was closed until 1979, when the City of Dallas enacted a city-wide plan that proposed restoration and renovation of the old Bath House. On August 21, 1981, Dallas celebrated the reopening of the building as the Bath House Cultural Center, the first neighborhood cultural center of the city.

As the Bath House completes 38 years of arts and cultural programming, more art patrons have walked through its doors than did long-ago swimmers. The building houses an intimate 116-seat theater, gallery spaces, the White Rock Lake Museum, and a lake-level multi-use area for art programs. Today, the Bath House Cultural Center proudly serves as one of the centers overseen by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs.

From Showers to Art Spaces

White Rock Lake Park was once farmland streaked with creeks that wound through it down to the Trinity River. In the early 1900s, Dallas leaders, looking for a dependable source of water, created a lake fed by White Rock Creek. By 1911, a dam was completed and the lake began to fill. No sooner had the new municipal reservoir filled than swimmers thronged its shores. August 1930 saw a sand beach and swimming area open on the east shore of the lake. The municipal bath house offered lockers, showers, changing rooms, swimsuit rental, and concessions for those who came to swim, play, picnic, attend concerts, dance under the stars, sail on the Bonnie Barge, or marvel at beauties in pageants.

The Bath House remained a social and recreational center until September of 1952, when swimming in the lake was discontinued. The Bath House
