A real success-story is car2go in Madrid. Launched last year in November with 500 smart fortwo electric drive vehicles and a home area of 53 km² (this is the area within in M30), we have today more than 112.000 members. They drove more than 5.8 million kilometers. Our car2go members saved more than 568 tonnes CO2 (compared to the normal smart fortwo vehicle). The main age group corresponds to the digital natives (36%), known as Generation Y, aged between 26 and 35 years, while another third of users are people between 36 and 49. Primarily car2go gets used to move through the afternoon until midnight, with peak usage especially from 12.00 to 15.00 and 18.00 to 21.00. What is special in Madrid? The company has built its own recharging hubs where all car2go operations and maintenance of 500 vehicles in the fleet are made. This is worldwide a unique pilot project. Today, Madrid is ranked as the city with the highest number of users per vehicle, and records levels of use that have exceeded the most optimistic forecasts of the company.

And there is another very important factor which will change especially the future of mobility. It’s autonomous driving. About this we can already read numerous articles and see concept cars of big automobile manufacturers e.g. Daimler which by the way car2go belongs to. It will change also the mobility behavior of people. Mobility especially shared mobility will be as flexible as it can be. Coming back to the sharing economy related the mobility sector. A question which is frequently asked is: Why is an automobile manufacturer like Daimler developing car2go and isn’t it a threat for the core business “selling cars”? The answer is very simple. car2go is Daimler's customized solution for the modern problems of urbanized mobility. The company wants to not only keep individual mobility accessible, but also to make it flexible and sustainable. Because of the simplicity of the concept, the low-threshold access to transportation, and the potential benefit for customers, the concept of car2go offers huge business potential for Daimler. And there is a second important point. Mobility concepts are not a threat, they are an important supplement to the core business, which is building and selling cars. The desire to own a car will remain in many parts of society worldwide, but Daimer realized that we were not reaching selected target audiences. Among those are people who do not own a car because of financial or other reasons, such as a shortage of parking spaces.
