Strategic Planning

What I asked last year…….

• Given our current faculty, facilities, revenues and affiliations, are we organized in a way to assure that we can be as great as we want to be in all our missions – teaching, clinical practice, research and community engagement?

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Strategic Planning Process Overview

The planning process extends in two phases from June 2012 to June 2013

Community Engagement:

Top Issues

• Work with our community partners and to learn

their health and healthcare needs.

• Develop a structure and resources for an

enduring local neighborhood health partnership.

• Integrate community initiatives into all other

SOM missions.

• Coordinate these activities with other schools on

campus and Chancellor’s Office.

Research Task Force Themes

• Re-engineer G&C and COMIRB to quality of a

Top Ten Research Institution

• Focus on interdisciplinary TEAM SCIENCE and

INNOVATION– consider reorganization of units

to accelerate collaboration (e.g. Cancer Biology

Department or Neuroscience Institute).

• Support the BEST SCIENCE, not all science –

strategic identification of areas with most

potential

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Research Task Force Themes

• Develop system-wide BIOINFORMATICS, DATA

WAREHOUSING and PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

• Consolidate all HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SCIENCE

researchers to optimize collaboration

• Diversify base funding sources including aggressive

PHILANTHROPY, TECH TRANSFER, and SUSTAINED

HOSPITAL SUPPORT

• Create a MENTORING PROGRAM that ensures

Clinical Case for Change

• A successful clinical enterprise is fundamental to

all School of Medicine missions.

• Clinical governance, funds flow and operations

must evolve to adapt to a healthcare market

moving away from fee-for-service

reimbursement to bundled reimbursement based

on shared outcomes.

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Clinical Guiding Principles

• Practice governance that fosters integration of

clinical care across departments and with our

hospital partners

• Shared discipline of quality, safety and process

improvement enabled by shared governance

and resources and by shared data collection,

management and analysis.

Strategic Planning Process Overview

The planning process extends in two phases from June 2012 to June 2013

Some Interesting Ideas to Explore

• Can we create an endowment to allow our students to attend school at no or radically less tuition?

– Michigan has started this and is 25% there…

• Can we amass the resources to assure that every graduate student and PhD have the support they need to succeed?

• Can we have a clinical incentive plan that rewards quality, safety and academic success in addition to patient revenue?

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

“Opportunity is missed by some people

because it is dressed in overalls and

looks like work.”

Thomas Edison

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Challenges: Cliffs, Curbs, Congress

• Whether or not the “fiscal cliff” is avoided, significant federal budget cuts are inevitable that will stress our ability to meet our missions.

– No resolution: NIH takes a big hit 8.2%

– Resolution: Medicare cut 2%

• IME, GME and Clinical reimbursement are in jeopardy as well

– State funding continuing uncertainty

– Maintaining >8% growth in clinical revenue to support everything else here, and that will not be easy.

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Diversity

• SOM Admissions Office and SOM Office of Diversity and Inclusion have succeeded in increasing diversity in our medical school (with the assistance of President Benson):

39% of Class of 2016 underrepresented in medicine; 57% meet our definition of diversity

Resident URM:

• Pediatrics 13% last two years

• Medicine 10% last year

www.medschool.ucdenver.edu

Professionalism and Respect

• We have a national reputation for collegiality and

collaboration in our professional endeavors – but

we still have work to do.

• The Council of Deans of the AAMC has taken on

the challenge of addressing the issue of Learner

mistreatment.

• We need to continue to promote professionalism

and respect in all our environments.

What I heard today at lunch

“Respect is a close relative of tolerance, and both go a long way to prevent and alleviate the negative interactions between and among people.” Joseph M. Marshall III, The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living

Thank You (not the last slide)

• To the hundreds of people who have participated in the Strategic Planning

so far!!! We know this additional expenditure of time does not come easily

for any of you!

• Senior Associate Deans, Associate, Assistant Deans and Dean’s Office Staff

for their wise counsel, oversight of programs and skill at operations.

• Chairs and Center Directors for their support and collaboration – this

school’s virtual Board.

• Hospital and Health System CEO’s for their support,

• CU Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus administration for their

continued efforts on behalf of our and the other health profession schools.

• UPI for its outstanding work.

• And especially, all our faculty, fellows, residents, students, staff and

administration who, even in the most difficult of times, make this School so

successful and a joy to work at.

We can meet these challenges

together….

And we have a good start.
