turner lookingodds on to score until Duncanintervened with a last ditchtackle, and with Francis up forthe final corner of the game aPilkington head glanced theresulting flag kick justmarginally wide of McCarthy’sleft hand upright.

The final whistle blowing onwhat had been a successful ifsomewhat difficult afternoonfor a relieved Pulisciano andhis team..

TWO Goals in the final five minutes saw Highgate record back to back victories for the first time this season against fellow strugglers Dudley Sports on Saturday.

After last week’s succ-cess against Continental Star, Highgate had to recover from a two goal defecit to come away with a deserved three points.

The home side went ahead in the fifth minute through Isherwood who hit a powerful drive goalwards and despite get-ting a hand to it, Perry Cox could not prevent the ball from nestling in the corner of the net.

Gavin Bassford twice went

close with headers before being fouled in the box on the stroke of half time.

Steve Darlington made no mistake from the spot to fire Highgate level at the end of a closely fought first half.

Despite going into the chang-ing rooms boosted by the goal Highgate failed to come out at the start of the second period and conceded twice in the first ten minutes.

Five minutes after the restart Roberts put the home side ahead again and Hughes extended the lead five minutes later.

But a two goal cushion certain-ly flattered Dudley and Highgate pulled a goal back when Bassford drove Robert Higgs’ through ball past keeper Panopoulos.

The impressive Bassford

almost completed his hat-trick soon after but saw his header saved and Tom Rooney fired wide with ten minutes remaining as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.

It came five minutes later when captain Graham Bond pro-vided a perfect pass for Rooney to lob the ball over Panopoulos from 20-yards.

And with the scent of vic-tory in their nostrils Gate con-tinued in attacking mode and were rewarded when Darren Bury scored his first goal for the club after Panopoulos had parried Rooney’s drive into the forward’s path.

Highgate will be hoping to build on their recent run of good form when Massy Ferguson visit Tythe Barn Lane on December 27 (11.30am) before entertaining Continental Star on December 31 (1pm).

The Gate were formed in1948 by a group of orphansfrom the Father Hudsons’ St Vincents Home forWorking Boys on MoseleyRoad, Birmingham who metup following wartimeservice.

After progressing from juniorfootball played at BillesleyCommon in the SouthBirmingham league, Highgatejoined the WorcestershireCombination in 1964.Promoted to Division One atthe first attempt, the clubremained in the league's topdivision for over 40 seasons.

In 1967 Highgate Unitedmade national headlines, unfortunately though this wasdue to a tragic incident.Playing Enfield in the quarterfinals of the FA Amateur Cup,when midway through thefirst half, a lightning strike sawseveral players collapse. Oneplayer, Gates’ centre half TonyAllden, did not recover andtragically died the followingday.

As a gesture of goodwill andsympathy, Aston Villa agreedto host the replay of thegame and game drew anincredible attendance of over31,000.

The most successful period inthe club's history was the

mid- 70s. The club won theleague championship (by nowknown as the MidlandCombination for threeconsecutive seasons between1972 and 1975 and alsoexperienced its best runs inthe FA Cup, FA Amateur Cupand FA Trophy within thisthree year period.

Success was hard to come byuntil off the field following a25 year planning battle, in1997 Floodlights wereeventually turned on at theclubs Tythe Barn Laneground.

More success came Gates’way in 2007, when theybecame the first team fromthe Birmingham and Solihullarea to win the CoventryEvening Telegraph Cup.The following season the clubwere promoted to theMidland Football Allianceafter finishing as Runners-Upin the Midland CombinationPremier League.

Despite a promising firstseason in the MFA, the Gatewere then involved in annualrelegation battles.

In 2013/14 Highgate finishedan incredible 3rd in the MFAbut were relegated by the FAdue to ground regulations tothe newly formed MidlandFootball League Division 1.

THERESERVES

Having already guaranteed theirspot in the Semi-Finals of the Urn,Gerry Corrigan and his HighgateReserves side travel to Fairfieldtoday in a bid to get a firm grip onthe league title too.

Fairfield Villa currently sit top ofthe pack, courtesy of havingplayed one more game than theGate. But The Gate are also ridinghigh undefeated, so that looks tobe terrific battle over there.

With the Reserves playing so well,it was inevitable that Gerry hasreceived one or two enquiries, including a seven-dayer from anMFL League 2 side for topmarksmen Jamie Smith.

To Jamie’s credit and through hisdesire to remain faithful to Gerryand The Gate, the enquiry wasbounced straight back!

All the best today lads!

LOST IN THE BLANK COUNTRYIn Contrast to The Reserves, TomHughes’ young and mostlyinexperienced Youth side arefinding the step up to the Floodlitleague a little tough at themoment.

The side which consists 90% of 16year olds, battle hard but as yetare having very little joy.

The latest disappointment wasWednesday nights 5-1 defeat atthe hands of fellow strugglersDudley Town, who prior to themidweek game had only managed4 goals in 9 games.

The defeat was a bitter blow forTom and his side who travelled tothe Black Country hoping torecord a league double, havingalready defeated Town 3-0 early inSeptember.

As Tom says, “It’s a fast learningcurve for the young lads, havinghad such a good season in theCentral Warwicks last year, this isa massive step-up. We need tostick together and work hard as aunit ...but, we’ll get there”

Next up for the Youth is high flyingWrens Nest, here at The Gate thiscoming Wednesday (7.45pm KO)
