THE FUEL LINEISSUE #38 - 31 JANUARY 2004

O.D. NEWS

Our last meeting was very good and the food wasgreat. My thanks to Bob Shawn for making thearrangements, although we did overwhelm the kitchen.

I know that we discussed many things concerningthe Rally, what we would charge and how we wouldencourage volunteers to come forward. Don Rollettepresent several comments and issues concerning thenew site, volunteers, our annual picnic at Wilson'sfarm and ways to control how the annual "fireworks"should be controlled. Don made some very goodpoints and he sparked some very lively discussion. Wewill be working on some of his recommendations andyou will see some positive additions to our club.

I will take the blame for the great price increaseand confusion over how much does a space cost at therally? When we officially got word that we could usethe grassy area we figured the spaces to be larger thanthe spaces on the black top. That led to a charge of$80.00 for the grassy area spaces. After being called

by several club members I quickly understood that thiswas too much to charge and dropped that highercharge. Tony Norton suggested that we charge $25.00for all the black top spaces and $50.00 for all the grassarea spaces. Rationale, larger spaces in the grass area---25ftX25ft vice 18ftX18ft. Sounded like a good idea,so I said OK. I hope this will reduce the stress onmany members and bring our prices down a little forall. Tony will be contacting those who paid the high-er prices and will make refunds.

Thank you for your patience.John

Event: The National World War 2 Memorial willbe dedicated on Saturday, 29 May, 2004, at 2 p.m.Gates will open at 11 a.m. Tickets are required and pri-ority goes to the WW2 generation. Two hours of live-ly pre-ceremony entertainment beginning at noon willtake attendees back to the wartime era through music, video images, newsreel clips, and reminiscences of thetime. Big band and swing music will be highlightedalong with a patriotic finale. Musical groups from thearmed forces will entertain. Coinciding with the dedi-cation will be "Tribute to a Generation: NationalWorld War II Reunion," a major four-day event pro-duced by the Smithsonian Institution's Center forFolklife and Cultural Heritage, in partnership with theAmerican Battle Monuments Commission. FromThursday, May 27, through Sunday, May 30, theReunion will take place on the National Mall between3rd and 7th Streets, in a series of tented pavilions andstages, including a military vehicle display "motorpool". During the dedication ceremony on the 29th,20,000 chairs will be set up in the Reunion area with alarge screen for viewing. On Monday, 31 May therewill be a WW2 parade down Constitution Ave from0830 to 1100 sponsored by the WW2 Veterans ParadeTask Force.

Vehicle Participation: The Smithsonian is request-ing numerous WW2, U.S. military vehicles to partici-pate in the motor pool display. An area will be desig-nated as the WW2 Motor Pool. Vehicles will have tobe brought on site either Tuesday afternoon 25 May, orWednesday morning. Once on site, the vehicles willremain the entire 4 days (27 thru 30 May). The motorpool will be open for display from 1100 to 1900 eachof the four days. The motor pool will be surroundedby a fence with only one entry point which will beclosed during non display hours. Vehicle owners donot have to be there all four days. Club members, including those who do not have a vehicle on-site andselected reenactors will man the motor pool to answerthe public's questions and monitor the vehicles. At1900 each day the vehicles will be covered/securedand the entrance will be closed. Twenty-four hour

security to the event area will be provided by the eventorganizers. There will be several period canopy/cam-ouflage net break areas with table and chairs in themotor pool. Lunch for participants will be provided bythe Smithsonian event organizers. I will be onsite allfour days. Vehicles can be moved off site on Mondaymorning and participate in the parade if the ownerwants to.

Participant Registration: Each vehicle and clubparticipant/reenactor manning the motor pool must beregistered in advance. Only WW2 U.S. vehicles willbe included (other vehicles can participate in theMonday parade). Duplication of vehicles is OK, i.e.numerous jeeps because of their different markingsand configurations. The Virginia Museum of MilitaryVehicles will be providing some armored vehicles. TheSmithsonian will provide signs for each vehicle(type/name of owner, etc). I am looking to fill themotor pool with vehicles from the local area first. Ifnot enough register, I will look to other MVPA clubsoutside our area. Participants must register by givingme the following information by 16 Feb 04. Owner'sname, type and year of vehicle. Once we have estab-lished the complete list, I will provide additional infor-mation as it becomes available. There are still someunanswered questions regarding displays with thevehicles/weapons etc which have to be determined. My contact information is: Tim Ketchum, (703) 590-4960, email [email protected].

NATIONAL WWIIMEMORIAL

"It could beworse…"

The otherday I wastalking toCheryl, a sec-retary in ourfield office atPortsmouthN a v a lS h i p y a r d ,which isa c t u a l l ylocated in

Kittery, Maine, not Portsmouth, New Hampshire.Interestingly, Norfolk Naval Shipyard is located inPortsmouth, Virginia. Hey, this is the Government, youknow. But I digress.

Anyway, I remarked as how it had been 70 degreeson one Sunday and the following Sunday it was 7degrees. Sharon told me it had been subzero all weekat the Shipyard, and that night the forecast called fortemperatures of 25 below zero, not even accounting forwind chill. So I began to think it wasn't so cold inNorthern Virginia after all.

I went skiing for the first time in about seven yearson 19 January, and was disappointed in myself becauseI had fallen a couple of times while I was trying toregain my "ski legs". While riding the lift up to the topfor the last run of the day, I noticed below that belowme, the Ski Patrol was rescuing two skiers that hadinjured themselves. So, I thought, maybe I didn't do sobadly after all, since I avoided a ride in the rescue sled.Building on the theme that "it could be worse," I waslooking through my files (actually, I probably resem-bled a pig rooting for truffles) at work in search of afunny cartoon that I had promised to find for a co-worker, when I came across the following excerpt fromthe October 17, 1989 Wall Street Journal. I had com-pletely forgotten about it, but I enjoyed re-reading it somuch that I thought I would share it with you:

"MANAGERS EXECUTED FOR SHODDYQUALITY IN CHINA"

(Beijing)-"Eighteen factory managers were executed

for poor product quality at the Chien Bien RefrigeratorFactory on the outskirts of the Chinese capital. Themanagers, 12 men and 6 women, were taken to a ricepaddy outside the factory and unceremoniously shot todeath as 500 plant workers looked on.

Minister of Economic Reform spokesman, Xi TenHuan, said the action was required for committingunpardonable crimes against the people of China. Heblamed the managers for ignoring quality and forcingshoddy work, saying the factory's output of refrigera-tors had a reputation for failure. For years, factoryworkers complained that many component parts didnot meet specification and the end product did notfunction ad required. Complaining workers quoted theplant manager as saying "Ship it." Refrigerators areamong the most sought after consumer items in China.Customers, who waited up to five years for their appli-ances, were outraged. The executed included the plantmanager, the quality control manager, the engineeringmanagers, and their top staff."

Well! That gave me a new perspective! When youare having a bad day at work, remember this story andtake heart in the thought that things could be worse. Awhole LOT worse!
