SCAM ALERT By Shirley Clay, Resident Counselor

Current Scams: What can be more annoying or frustrating than those phone calls on your cell or land line from an unknown, and sometimes local, number that catches your attention with “Hello, I need to speak with you immediately about a problem with your credit card.” What could be more anxiety producing than that! These calls are usually robocalls (an

automated telephone call that delivers a recorded message) and are targeting specific numbers or area codes randomly. The robocall message will continue asking you to press “1” to be connected to an operator. The caller wants you to stay on the line and speak with someone on the other end usually for one of two reasons:

1) To actually get private information from you to use in a financial scam, or 2) To solicit your purchase of their services to negotiate a lower rate on your

credit card interest rate; of course they ask for payment up front for that service.

If you get a call like this, the best case scenario is to hang-up immediately before giving any response, and call the number on the back of your credit card to see if there are any legitimate problems with the card. There are some apps which may be downloaded to your cell phone such as TrueCaller, RoboKiller, Mr. Number, Nomorobo and Hiya to notify and block some scan and robocalls. Check with your phone carrier to determine what will work best with your phone. Technology keeps progressing; so we have to stay smarter than the scammers.

IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER REMINDER

By Joy Woodruff, Director of Development

The IRA Charitable Rollover, which allows taxpayers age 70½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 per year directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts to eligible charities, continues to be an attractive opportunity for many, as a permanent part of the U.S. tax code. Making such a gift allows you to benefit a charitable program that is meaningful to you and to reduce your taxable income. While gifts through this provision are not eligible for a charitable tax deduction, the reduction of taxable income is often more desirable. If you have not met your IRA’s required minimum distribution for 2017, please consider a gift to the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation. If you have questions regarding this opportunity, please contact Joy in the Development Office at (210) 568-3206.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION FUND By Maria Leas, RC Chair

It has been a long-standing tradition for Blue Skies residents to express an additional “Thank You” through the Employee Appreciation Fund. This fund is administered for us by our Finance Department, and you can participate by placing a check (please use checks instead of cash) into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are gifted on our behalf twice a year (June and December) to all hourly-paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Your check must be received at the Front Desk no later than Friday, Nov 24, by 5pm to be included in the upcoming distribution. Checks should be made payable to Blue Skies of Texas and marked for Employees’ Appreciation Fund. Thank you. SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to those individuals you see every day, such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk/Courtesy Officer and Maintenance teams, we’ve been asked: “Who are some of the behind-the-scenes folks our Appreciation Fund reaches?” Here is a sampling (not all inclusive): Dishwashers, finance clerks, overnight Front Desk and Courtesy Officer teams, overnight shift nursing and assisted living teams, cooks, etc.

Table Reservations - Just a reminder! All seating at BST is first-come, first-served. If you would like a specific table when you make reservations, we will do our best to accommodate your request based on availability.

Super Food - For the month of October the super food is Pumpkin. Pumpkins are rich in the antioxidant beta carotene and pumpkin seeds offer protein and key minerals. Pumpkins originated in Central America and have been a part of American cuisine for centuries. If harvested and handled properly, pumpkins, like other winter squash, can last long into the winter.

GAMES AND SCORES

12 Deadline: Friday, Oct 27@ Noon [email protected]

ACTION AT THE POOL HALL By Jim Edwards

Saturday, Sep 30, 2017 Ten players were on hand when the games began, Soon to be narrowed down to the winner and the also-ran. “Spooky” went out quickly followed by “Snooky” and “Rambo” “Old Vol” soon made his exit followed by “Snapshot,” who had to go. In third place was “The Mouth” who blasted away. Second place went to “Lucky” who “The Mouth” couldn’t slay. Like Phoenix from the ashes, “Mojac” rose to the top, He was the one in the final game “Lucky” could not stop.

Wednesday, Oct 4, 2017 Twelve players marched in with cues in hand, It would have been prettier if accompanied by a band. Alas, we have no baton twirlers nor fight songs to sing. We’re lucky to even get a few telephone rings. Nevertheless, “Beaver” was able to take third place, And “Frosty” in second was trying to make it a race. But “Spooky” was flying high and not to be outdone. He was undefeated today which means he WON!

Saturday, Oct 7, 2017 Only eight players made it today. Seems like too many other things got in the way. We had a new player join in the fun. “Talley Ho” took on “Snapshot” in the first game, and he won. As the games went on “Old Vol” took third place. Second place went to “Killer,” who was still in the chase. But “Talley Ho,” a ringer from BST West, was today’s best, We’re going to start requiring a visa when they come from West.

Wednesday, Oct 11, 2017 Twelve players showed up to test their skill, With only one shark candidate they had to kill. We had one visitor join us today. We were not very nice as he was soon put away. “Old Vol” took third place as the games went on. “Big Daddy” took second and “Old Vol” was gone. “Talley Ho” came in like it was a walk in the park And when it was over, he walked away as the shark.
