GROUP DISCUSSION:

QUESTION: What kind of spaces do students need in learner-centered, personalized environments?
WRITTEN COMMENTS:
• Inviting space
• A place to spread out
• High amount of surface area for spread out work
THIS IMAGE IS INVITING & I WANT TO SPEND TIME & EXPLORE
• Students taking ownership of what is displayed on walls. Still monitored by teacher.• See a correlation with this and flexible/adaptable• Amy sees learner-centered as classroom areas and flexible/adaptable as common
spaces• Placement of some programs, like CTE, should be more visible and celebrated, not
down at ends of school disconnected from other spaces.• Showcase excellent and exciting Capstone programming• Wow space• Students visible, learning - to pique interest and give exposure• One teacher noted that she did not like the images that looked “sterile” or
“institutional”• Amy spoke to the image she selected (w/circular stools) that shows three options/
settings in the same learning space. Also likes glassed-in break out room• Sense of fun and whimsy• Inviting to students with age appropriate colors• Fun and whimsy• Outdoorsy• Not too trendy (i.e. colors)

QUESTION: How do we design learning environments that supports the biological, social, and emotional rhythms of students, staff and teachers?
WRITTEN COMMENTS:
• Light! Showcases natural beauty• Entertainment• Art• Game room • Pool Table• Board Games
• Fresh Air• Structure of schedules to explore
natural world• Outdoor classroom • Balance of nature and tech• Smaller ‘theme based’ buildings
• Daylight
• Plants, greenhouses
• Experience the seasons - breezeways
• If we value outdoor classrooms, then we have to structure schedules around it. (images of outdoor learning were very popular with all groups)
• The school building should be a nice place to be, people should feel good in the space, want to be there. Not necessarily expensive
• A place to have fun, be joyful, let out stress, non-academic

QUESTION: How do we cultivate trust, recognize positive contributions and hard work and engage our community?
WRITTEN COMMENTS:
• Bring community partners to present information
• Many laws in effect that prevent this from happening. (Hippa, FLSA, Ferpa, Food Handlers)
• PandoLabs/PCCAPS collaboration. (Offer office space to prof.)
• Community lecture/sharing stage for lecture up small steps open with tables for drinks etc.
• Everybody wants a bike shop and ski shop.
• Community-tied space in the schools – programming and spaces to accommodate
• Windows spark conversation (seemed to like floor to ceiling glass)
• Guest speakers, lecturers from community, companies using space within the high school, Lassonde Center at the U of U for startup businesses – is there an opportunity for that here?
- Mentorship
- Integration
- Revenue?
• Someone noted that they are running into problems with FERPA and HPPA
• Make it inviting to community

NICE OPEN WINDOWS. LIKE THE FLEXIBLE SEATING. FIXED BENCH COULD ALSO BE A WORK TABLE.
