ommunity First Foundation has been supporting Denver-area communities for nearly

35 years. But we’re not looking backwards—we’re always looking ahead.

That’s why we’re calling this Benefit Report The Future of Philanthropy. Inside this

piece, we share the steps we’ve taken to help the nonprofit sector, Denver communities,

and our programs move forward.

Although 2009 was marked by the challenges of the recession, many nonprofits

and individuals responded by redirecting their energy to essentials. We, too, have

taken this approach.

The purpose of our signature initiative, Nonprofit

Preservation, is to prepare nonprofit organizations for the

future. Sixteen organizations chose to build endowments

through our fourth Endowment Challenge Grants

program. We are so impressed with their dedication to

balancing immediate needs with future needs in a

challenging economy. By year-end 2009, we are managing

$12 million in total endowment funds for 65 organizations

who joined an endowment program in the last five years.

In 2009 we also chose to increase our focus on

GivingFirst, our e-philanthropy program, and recorded the best year yet: more than

$1.1 million in online donations processed through GivingFirst.org for Colorado

nonprofits. We ended 2009 with $48.5 million in assets, up $4.5 million from the

previous year, and awarded $3.3 million in grants to strengthen the community.

As always, thank you so much for your support and we are grateful for the

opportunity to work together to improve quality life in our communities.

Here’s to the future!

Nonprofit Preservation Initiative:Supporting Nonprofits for the Long-Term

ive years ago, Community First Foundation

launched an initiative that supports the long-term

health of local nonprofits. In 2009, the initiative featured

three parts:

• Endowment Challenge Grants, a matching grant

program that is helping nonprofits build endowments.

• GivingFirst, an online giving program (see pages 4 & 5),

that helped 223 nonprofits receive $1.1 million in

donations.

• Nonprofit Programs and Services, featuring

Strengthening Partners Grants, educational seminars and

mentoring for the Foundation’s nonprofit fundholders.

Foundation Helps Preserve Nonprofitswith Endowment GrantsIn the last year, Community First Foundation continued

to help nonprofits through its Endowment Challenge

Grants program. A fourth grant program was founded to

encourage nonprofits to build permanent pools of funds

called endowments. Over time, this type of fund can

provide a valuable revenue source and make nonprofits

more financially stable.

The Foundation’s program matches fifty cents for

every dollar a nonprofit raises for an endowment, up to

$100,000. For additional support, the Foundation also

guarantees a 5% return on funds raised during the first

two years.

Sixty-five nonprofits have chosen Community First

Foundation to help them build brighter futures through

endowment growth. Some of these nonprofits are in the

building stage while others are already benefiting from

endowment earnings.

Local Nonprofit, RMPAT, SuccessfullyBuilds EndowmentEstimates show that one in three children in Colorado is

unprepared for school—setting the stage for a lifetime of

disadvantage. Children from high-risk, low-income or

minority families face even greater obstacles.

Rocky Mountain Parents as Teachers (RMPAT), a

Colorado nonprofit based on a successful national model,

works to change these statistics. They

run a comprehensive home visitation

program that educates parents about

child rearing and provides ongoing

support.

RMPAT has supported more than

1,900 children since its founding 20

years ago. But without a reliable way to

sustain their programs, they have

concerns about future funding. They decided to join

Community First Foundation’s endowment-building

program to be less reliant on grants for daily operations.

“We were drawn to the 5% interest guarantee and

the number of respected organizations involved in the

program,” said executive director Ricki Feist. “In time,

our endowment will help us be more self-sufficient and

pay for expenses—like rent and salaries—that do not

attract donors or qualify for grants.”

To build its endowment, RMPAT held a special

event that celebrated both its founder and 20th

anniversary. “In these economic conditions, we were

elated to receive enough donations to not just meet, but

exceed our endowment goal,” Feist said.

Jewish Family Service of Colorado joined the Foundation’s first

Endowment Challenge Grants program in 2004. In just a few years they have been able to useendowment earnings to fund their mental healthservices. These services have been in high demand

as the economic downturn created new stressors for families.

The following organizations, called nonprofit partners, held

funds at Community First Foundation as of Dec. 31, 2009.

We value these partnerships and support their meaningful

contributions to the community.

Grant Program Supports Nonprofit LeadersIn 2009 the Foundation offered Strengthening Partners Grants for

nonprofit partners to receive consulting services for executive

leadership development. Twenty-four organizations participated,

receiving up to $5,000 each, for guidance in areas such as

leadership transition, consensus building, and leading in a down

economy.

"As a new executive director, the Strengthening Partnersgrant has been invaluable for me. We were able to hire aconsultant not only to ensure a smooth leadership transition, but to strengthen our organizational practices."Katie Navin, Executive Director, Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education

Educational SeminarsAs a benefit to nonprofits that hold funds at the Foundation, we

offer complimentary seminars on a variety of topics. These well-

received seminars give nonprofit staff the opportunity to advance

their skills when the cost of

training can be a barrier. Classes

in 2009 featured expert speakers

GivingFirst.org Online Donations Increase Nearly 30%

he year 2009 marked the strongest year so far for

GivingFirst.org, the Foundation’s online giving resource.

Donations exceeded the one million dollar mark,

representing a nearly 30% increase over the

previous year.

That influx of generosity, combined with 53

more nonprofits joining the site, resulted in

$1.1 million in online donations for 223

nonprofit organizations.

Tracking the TrendsStatistics and surveys gleaned through

GivingFirst.org provide the Foundation with

compelling information about online giving

patterns in Colorado.

In its latest report, called The Future of Giving,

the Foundation compared annual trends and

provided an outlook for online giving

in coming years.

For example, we found:

• More donors gave gifts in 2009,

but in smaller amounts than the

previous year.

• The majority of donations are given

in November and December.

• Interest in recurring donations, an automated

way to give regular gifts, is increasing.

Findings like these help the Foundation

guide nonprofits on how, when and why

to promote online giving.

“We’ve had great success with the recurring donation feature on GivingFirst.org. It helps people give smaller amounts over time rather than in one big chunk.Dan HanleyDirector of Development and CommunicationsBoulder County AIDS Project

A Modern Gift ExchangeIt’s not every day that a kid gives up birthday gifts to help

others. But that’s just what a boy named Spencer did for his 7th

birthday celebration.

The East Coast boy had just returned from an exciting trip to

Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he snowboarded for the first

time. Realizing that he didn’t

really need presents for his

upcoming birthday, he and

his mother Kristen came up

with a plan. “He wanted to

give to others,” Kristen said,

“and decided to share the

outdoors experience. It was

very meaningful for him.”

Spencer asked friends to

donate to SOS Outreach, an

outdoor adventure program

for youth, in lieu of birthday

gifts. The process was easy

for both him and his friends:

Using the Internet and

GivingFirst.org, he was able

to share both information

about SOS Outreach and

direct friends to give their

gifts online. “I hope that

other kids have a chance to

find out how cool

snowboarding is and how

much fun you can have!"

said Spencer.

Invest in Kids Raises $42,900Through GivingFirst.orgAccording to Invest in Kids, a nonprofit that focuses on the needs

of vulnerable families, 16% of Colorado’s children live in poverty

and 25% qualify as low income. Invest in Kids partners with

local communities to improve the well-being of these families in

Colorado through research-based programs.

Before joining GivingFirst.org in 2007,

Invest in Kids was unable to receive online

donations. But, after two years of incorpo -

rating online giving into their fundraising

efforts, Invest in Kids ended 2009 with an

impressive total of $42,900 in online

donations.

“The benefit of joining GivingFirst is very

quantifiable,” said Lisa Merlino, executive

director. “It is

absolutely critical to

small and midsized

nonprofits because

we simply don’t have

the resources to build

our own online

donation system. The

program helps us

bring in more money

and expand our

impact.”

Invest in Kids can serve one child for an

entire year at the cost of $125. By using

GivingFirst.org, Invest in Kids saved $1,287

in credit card fees in 2009. “Because of these

savings, 10 more children in Colorado have

access to our programs,” said Merlino.

“It is absolutely critical to small and midsizednonprofits because we simply don’t have theresources to build our ownonline donation system.Lisa Merlino Executive DirectorInvest In Kids

ommunity First Foundation helps individuals, families and groups support charities and issues

they care about. One popular method for charitablegiving is the Donor Advised Fund. This type of fundhelps a person or group donate systematically to oneor more charities. CommunityFirst Foundation manages the fund, providing fulladministrative support.

Donor Advised FundHelps GrandsonFulfill Grandfather’sWishes Many of us have heard the

phrase “those who can’t do,

teach” when it comes to the

teaching profession.

Former teacher, university

dean and author Lindley Stiles

heard this remark many times. In

fact, Stiles passionately opposed

this attitude, and dedicated his

later years to change it.

Stiles, who received his

undergraduate and graduate

degrees from the University of

Colorado (CU), approached his

alma mater to promote a concept

he dubbed “The Best Should

Teach.” Stiles believed that

teaching is the one profession that nourishes all others—and,

therefore, should be occupied by the most talented people. CU’s

School of Education and Graduate Teacher Program adopted his

concept and created an initiative to recruit, support and reward

excellence in teaching.

When Stiles passed away in 2008, he named his grandson

Brian Good to carry out the charitable wishes outlined in his

will. “I am excited to be able to keep my grandfather’s dream

moving forward,” said Good, who created

a special Best Should Teach committee that

includes his mother, aunt, CU faculty and

Dean of Education.

To help manage and distribute the

funds, Good created a Donor Advised

Fund through Community First

Foundation. The new “Best Should Teach”

Fund allows Good to advise how grant

disbursements are made from the fund

and receive support and expertise from

Foundation staff.

“‘The Best Should Teach’ Fund

will help more universities adopt

my grandfather’s philosophy about

teaching,” said Good. So far, three

more universities have developed

programs based on the philosophy.

Although taking on the

responsibility of his illustrious

grandfather’s mission was

originally daunting, Good says

that helping his grandfather

and the teaching profession

“is a privilege and an honor.”

Community First Foundation is

honored to partner with Merrill

Lynch to participate in their

Community Charitable Fund

Program. The program allows

Merrill Lynch customers to use

their Merrill Lynch financial

advisor to create Donor Advised

Funds at leading community

foundations like Community

First Foundation. The

Foundation looks forward to

supporting the philanthropic

wishes of Merrill Lynch clients.

Community First Foundation keeps a pulse oncommunity needs and charitable programsthat enrich the community. The following arehighlights of programs we helped fund in2009.

Children Learn What MakesThe World Go ’RoundWhat’s the best way to learn about business? Run your

own company! That’s the theory behind “Young

AmeriTowne,” a novel program developed by the Young

Americans Center for Financial Education.

Young AmeriTowne is a child-friendly program that

helps more than 18,000 5th grade children per year

learn topics such as business and economics. Lessons

prepare students for the most exciting part of the

curriculum: operating a life-like town.

Located in Young Americans’ Cherry Creek

building, this make-believe town was constructed

to function like a real town, with 17 businesses

and services. A second “town” in Belmar reaches

even more students.

To enlighten children on the importance of

charitable giving, Community First Foundation

funds a philanthropy portion of the curriculum

at Belmar through a $10,000 annual grant.

Students are taught the meaning of philanthropy,

how to give wisely, and how they can commit

“time, talent, or treasure” to benefit the

community.

During a hands-on “work” day at Young

AmeriTowne, children select one of six real charities to

receive a Young AmeriTowne dollar. Community First

Foundation adds real grant funds to each dollar.

Since 2004, the Foundation has granted more than

$72,000 to support philanthropic learning at Young

AmeriTowne.

Grant Helps Denver Drug StrategyPromote Safer CommunitiesNo child, adult, or family can build a strong community

when youth are at risk or battling substance abuse.

To address substance abuse and create safer

communities in Denver, Community First Foundation

provided a $14,000 grant to the Denver Office of Drug

Strategy (DODS) with another $10,000 planned for 2010.

This grant was dedicated to support a strategic plan to

help DODS strengthen the relationship between nonprofits

and government agencies, resulting in an additional

government grant of $400,000 for DODS’ work.

“As a result of the good work we were able to

accomplish with support from the Community First

Foundation grant,” said division director Karla

Maraccini, “the state has provided us with a funding

opportunity to double prevention efforts with the

Colorado Prevention Partnerships for Success program

and bring on additional staff.”

With this program, Denver area youth can live in a

safer, substance-free community.

Volunteers from a Boys & Girls Club paint faces at a DODS event to promotesafe and healthy behaviors.

In 2009, students at Young

AmeriTowne selected the

following charities to receive

donations totaling $1,354:

Stephen T. Marchello

Scholarship Foundation,

Colorado Lions Camp,

Colorado Homeless Families,

Colorado Cancer Research

Program, Butterfly Pavilion

& Insect Center, Tennyson

Center for Children.
