On May 17th we once again pulled out of the Boland home driveway, with our Expandable Hybrid Wilderness camper trailing behind us. Where was the destination this time? Giant City State Park, located in the Shawnee National Forest. It would take us 6 ½ hours to get there but we were fully prepared!

We arrived at the campground, unloaded the van, set out bag chairs, made a fire, set up the tent and ate dinner. Originally we would arrive on Friday and leave on Tuesday but we ended up getting down there a day early and staying a full 5 nights! The weather was warm until about Sunday when we got some soaking downpours with the cold front that moved in. Truly, Monday and Tuesday where the gem days with highs of both 75 degrees.

On this camping trip we did over 9 ½ miles of hiking. We climbed rocks, went exploring, and shot some scenes for a new movie that we are making. Though because southern Illinois is going through a bit of a drought the ticks are REALLY BAD! Everyone in the family had a least 3 ticks found crawling on them or already imbedded in them.

The hiking trails were absolutely amazing. There were high bluffs, small caves and beautiful trees. While on the trails we needed to watch out for copperheads - a poisonous snake that breeds down south – in Illinois! So we really couldn’t go exploring in any caves because that’s where the snakes would be, hibernating until early June.

Not only did we need to be weary of copperheads and ticks, we found out the day we left that we needed to be alert for black widows. We found a young female black widow in our tent (sleeping over my head) and killed it then brought it to the visitor’s center and got the spider confirmed as a black widow!

At meal times, it was team effort with someone doing meat, another person doing fruits and vegetables, somebody setting the table and of course, the clean-up crew! After the sun would set every night we would have a bonfire. This time of the day consisted of marshmallows, s ‘mores, music and some of “Dad’s Jingles”.

This camping trip was a BLAST! We are done camping until September, when we’ll go to South Dakota to Mount Rushmore and the Bad Lands! So until next time…

Little Britches Author: Ralph Moody Reviewed by: Josiah Eckert

Ralph Moody is the main character and protagonist in his autobiography, Little Britches. It is the story of his life all the way until he became the man of the house. The book doesn’t have a main plot; it is just assorted stories and family history of his childhood and their ranch life. The story goes from 1906 till he is about fourteen or fifteen. The main characters are Ralph, his dad Charles, his mom, his sister Grace, his younger brother Hal, and the Aultlands. Ralph narrates the story, making it 1st person. The story starts in New Hampshire, when Ralph is about eight years old. They then move to Colorado, right near Denver where their cousin Phil told them he could a nice house that they could live in, that would have plenty of livestock, crops and food to make their life happy and prosperous. When they went and found only a small, beaten down shack, Mr. Moody was going to go right back to New Hampshire, but Mrs. Moody told him that some time and effort would make the place decent. So they fixed it up and made it quite a nice house, and their Dad started purchasing some animals and farm equipment. The Aultlands, a farming couple and their twenty year old daughter, lived near to them. They were very kind to them and gave them farming things and food and other assorted stuff. With all this, the Moody family got off to a decent start. Ralph and his siblings started to attend a nearby school and Ralph had a rough time of it at first, because his Mother told him not to fight, and there were several bullies who gave him a hard time. He didn’t have a hot temper, but he wanted respect from people, and it got to be too much. He decided that he was going to fight, and licked the main bully. His mom was shocked, but his dad seemed to quietly approve of him fighting for his reputation, and after being told by Ralph that he licked the bully, he said it was good. One day a group of cowboys rode by and controlled their horses with skill and joy. His dad got a horse they named Fanny and who was very strong spirited. She gave all of them quite a hard time, but Ralph managed to gain her confidence after a bit. He got to be able to ride a horse very well and had several jobs that helped his family considerably. Many things happened, and he ended up working at a ranch for a kind man, and found the cowboys that had so inspired him before working there, too. They took to him very well and helped him get a very strong and wild horse broken and trained. Due to a lot of time with the best cowboy there who was called Hi, he became quite skilled and impressed his family. He then took part in a competition and due to his skill with Hi, he won first place. His family, however, had to move to the nearby town of Littleton because they didn’t have enough money to stay there. Mr. Moody got a good construction job and made some good money. His dad didn’t live much longer, but died of pneumonia. His mother also had a sickness in her arm and had to go away for about four weeks. When she came back, they were seated around the supper table, and his mother nodded to him to pray, just like she had always nodded to his father. And that was when he became a man. There are many conceivable themes in the book like perseverance, kindness and responsibility. Mr. Moody is a very intelligent and well opinionated man, and Ralph gets many valuable words from him. Unfortunately, the author’s worldview was not specified. The book was interesting and a good read, but there was some language in it.

Harvey, Illinois, My Hometown By Jennifer C. Medlen How many people actually study the history of their own hometown? Before now, I never thought it to be important. My name is Jennifer Medlen. I live in Harvey, Illinois. This is just a snippet of what I found out about my city. Harvey was founded by Turlington W. Harvey. Mr. Harvey and Mr. D.L. Moody were friends, working together at the YMCA in Chicago where Mr. Harvey was president. He wanted to establish a Christian community . This city was intended to be a “Temperance Town”. A covenant clause included on each deed and title issued stated, “…no intoxicating drinks, gambling or immoral practices…”. If the subject failed to uphold this commitment, their deed or title could be revoked. Wow! I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this. I mean, can you imagine a clause like that now-a-days? Harvey upheld strict enforcement of its “clause” for about four years but then things started to change. The downfall of Harvey began in 1895 when residents voted by a slight majority to license saloons. By 1940 there were 2 saloons in operation. Now, in the year 2012, liquor is sold in nearly every store in town. Harvey is now known as a low-income, high-crime, less-than-desirable city. Unfortunately, Harvey doesn’t have enough police officers to combat the vast amounts of crime. This leads me to ask what I can do to bring Harvey back to its original Christian foundations . I encourage you to take the time to look into the history of your own city and see what you can do to make a difference right where God has placed you.

No Man By Hannah Marks No man could make the earth and sky, No one could tell the birds to fly, It's more than impossible and that's why, God did it, not I. Not any man could always see, To guide the path of history, Forgive our sins and set us free, So God did it, not we. Payment for sin was a real must, But in ourselves we could not trust, Only in Christ are we truly just, Yes, God did it, not us.
